Using the Live Chat Feature

The Virtual Learning Environment supports many different ways of

communicating with your Tutor and each other.

Within each course, you will see an icon labelled „Click here to launch Live
Chat‟. Once selected, a new page will appear featuring the following options;

As you can see from the image above, you now have two choices

(Version without frames and JavaScript)

Unless you are using an old web browser or access the learning environment
though a corporate network which prohibits the use of JavaScript, it is advised
that you use the top option. If you are unsure of which you should use, try the
top option first and if you experience any problems, use the bottom one as an
alternative. If you find any further problems, please e-mail them to
[email protected] along with the specification of your machine and the web
browser you are using to access the site.
At the bottom of the window, a list of the current users in the Chat room is
displayed. If this is empty or you are the only user listed, you may have to wait
until other people have entered the room. If there is nobody online, you may
wish to use the relevant Forum to get an answer to your query.

Option 1

Once you have selected to enter a Chat session, a new window will open as
shown above. The Chat is split into three sections:

1. The left pane displays the conversation live, as it takes place

2. The right pane displays the names of the participants of the current
Chat
3. The white box at the bottom of the left pane is where you type to
participate in the Chat.

In the right column, beneath each users name is a button labelled „beep‟.
Clicking this sends an audible signal to the user, allowing you to get their
attention if they are using the Chat feature in a multitasking environment. A
good indicator that a user is away is the amount of time they have been idle in
the Chat.

To leave the Chat session and return to the main page, click the button to
close the window.
Option 2

Once you have selected to enter a Chat session, a new window will open. The
top part of the window will display the participants of the Chat session. The
bottom part will show the messages typed so far.

To update the Chat window, you can either press the button or
press the F5 key on your keyboard.

If the Chat lasts for a long time or there are multiple participants, clicking the
“Show only new” tick box will hide the old messages. To see the full Chat log
again un-tick the box.

To leave the Chat session and return to the main page, click the button to
close the window.
