Essential Formula Sheet for Engineering Mathematics

Unit I: Integral Calculus

- Integral of x^n dx = (x^(n+1))/(n+1) + C (n -1)

- Integral of 1/x dx = ln|x| + C

- Integral of e^x dx = e^x + C

- Volume of Solid (Revolution about x-axis): V = pi * integral from a to b of [f(x)]^2 dx

- Arc Length: L = integral from a to b of sqrt(1 + (dy/dx)^2) dx

- Surface Area: S = 2pi * integral from a to b of y * sqrt(1 + (dy/dx)^2) dx

- Differentiation under integral sign: d/dx of integral from a(x) to b(x) of f(t,x) dt

Unit II: Multiple Integrals

- Double Integral: integral over region R of f(x, y) dx dy

- Triple Integral: integral over volume V of f(x, y, z) dx dy dz

- Change of Order: Rewrite limits to simplify integration

- Change of Variables: Use Jacobian determinant

- Applications: Area = double integral over R of 1 dA, Volume = double integral over R of f(x, y) dA

Unit III: Vector Integration

- Line Integral: integral over C of F . dr = integral over C of (P dx + Q dy + R dz)

- Surface Integral: double integral over S of F . n dS

- Volume Integral: triple integral over V of f(x, y, z) dV

- Gauss's Theorem: surface integral of F . n dS = volume integral of div F dV

- Green's Theorem: line integral = double integral over R of (dQ/dx - dP/dy)

- Stokes' Theorem: line integral = surface integral of (curl F) . n dS

Unit IV: Differential Equations

- Linear 1st Order: dy/dx + P(x)y = Q(x); Solution: y * IF = integral(Q * IF dx)

- Exact Equation: Mdx + Ndy = 0, if dM/dy = dN/dx

- Reducible to linear using substitutions

- Second Order Linear: a y'' + b y' + c y = 0

- CF (Complementary Function): from auxiliary equation

Essential Formula Sheet for Engineering Mathematics

- PI (Particular Integral): based on form of RHS

Unit V: Advanced Differential Equations

- Variation of Parameters: y = CF + y1 * integral(W2/W dx) + y2 * integral(W1/W dx)

- Cauchys Equation: x^2 y'' + a x y' + b y = 0 (use x = e^t)

- Legendre's Equation: (1 - x^2) y'' - 2x y' + n(n+1)y = 0

- Applications: Circuits, mechanical vibrations, population models
