Item one
Senior two students of a certain school went for a science exhibition. A number of
experiments and demonstrations they witnessed amazed them. They saw a stick
appearing bent in a transparent beaker containing water, on removing it from
water, the stick was straight. They further moved into a special compartment with
unique amazing apparatus where the speed of light was measured was 3.0x108ms-1
in vacuum and 2.0x108ms-1 in a glass block. On asking the cause of the difference
in speed, they were told that it is due to the difference in refractive index of
different materials which they never understood. In that very room, a ray of light
from air was directed onto that same glass block at an angle of incidence of 60 0 to
the normal and since they were many in a room, they could not see the angle of
refraction in the glass block.
Task
a) Using knowledge of light and waves you have acquired, explain to senior
two students the cause of bending appearance of a stick in water.
b) Help senior one students to understand the meaning of refractive index and
determine the refractive index of tat glass block.
c) Advise senior two students to find the angle of refraction in the glass block
if the refractive index of air is 1.0
Item two
Of recent, a storied building being constructed in Kampala near Munyonyo
collapsed and took very many lives. However, when police arrested the contractor
and asked the cause of the collapse, he complained that the client did not give
enough money to buy the appropriate materials for constructing the building given
that the place is affected much by harsh weather conditions. However, when the
KCCA Engineer was tasked to analyze the situation, he said “the mechanical
properties of the materials being used are below the standard required for a storied
building near such areas. He said Young’s modulus of steel should be about
2.0 x10 Nm ”. This statement confused the public the more.

Support material
A force of 500 N causes an extension of 20 mm on an iron bar of length 100 cm
Whose cross-sectional area is 0.05 cm .2
Task
As a learner of Physics, you have been asked by police to produce a report about
the scene to help the police carry out investigation on the contractor. (15 scores)
Item 3
The figure below shows different gravitational strength of different bodies in
our solar system. Study and answer the questions that follow.
On which body will a human weight be least and heaviest and what conclusion can
you draw from the above picture on variation of gravitational strength on different
bodies on our solar system (10scores)
