Blockchain for Supply Chain Transparency

A Comprehensive Research Paper

Author: Salam Kalam
Date: June 21, 2025
Abstract
This research paper explores the application of blockchain technology to enhance
transparency and traceability in supply chain management. It examines current
challenges, proposes a blockchain-based framework, and analyzes case studies
demonstrating improved accountability and efficiency.
1. Introduction
Global supply chains face issues of opacity, fraud, and inefficiency. Blockchain's
immutable ledger offers a solution by providing secure, transparent records of
transactions. This paper discusses the potential of blockchain to transform supply
chain operations.

2. Literature Review
- Smith et al. (2023): Blockchain in food traceability. - Lee & Wong (2024): Smart
contracts for logistics automation. - Gupta (2022): Challenges in blockchain
scalability.

3. Methodology
This study employs qualitative case study analysis of three companies that have
implemented blockchain in their supply chains. Data was collected through
interviews and analysis of transaction records.

4. Case Studies
4.1 Food Industry: Company A reduced recall time by 30%. 4.2 Pharmaceuticals:
Company B enhanced track-and-trace compliance. 4.3 Electronics: Company C
minimized counterfeit components.

5. Discussion
The case studies demonstrate significant improvements in transparency and trust.
However, challenges such as data privacy, integration with legacy systems, and
regulatory compliance remain.

6. Conclusion
Blockchain holds promise for supply chain transparency. Future research should
address scalability solutions and standardized protocols to ensure widespread
adoption.
