Module No. 1
Title Theory,Concepts,Principles,Concepts of
metaparadigm in nursing

Overview Nursing Theory became a major theme in the last

half of the 20th century, and it continues to
stimulate phenomenal growth globally and
expansion of nursing literature and education
around the world.
Introduction Althought nurses of early eras often delivered
excellent care to patients, much of what was
known about nursing was not tested or used
uniformly in practice of [Link], a
major goal was put forth by nursing leaders in the
20th century for the development of nursing
knowledge on which to base nursing practice,
improve quality of care and gain recognition of
nursing as a profession.
Learning Outcomes 1. Explain the difference of theory, concept, and
principles.
2. Discuss the concepts of metaparadigm of
nursing.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, the learner should:
[Link] what is a concept, theory, and
principle.
[Link] the characteristics of a theory.
3. Identify the components of a theory.
4. Present the purposes of a nursing theory.
[Link] what a nursing paradigm is.
DISCUSSION:

According to Chin & Kramer, a theory is a rigorous restructuring of ideas that

project a tentative, purposeful and systematic view of a phenomena.
Therefore, a theory is composed of interralated concepts.

QUESTIONS:

With the ongoing pandemic, caused by COVID 19, collect pictures or

captions from magazines and paste them in a work sheet, arranging them in
a manner that will exhibit relatedness.

II. Answer the following questions:

1. What is a component that will contribute to generate a theory?

- The component that will contribute to generate a theory are
describes, explains, predicts and prescribes.

2. Mention one characteristic of a theory.

- One characteristic of a theory should be testable that can be supported

through a series of scientific research projects or experiments. Sometimes a
theory is proven to be wrong through evidence: this is called rejecting a
theory. However, a theory can never be proven to be absolutely true
because it is an interpretation. There is always the possibility that a different
interpretation will someday be found to be more correct. A theory must be
tested for you to know if it has a relevant information. It is the basis of
hypothesis to be tested.

[Link] is a set of related concepts based on studies and experiences which

contribute for the betterment of nursing care.

- Nursing Theory

[Link] are called the building blocks of theories.

- Abstract and Concrete

5. What is not a type of theory?

- Hypothesis

[Link] are conceptual frameworks represented?

- A conceptual framework represents the research’s synthesis of literature on

how to explain a phenomena. It can be used in different fields of work and is
most commonly used to visually explain the key concepts or variables and
the relationships between them that need to be studied.

7.A component of a metaparadigm in nursing

- Nursing, Health, Environment and Person

DISCUSSION:

A recovering patient who was about to be discharged in the medical

ward at CVMC, walked outside the room and observed the morning care
done by the nurses. He saw how the nurses took care of the patient with a
warm and professional touch. Together with the nursing students they move
about with an almost fluid motion and sense of purpose. Fast but not
awkward, with haste but never sacrificing the quality of service. Each patient
was approached in different ways, but with the same caring approach. The
patient could not help but asked one of the nursing student how they learned
this unique type of care, that student nurse answered, “we have theories
about that sir”.

QUESTION:

There are classification of theories, according to function (Dickoff &

James 1968). Using the above situation, cite an example/situation, wherein
the four classifications are being used. Use the table below.

Classification of nursing theory situation

Metatheory The patient saw how the nurse took
care of the patient with a warm and
professional touch.
Each patient was approached in
different ways, but with the same
caring approach.
Grand Theory The recovering patient who was
about to be discharged in the
medical ward at CVMC, walked
outside the room and observed the
morning care done by the nurses.
Middle Range Theory Each patient was approached in
different ways, but with the same
caring approach.
Practice Theory The nurse answered the patient’s
question on how they learned the
unique type of care and the nurse
answered that they have theories
about that.
