Class 10 Science - Chapter 6: Life Processes

Important Questions with Answers (20 Marks, 30 Minutes)

Section A: Very Short Answer Questions (1 mark × 4 = 4 marks)

1. What is the function of hydrochloric acid in the stomach?

Answer: Hydrochloric acid creates an acidic medium for pepsin to digest proteins.

2. Name the product and by-product of anaerobic respiration in human beings.

Answer: Lactic acid is the product; small amount of energy is the by-product.

3. Why is transportation necessary in plants and animals?

Answer: To distribute nutrients and oxygen, and remove waste materials.

4. Which blood vessel carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart?
Answer: Pulmonary vein.

Section B: Short Answer Questions (2 marks × 3 = 6 marks)

5. How are alveoli designed to maximize the exchange of gases?

Answer: Alveoli have a large surface area, thin walls, and are surrounded by capillaries for efficient
gas exchange.

6. Differentiate between autotrophic and heterotrophic modes of nutrition.

Answer: Autotrophs make their own food (e.g., plants); heterotrophs depend on others for food (e.g.,
animals).

7. What will happen if the valves in veins do not function properly?

Answer: Blood may flow backward, causing pooling and varicose veins.

Section C: Long Answer Questions (5 marks × 2 = 10 marks)

8. Describe the process of nutrition in Amoeba with the help of a labelled diagram.
OR
Explain the steps involved in the process of photosynthesis. Mention the raw materials required and
the end products formed.
Answer: Nutrition in Amoeba:
- Ingestion: Food is engulfed by pseudopodia forming food vacuole.
- Digestion: Enzymes break down the food.
- Absorption: Nutrients diffuse into cytoplasm.
- Assimilation: Nutrients used for growth and energy.
- Egestion: Undigested food is expelled out.

Photosynthesis:
- Takes place in chloroplasts using chlorophyll, sunlight, CO2, and water.
- Steps: Light absorption, water splitting, and carbon fixation.
- Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2

9. Describe the double circulation of blood in humans. Why is it necessary? Draw a simplified
diagram to support your answer.
Answer: Double circulation includes:
- Pulmonary circulation: Right side pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs.
- Systemic circulation: Left side pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
- Keeps oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood separate.
- Ensures efficient oxygen supply to tissues.
- Diagram should show heart with two atria, two ventricles and flow of blood.
