ESPEctrum is an initiative of the Language Institute of the University of the Armed Forces (ESPE), whose

main objective is to strengthen the English language proficiency of our university community, our
students at all levels, and the rest of Radio ESPE's audience by providing practical and effective tools to
improve their language skills.

The program is divided into four segments:

The first two are useful for ALL LEVEL STUDENTS
• Master Your Language – to strengthen our students’ language skills.
• Learn English Through Songs – This segment helps our students learn pronunciation and new
vocabulary words through examples.
The last two are useful for INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED LEVEL STUDENTS
• Culture & Technology – where we explore different topics useful for international exams like PET and
FCE.

PART 1: MASTER YOUR LANGUAGE
There are words that have more than one meaning, some meanings are related, for example: Kiss =
beso/besar while others are completely different, for example: Fly

EXERCISE 1: Look at the following pictures and guess the different meanings of “FLY”: Translate the sentences

1 3

1. to fly in a plane

2. fly on the plate

3. it refers to the zipper

How do you say “BESAme/BESEnme “and “NO me BESES/No me BESEN” in English?

KISS ME/ KISS ME Don’t KISS ME/ Don’t KISS ME
Here, we are learning English through the use of IMPERATIVES. You just have to follow the structure and
add extra information, if necessary, to form a more complex sentence. Imperatives are use to give an
order to one or more people, the structure is the same but the meaning changes in Spanish, take that
into account.

Examples: IMPERATIVES
AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE
Verb + Complement Don’t + Verb + Complement
CALL me at seven Don’t CALL ME today
Llámame a las 7 No me llames hoy.
Llámenme a las 7 No me llamen hoy.

Words with two or more meanings

BOOK = Libro/Reservar Book ME a table = Reserveme/Reservenme una mesa
PLEASE = Por favor/Complacer Please, please ME = Por favor,

Separable verbs work in 3 different ways, for example, if you want to say: “Recoge a Maria en el
aeropuerto, we would have the following options:
1.- Pick up MARIA at the airport.
2.- Pick MARIA up at the airport.
But if I replace Maria for its object pronoun, the only option
is: 3.-Pick HER up at the airport.
Typical mistake: Pick up HER

differences have you encountered between the two countries that have had the greatest impact on
you personally and professionally?

The most representative difference is the climate and the culture of the
people.

UK? Were there any specific challenges you had to overcome when adapting to such a different
lifestyle?

FOR YOU

by practicing, so it would be easier to speak English.

British life have you come to value most deeply?

PART 2: CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY

Today we'll explore how social media is transforming our cultural identity and how it connects
us in a digital world. Social media has radically changed the way we connect, communicate, and,
above all, how we see ourselves and others. "Social media is the new mirror." And this mirror
sometimes reflects more than just our image. It also reflects who we are, what we value, and, in
many cases, who we want to be.

FOR YOU

“Is what we show online the real us?”

Social media not only allows us to connect with friends and family, but also with cultures around
the world. We have the power to share our traditions, language, and values like never before.
However, there is also pressure to present an idealized version of ourselves. “We see others, we
like it, we copy it.” But in doing so, are we losing ourselves?
FOR YOU

Are we creating a digital identity that doesn't reflect our true essence?

“Are we staying true to ourselves or just trying to fit in?”

It is true that networks can be a powerful tool for connectivity “Social media brings us together
like never before.” But we must also be careful. “Don’t get lost in the noise.” The noise of viral
content, trends, and the pressure to follow others. The key is finding balance and remembering
that, in the end, we are the ones who decide what to show. “How can we embrace the digital
world without losing ourselves?” “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Social media
shouldn't change who you are, it should amplify who you already are.

And this leads us to an important reflection: culture is something we should protect and
celebrate. Using social media to showcase our cultural identity, our customs, and our roots is one
way to preserve it. “Don’t just follow, lead.”

By sharing what makes us unique, we not only connect with the world, but we also inspire others
to do the same. Remember, no matter what you see on social media: “You don’t need to change
who you are to fit in.” If you stay true to yourself, your authenticity will be what attracts the right
people.

Let’s finish this by summing up the main points checked through this topic:

 “Is what we show online the real us?”

 “Keeping it real.”
 “Social media brings us together like never before.”
 “How can we embrace the digital world without losing ourselves?”
 “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
 “Don’t just follow, lead.”
 “You don’t need to change who you are to fit in.”

We know that “a barista” connects deeply with each cup of coffee. How do you feel when you're
preparing a drink for someone? Is it a special moment for you?
FOR YOU
Do you know how to prepare iced coffee?

Finally, Christian, have you ever participated in a barista competition, or would you like to
challenge yourself and participate in one?
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and passion for coffee with us. You've
inspired us to see barismo in a new light! And to you, dear listeners, don't forget that every cup
of coffee can be a masterpiece.

THIS WEEK’S INSPIRING PHRASES, SAYINGS AND IDIOMS

PART 2: MASTER YOUR LANGUAGE
ORACION AFIRMATIVA, auxiliar negativo + sujeto?
ORACION NEGATIVA, auxiliar afirmativo + sujeto?

AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES NEGATIVE SENTENCES

-She’s pretty nosy, ISN’T she? My room’s not a mess, IS it?
Ella es muy metida, NO? Mi cuarto no esta desordenado, NO?
-We’re pretty late, AREN’T we? You’re not pregnant, ARE you?
Estamos my atrasados, CIERTO? Tu no estas embarazada, CIERTO?
-Your brother is in school today, ISN’T he? My friends aren’t in the park, ARE they?
-It’s a beautiful day, ISN’T it? It isn’t raining, is it?
Es un bonito dia, NO ES CIERTO? No esta lloviendo, NO ES CIERTO?
-Her father’s going to call soon, ISN’T he? Our exams aren’t lost, ARE they?
Su padre va a llamar pronto, NO ES VERDAD? Nuestros exámenes no están perdidos, NO ES VERDAD?

Ellos son alérgicos a los tallarines, NO? -Bonita mañana, CIERTO? -No podrías haber escogido una mejor.
Fredi, Fredi Simmonds.
No, no eres tú.

-I’m pretty stubborn, AREN’T I?
Soy bastante terco, NO?

correcta seria:

-You speak English, DON’T you?

Tu hablas ingles, NO?
-She lives here, DOESN’T she?
Ella vive aquí, VERDAD?
-She’d like to see me, WOULDN’T she?

-I DIDN’T call you yesterday, DID I?

Yo no te llame ayer, CIERTO?
-You CAN’T help me, CAN you?
Ud no puede ayudarme, VERDAD?
-She SHOULDN’T have said that, SHOULD she?
Ella no deberia haber dicho eso, NO ES VERDAD?
LAST BUT NOT LEAST ABOUT TAG QUESTIONS

2.- THIS/THAT se transforman en IT/ THESE/THOSE se transforma en THEY

NEVER/HARDLY EVER etc., tendrán una TAG QUESTION afirmativa.
5.- Los imperativos utilizan otras estructuras:

Will you? won’t you? Would you? Can you? y Could you? son usados en preguntas despues de los imperativos.

-Do sit down, won’t you? = Sientate/Sientense, por favor.

-Open the window, would you? = Abre la ventana, por favor
-Give me a hand, would you? = Dame una mano, por favor
-Shut up, can’t you? = Callate, por favor

After a negative imperative, only will you? can be used.

Después de un imperativo negativo, solo Will you? puede ser usado.
-Don’t forget to call her, will you? = No te olvides de llamarla, por favor?

5.

I’m sure you know, don’t you?

FOR YOU…..
Tick or a cross next to them = Ponga un visto o una X junto a ellas
