Ratios and Proportions: Lesson 15

RATIOS:
● A ratio compares multiple numbers or quantities.
● It shows how much of one thing there is compared to another
● Can be written as:
○ 3:2
○ 3/2
○ 3 to 2

PROPORTIONS:
● A proportion is an equation that shows two ratios are equal.
● When solving a question with proportions, we need to set it up in the
following format:
𝑎 𝑐
𝑏
= 𝑑
● Remember: The numerators and denominators must have the same unit
respectively (Can’t have apples in the numerator of one fraction and in
the denominator of another!)

UNIT RATES:
● A unit rate compares two quantities when one of the quantities is 1
● Always put the weight, price, distance, or time in the numerator.
● The bottom number is the quantity that you want to find the unit rate for.
