Japanese Lesson Script: Topic 14 - Favorite TV Show (Session 1)

Teacher: Minasan, konnichiwa! (Hello everyone!) Kyou wa “terebi” ni tsuite ohanashi


shimashou. (Today, we will talk about "television.") Saisho ni, kono furasshu kaado o
mite kudasai. (First, please look at this flashcard.) Kochira wa “terebi” desu. (This is
"television.") Yonde mimashou. (Let's read it together.)

(Holds up flashcard)

Students: Terebi! (Television!)

Teacher: Sou desu! (That's right!) “Terebi” to wa, eigo no “television” o karita kotoba
desu. (The word "terebi" is borrowed from the English word "television.") Imi wa nan
desu ka? (What does it mean?)

Students: Terebi desu! (It means television!)

Teacher: Seikai desu! (Correct!) Tsugi ni, kochira no shashin o mite kudasai. (Next,
please look at this picture.) Kore wa Aika-san ga terebi o mite iru tokoro desu. (This is
a picture of Aika watching TV.) “Terebi o miru” to iu hyougen o tsukaimasu. (We use
the expression “to watch TV.”) Minna de itte mimashou! (Let's say it together!)

Students: Terebi o miru! (Watch TV!)

Teacher: Yoku iemashita! (Well done!) Ima, watashitachi no mokuhyou o ohanashi


shimasu. (Now, let’s talk about our objectives.) Kono topikku de wa, otagai no sukina
terebi bangumi to terebi o miru shukan ni tsuite hanashimasu. (In this topic, we will
discuss our favorite TV programs and our watching habits.) Minasan wa, kaigai no
koukousei ni intaanetto o tsuujite, sukina anime ni tsuite no ankeeto o sakusei
shimasu. (You will create a survey about your favorite anime to share with students
from other countries.) Tokuni kono sesshon de wa, kurasumeito no sukina terebi
bangumi o shiru koto ga dekimasu. (In this session, we will learn about classmates'
favorite TV shows.)

(Points to the calendar)

Teacher: Dewa, karendaa o mite, youbi o fukushuu shimashou. (Now, let's review the
days of the week using the calendar.) Youbi o itte mite kudasai. (Please say the days
of the week.)

Students: (Respond with days of the week)

Teacher: Ii desu ne! (Good job!) Sore o tsukatte, tsugi no hyougen o shoukai
shimasu. (Using that, I will introduce the next expression.) “Watashi wa ishuukan ni 5
nichi terebi o mimasu. Yoku terebi o mimasu.” (I watch TV 5 times a week. I often
watch TV.) Minna de itte mimashou! (Let’s say it together!)

Students: Yoku terebi o mimasu! (I often watch TV!)


Teacher: Subarashii! (Wonderful!) Tsugi ni, minasan no terebi o miru hindo o
shiraberu tame ni, kono gurafu o shirabemasu. (Next, we will look at this graph to
check how often you watch TV.)

Teacher: Kore kara, watashi ga shitsumon suru node, te o agete kotaete kudasai.
(Now, I will ask questions, so please raise your hand to answer.) “Yoku terebi o
mimasu ka?” (Do you often watch TV?) no to’i ni taishite, hai ka iie de kotaete
kudasai. (Please respond with "yes" or "no.")

Students: (Respond according to the graph)

Teacher: Arigatou gozaimasu. (Thank you!) Ima, minasan no terebi o miru shukan ni
tsuite hanashimashou. (Now, let's talk about your TV-watching habits.) Tatoeba, yoku
terebi o miru hito wa naze mainichi miru no ka oshiete kudasai. (For example, tell me
why you watch TV every day.)

(Asks discussion questions)

Teacher: Dewa, tsugi wa sukina terebi bangumi ni tsuite kiku koto ni shimasu. (Next,
we will ask about your favorite TV shows.) “Donna bangumi ga suki desu ka?” (What
shows do you like?) minna de itte mimashou. (Let’s say it together!)

Students: Anime/Kankoku dorama/“Forevermore”/“Bubble Gang”

Teacher: Soredewa, kodomo ni kiku koto ni shimasu. (Now, I will ask you.) ~san,
donna bangumi ga suki desu ka? (What show do you like, [Student's Name]?)

Student 1: Anime ga suki. (I like anime.)

Teacher: ~san, donna bangumi ga suki desu ka? (What show do you like, [Student's
Name]?)

Student 2: “Forevermore” ga suki. (I like "Forevermore.")

Teacher: Subarashii! (Wonderful!) Minna ga suki na bangumi o oboete oite kudasai


ne. (Please remember the shows you like.) Tsugi ni, kiita nihongo no shitsumon o
kakunin shimashou. (Now, let’s check the Japanese question I asked.) “Donna
bangumi ga suki desu ka?” no imi wa nan desu ka? (What does “What show do you
like?” mean?)

Students: (Give the meaning)

Teacher: Seikai desu! (Correct!) Dewa, shitsumon to kotae o kokuban ni kakimasu.


(Now, I will write the question and answer on the board.) “Donna bangumi ga suki
desu ka?” to “‘Forevermore’ ga suki.” (What show do you like? I like "Forevermore.")

(Writes on the board)

Teacher: Ii desu ne! (Good!) Tsugi ni, sukina riyuu o kangaemashou. (Next, let's think
of reasons for your favorites.) “~san wa ‘Forevermore’ ga suki. Doushite?” (Why do
you like "Forevermore?") to kiku koto ga dekimasu. (You can ask this question.)
Teacher: Tatoeba, “omoshiroi kara” to iukoto ga dekimasu. (For example, you can
say, “Because it’s interesting.”) Minna de itte mimashou. (Let’s say it together.)

Students: Omoshiroi kara. (Because it’s interesting.)

Teacher: Sarani, haiyuu ya joyuu no shashin o misenagara, hoka no riyuu mo shoukai


shimashou. (Furthermore, I will show pictures of actors and introduce other reasons.)
“Haiyuu ga suki da kara” to iimasu. (You can say, “Because I like the actor.”)

Teacher: Dewa, minasan no sukina terebi bangumi ni tsuite no riyuu o hanashite


mimashou. (Now, let’s talk about the reasons for your favorite TV shows.) “Donna
bangumi ga suki desu ka?” to kiite, riyuu o itte mite kudasai. (Ask, “What show do you
like?” and share your reasons.)

Teacher: Soshite, moshi “tsumaranai kara” to iitakara wa, “tsumaranai kara” to


iimasu. (If you want to say "boring," you can say, "Because it’s boring.")

Students: (Respond)

Teacher: Saigo ni, atarashii hyougen o fukushuu shimashou. (Finally, let’s review the
new expressions.) “Doushite?” (Why?) to “Omoshiroi kara” (Because it’s interesting)
no tsukai kata o kakunin shimasu. (Let’s check how to use them.)

(Revises the new expressions)

Teacher: Minna ga ieru you ni naru made kurikaeshimashou. (Let’s repeat until
everyone can say it.) Kyou wa subarashii jugyou deshita! (Today’s lesson was
wonderful!) Jikai mo kono choushi de ganbarimashou! (Let’s do our best in the next
lesson too!)

This Romanized script now includes English explanations, making it easier for non-
