1.3 Product description

1.3.1 Introduction
The AvCount Lube and AvCount Lube Low-Visc are compact, bench-top automatic particle counters.
Both instruments are used to measure the size and distribution of particles in hydraulic oils, lubricants,
fuels and aggressive phosphate ester hydraulic fluids such as Skydrol and are fitted with FFKM seals.
The AvCount Lube consists of an automatic particle counter and a sample delivery system (SDS).
When used in conjunction with the sample delivery system, the AvCount Lube can analyse samples
with kinematic viscosities up to 200 mm2/s.
The AvCount Lube Low-Visc is identical to the AvCount Lube, but does not include a sample delivery
system. The AvCount Lube Low-Visc can analyse samples with kinematic viscosities up to 64 mm2/s.
Both particle counters are normally connected to a Windows© based computer and controlled and
operated using the ProTrend© software supplied with the instruments. They can also be used as
standalone instruments for tests using up to six size bands.
The test process is fully automated. Once you have loaded the sample container, selected a test
method and initiated the test, the test proceeds without any further operator intervention.

9
Revision: 3.0
3 December 2019
Publication: SA1900H0A

The sample is fed to the inlet of the AvCount Lube at 3 bar gauge via the sample delivery system, or
at atmospheric pressure for low viscosity samples. For the AvCount Lube Low-Visc, the sample is fed
to the inlet of the instrument at atmospheric pressure only. Both instruments can also be connected to
a pressurised source such as a pipeline or storage tank operating at up to 10 bar gauge.
Once the sample enters the particle counter, it flows through the optical measurement cell where its
particle content is measured. A positive displacement pump discharges the sample into a waste
container.
Test results are analysed and reported using the ProTrend software, in accordance with a number of
test methods and cleanliness codes. For NAS 1638 tests, the sizes are converted automatically using
industry accepted conversion tables.
The AvCount Lube and AvCount Lube Low-Visc are calibrated in accordance with ISO 11171 and
report particle sizes in µm(c).

1.3.3 Particle counter

For the AvCount Lube, the sample is delivered to the particle counter via the sample delivery system,
which is described in section 1.3.4. Alternatively, lower viscosity samples with kinematic viscosities
< 64 mm2/s, can be delivered at atmospheric pressure via sample tube assembly SA1000-001, which
is available as an accessory and is listed in section 10.2.
For the AvCount Lube Low-Visc, the sample enters the particle counter at atmospheric pressure via
sample tube assembly SA1000-001, which is supplied with the instrument.
The particle counter consists of an optical measurement cell, a positive displacement pump and a
changeover valve. The measurement cell uses the laser obscuration principle to measure the size and
distribution of particles in a sample. Light from a laser shines through the measurement cell and a
sensor on the other side of the cell detects the light passing through the cell. Particles present in the

14
Revision: 3.0
3 December 2019
Publication: SA1900H0A

sample cast shadows on the sensor, causing a drop in the voltage output from the sensor. The
voltage drop is proportional to the particle size. By recording the voltage drops, the instrument counts,
sizes and records each particle passing through the sensor.
ProTrend is normally used to control the particle counter and analyse the data that the instrument
generates. Refer to section 1.3.5 for further information on ProTrend.
You can also operate the instrument in standalone mode with reduced functionality. In standalone
mode, the instrument can only carry out tests using the test methods saved on the instrument. The
standalone instrument reports results as a cumulative particle count in particles/ml and to ISO 4406
cleanliness codes.
You can configure the particle counter so that the pump is either before or after the sensor by
changing the position of the pump configuration tube on the front of the instrument. For maximum
accuracy, we recommend that you configure the instrument so that the pump is after the sensor. This
removes the risk of sample contamination from the pump. However, if the particle counter is unable to
draw in a high-viscosity sample, you could reconfigure the instrument so that the pump is before the
sensor, if the test method allows. Using the instrument in this alternative configuration will reduce the
accuracy of the results.
1.3.4 Sample delivery system
The AvCount Lube includes a sample delivery system that feeds viscous samples into the particle
counter. You must use the SDS for samples with kinematic viscosities > 64 mm2/s. When used in
conjunction with the SDS, the AvCount Lube can handle samples with viscosities up to 200 mm2/s.
The sample delivery system consists of a compressor and a sample pressurisation chamber. A
sample container is placed on the sample platform and the platform is raised into the pressurisation
chamber where it is pressurised to 3 bar gauge by the compressor. The sample passes to the particle
counter under pressure via the sample tube.
You can upgrade the AvCount Lube Low-Visc to an AvCount Lube by adding the SA1950-0 Sample
delivery system listed in section 10.1.
1.3.5 ProTrend© software
ProTrend is proprietary software that can be used with a number of different particle counters
including the AvCount Lube and AvCount Lube Low-Visc. ProTrend must be installed on a Windows©
based computer and is used to control the instrument and analyse the data that it generates.
Using ProTrend, you can generate cumulative and distributive particle counts for up to 16 size bands,
analyse and view results, and generate and edit different test methods, cleanliness codes and units.
ProTrend was created in conjunction with our technical partner, Markus Klotz GmbH.
1.3.6 Safety devices
The particle counter has the following safety features:
• A pump motor cut-out that trips the pump if it jams or the current to the pump exceeds the
allowable limit.
• A current limiting device to control the laser power.
The AvCount Lube sample delivery system has the following safety features:
• A pressure switch to switch off the SDS compressor when the pressurisation chamber
reaches 3 bar gauge.
• A pressure relief valve to protect the SDS compressor from over-pressure.
• A mechanical interlock that prevents you from opening the pressurisation chamber when it is
pressurised.
• A compressor stop button to switch off the compressor at any time.

2.5.4 Connecting the pump configuration tube

You can configure the particle counter so that the pump is either before or after the sensor by
changing the position of the pump configuration tube on the front of the instrument. For maximum
accuracy, we recommend that you configure the instrument so that the pump is after the sensor. This
removes the risk of sample contamination from the pump. The instructions below are based on the
recommended instrument configuration, with the pump after the sensor.
If the particle counter is unable to draw in a high-viscosity sample, you could reconfigure the
instrument so that the pump is before the sensor, if the test method allows. Using the instrument in
this alternative configuration will reduce the accuracy of the results. Follow the instructions in section
7.5.2 if you wish to use the alternative configuration.

5 Calibration and verification

5.1 Verification
Verify the performance of the AvCount Lube according to the following schedule.
Table 1: Verification schedule

Verification Frequency

Pump flow rate Every 6 months

Particle count Every 6 months

You should also verify the instrument flow rate and particle count if:
• The instrument is producing unusual results
• You have removed the sensor for cleaning
• You have calibrated the instrument
• You have replaced the pump

Do not attempt to remove the pump or sensor unless you have been trained to do
so by Seta Analytics. You may damage the components and invalidate your
warranty if you do so. Return the instrument to Seta Analytics for repair if you
have not had the necessary training.

5.1.1 Verifying the pump flowrate

Verify the pump flowrate by measuring the volume of liquid discharged with each stroke of the pump
and the pump stroke time, for an IP565 test using filtered heptane. During a test in accordance with
IP 565, the pump strokes 8 times.
If the pump flowrate is within the limits given in Table 2 on page 61 and Figure 8 on page 62, verify the
particle count by following the instructions in section 5.1.2.
If the pump flowrate is outside the required limits, check the instrument for leaks or blockages. Repair
any leaks, clean the instrument and repeat the test. If the pump flowrate is still outside the required
limits, contact Seta Analytics for advice.
To verify the pump flowrate:

NOTE – You need the following equipment to verify the pump flowrate:
• Graduated measuring cylinder with 1 ml graduations and a minimum volume of
100 ml.
• Stop watch
• 300 ml filtered heptane

2. Do one of the following:

• If IP 565 is one of the saved test methods on your instrument, go to step 3.
• If IP 565 is not one of the saved test methods on your instrument, proceed as
follows:

2.1 Follow the instructions in the ProTrend instruction manual to save the IP 565
test method to your instrument.

2.2 Go to step 3.

3. Observe the guidelines for avoiding contamination given in section 4.1.

4. Prepare the instrument by following the instructions in section 4.2.

5. Pour filtered heptane into the sample container.

6. Run a test with heptane in accordance with IP565 by following steps 1 to 8 in

section 4.4.2.

NOTE – Before the pump starts for each pump stroke, you will hear a low-pitch sound
for a short time as the changeover valve moves into position. The higher pitch sound
that follows is the pump motor.

7. Allow heptane to discharge into the waste container for the first three pump strokes.

8. At the end of the third pump stroke,

insert the waste tube into a graduated
measuring cylinder.

58
Revision: 3.0

9. Start the stopwatch when you hear the pump start for the fourth pump stroke.

NOTE – Before the pump starts for each pump stroke, you will hear a low-pitch sound
for a short time as the changeover valve moves into position. The higher pitch sound
that follows is the pump motor. Start the stopwatch when you hear the pump motor.

You must operate the stopwatch in time with the sound of the pump motor, not
by observing the flow of heptane into the measuring cylinder. The volume of
liquid in the waste pipe makes the latter method inaccurate.

10. Pause the stopwatch when you hear the pump stop.

11. Restart the stopwatch when you hear the pump restart.

12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 to time the remaining pump strokes.

13. Check that the volume of heptane discharged into the measuring cylinder is
50 ml ± 5 ml.

14. Calculate the average volume discharged per pump stroke by dividing the volume in
the measuring cylinder by five.

15. Calculate the average pump stroke time by dividing the total time on the stopwatch by
five.

16. Do one of the following:

• If, for the average volume discharged, the average pump stroke time is within the
region bounded by the red line in Figure 8 on page 62, or is within the limits given
in Table 2 on page 61, the pump flowrate is verified. Go to step 18.
• If, for the average volume discharged, the average pump stroke time is outside
the region bounded by the red line in Figure 8 on page 62, or is outside the limits
given in Table 2 on page 61, the pump flowrate is outside the required
specification. Go to step 17.

17. Check the instrument for leaks and blockages by proceeding as follows:

17.1 Run an IP 565 test using heptane by following the instructions in section 4.4.2.

59
Revision: 3.0
3 December 2019
Publication: SA1900H0A

NOTE – Excessive air bubbles in the waste line may indicate a leak at the inlet
to the instrument.

17.2 If there are excessive bubbles in the waste line, check the following for leaks:
• Sample tube
• Sample inlet connection
• Sample outlet on the top of the sample delivery unit – AvCount Lube
only
• Connection between the sample tube and the metal dip tube – AvCount
Lube Low-Visc only.
Also, check that there is adequate heptane in the sample container.

17.3 While a test is running, place your finger over the end of the waste tube for a
short time to seal it. Remove your finger to release the pressure. The variation
in pressure may dislodge debris that has accumulated in the measurement cell
or waste pipe.

17.4 When the test is complete, check the particle count for the 4-µm size band and
do one of the following:
• If the particle count ≤ 70, go to step 17.7.
• If the particle count > 70, go to step 17.5.

17.5 Check the metal dip tube and sample tube for blockages. Disconnect the
sample tube from the instrument and clean if necessary.

17.6 If you have been trained to do so, clean the measurement cell by following the
instructions in the service manual.

17.7 Repeat the flow verification test by repeating steps 3 to 15.

17.8 Do one of the following:

• If, for the average volume discharged, the average pump stroke time is
within the region bounded by the red line in Figure 8 on page 62, or is
within the limits given in Table 2 on page 61, the pump flowrate is
verified. Go to step 18.
• If, for the average volume discharged, the average pump stroke time is
outside the region bounded by the red line in Figure 8 on page 62, or is
outside the limits given in Table 2 on page 61, the pump flowrate is
outside the required specification. Contact Seta Analytics for advice.

5.1.2 Verifying the particle count

When you have verified the pump flowrate, you must verify the particle count for an IP 565 test with
AvCount verification material SA1006-0, which is listed in section 10.1.1.
As with all tests, it is essential that you follow the guidelines in section 4.1 for avoiding contamination.
The particle count verification will fail if you do not take steps to ensure the cleanliness of the
instrument and avoid contamination.
Before testing the verification material, you must run an IP 565 test using filtered heptane. If the
resulting particle count for the 4-µm size band is ≤ 70, the instrument is sufficiently clean and you can
test the verification material.
If the resulting particle count for the 4-µm size band is > 70, repeat the IP 565 test with heptane and
recheck the particle count for the 4-µm size band. If the particle count for the 4-µm size band is < 70,
the instrument is sufficiently clean and you can test the verification material. If however, the particle
count is still > 70, repeat the IP 565 test with a fresh bottle of filtered heptane. If this test also yields a
particle count for the 4-µm size band in excess of 70, contact Seta Analytics for advice.
Sample preparation is critical to the success of a verification test. If you do not prepare the verification
material correctly, the particle count verification will fail. After preparing the verification material, test it
by running another IP 565 test. If the test results are within the limits given on the verification material
certificate, the instrument has passed the particle count verification. If the instrument fails the particle
count verification, it may require further cleaning and re-calibration. Contact Seta Analytics for advice.
After testing the verification material, you must clean the instrument by running further IP 565 tests
with filtered heptane until the particle count for the 4-µm size band is ≤ 70.

7.5 Other maintenance tasks

7.5.1 Cleaning the outside of instrument
Clean the instrument by wiping it with a soft cloth.
7.5.2 Reconfiguring the instrument for higher viscosity samples
You can configure the particle counter so that the pump is either before or after the sensor by
changing the position of the pump configuration tube on the front of the instrument. For maximum
accuracy, we recommend that you configure the instrument so that the pump is after the sensor, as
described in sections 2.5.3 to 2.5.6. This removes the risk of sample contamination from the pump.
If the particle counter is unable to draw in a high-viscosity sample, you could reconfigure the
instrument so that the pump is before the sensor, if the test method allows. Using the instrument in
this alternative configuration will reduce the accuracy of the results.
To reconfigure the instrument for higher viscosity samples:

Wear safety glasses, gloves and protective clothing when reconfiguring this
instrument. It contains sample liquid, which may be released when making
connections.

We recommend that you configure the instrument so that the pump is after of the
sensor. The accuracy of the instrument will be reduced if you configure the
instrument with the pump before of the sensor.

1. Identify the pump configuration tube.
