Board approves budget;
talks charter school
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Cherry Hill Sun
The state Department of Edu-
cation originally requested the
Cherry Hill School District fi-
nancially support 169 students
at the proposed Regis Academy
Charter School, slated to open
this fall in Cherry Hill, and
draw students from the town-
ship, as well as from nearby
Voorhees, Somerdale and Lawn-
side.
The district would have had
to set aside about $1.9 million
for some students to attend the
charter school.
Since that time, the DOE has
provided additional figures for
the school district, said the
Susan Bastnagel, the districts
public information officer.
The DOE said the district
could set aside $2.1 million to ac-
commodate 186 students from
Cherry Hill, or $608,825 to send
about 50 students to the school.
The board had previously
moved forward in budget talks
without knowing an exact num-
ber to set aside for the charter
school.
At a Feb. 28 meeting, the
board adopted the preliminary
2012-2013 budget totaling
$171,498,435.
The budgets tax levy of
$149,694,439 represents a 2 per-
cent increase over the current
levy.
After discussion at another
recent meeting, the board unan-
imously approved the budget,
which reflects a $250,000 reduc-
tion in the local tax levy.

Cherry Hill Township recently
unveiled a new municipal web-
site, complete with new features,
more information and a more aes-
thetically pleasing welcome page.
You can still access the site at
the same place www.cherryhill-
nj.com.
You can even use your iPhone
to interact with the township.
As one of the new features, res-
idents can use the Report a Con-
cern feature, which can be found
on the left hand side of the wel-
come page. Here, residents can
sign up to report any non-emer-
gency in the township, including
potholes, clogged sewers, a
downed tree or a car parked
where it shouldnt be.
The information will be sent
directly to the mayors office, and
disseminated to the appropriate
municipal department.
Want to take it one step fur-
ther?
You can download the free citi-
zens request tracker from Civic
Plus on your iPhone. Choose
Cherry Hill as the organization
and get clicking.
From your phone, you can snap
a picture of that treacherous pot-
hole or the kitten trapped in a
tree and send the request right
there from your phone.
The new feature is just one of
many that will improve dialogue
between residents and the town-
ship, said Mayor Chuck Cahn.
This new website will serve as
our online town hall, providing
access to my administration and
our township government at any
time, Cahn said. We designed
the site with a focus on providing
our residents, visitors and busi-
nesses the ability to easily and
quickly find the information and
answers they are looking for.
Residents may also pay any po-
lice tickets through the website,
under the I want to section.
Jason Springer, the townships
director of communications, said
the township hopes to include the
ability to pay water, sewer and tax
bills online in the near future,
though the town council would
first have to approve such a meas-
ure.
Under the Notify Me feature
on the front page, residents can
sign up to receive everything
from email alerts from the mayor,
to available jobs, to bid postings.
Residents may now download
and print business, cat/dog and
marriage/civil union license re-
quests. Residents now have to

Board to increase funding for
technology infrastructure
The levy reduction was one
measure the board took after
agreeing to set aside money for
just 50 students to attend the
Regis Academy Charter School.
The levy now reflects a 1.83 per-
cent increase over last years and
is $250,000 below the state man-
dated cap.
The board had previously dis-
cussed what it would do with the
extra funds should it decide to set
aside for fewer students at the
charter school.
The board agreed to increase
funding for the districts technol-
ogy infrastructure, improving ac-
cess to Internet and curriculum
resources. The board will also di-
rect additional funding for capital
projects and to providing sup-
ports to eliminate R-level classes
in science.

The first 90 days of my administration
have been extremely busy and fruitful. We
have launched many initiatives and begun
to streamline our operations to ensure our
government operates more effectively and
efficiently. We have seen an overwhelming
response to our citizens cabinet and are in
the process of finalizing the members. As I
travel around town, I speak regularly with
business leaders who express their desire
to have even greater participation and in-
teraction with the township, to make sure
their voices are heard and their sugges-
tions are incorporated as we move our
town forward.
Whether businesses are looking to relo-
cate, start anew or expand their opera-
tions, there are numerous reasons why
they couldnt pick a better place than Cher-
ry Hill. To promote this increased dialogue
and enhance the partnership with our
businesses, my administration is creating
the Cherry Hill Business Council.
The Cherry Hill Business Council will
be a volunteer committee comprised of
business leaders throughout the town. It
will be made up of CEOs, owners and lead-
ers from businesses of all sizes and will
serve as an incubator, providing a
forum for business leaders to share their
opinions, concerns and suggestions
about how the
township can pro-
vide them better
support and assis-
tance.
The council will
work collabora-
tively with the
mayor, depart-
ment heads and
members of the
administration to
develop solutions
and initiatives for
the township.
As a businessman myself, I have spoken
regularly about the need to deliver a
smarter, more efficient and streamlined
government for our residents and busi-
nesses.
My administration has already begun
making changes to improve the way we do
business, but we recognize that as we en-
hance, improve and streamline our govern-
ment operations, we must also do a better
job marketing the township to current and
prospective businesses, reminding them
that Cherry Hill offers a magnificent com-
bination of residents and resources, creat-
ing a thriving business climate while at the
same time providing a first-class residen-
tial community.
We also intend to put an added focus on
business retention and the business coun-
cil will serve as an integral piece to the
puzzle, working with existing town busi-
nesses to identify problem areas and assist
with any expansion plans.
Like our citizens cabinet, the business
council will hold meetings every other
month and be joined by members of my ad-
ministration as we participate in this open
exchange of ideas to benefit our communi-
ty. These meetings will help increase both
transparency and communication, allow-
ing for an extended dialogue regarding
many of the issues and opportunities fac-
ing our businesses.
If you are interested in being a member
of the business council, please submit your
resume or brief bio, along with a letter
identifying what role you believe you can
play, to [email protected].
Space on the council is limited and the
deadline for submitting your information
to be considered for it is April 30.
Once we have received the applications,
we will review the submissions and notify
everyone by May 20th.
I look forward to working closely with
our business leaders from around the
township on this exciting new endeavor.

MAYORS MESSAGE
in our opinion
T
he governor was in Atlantic
City last week celebrating the
nearly completed Revel a
huge casino hotel set to stage a grand
opening in late May.
During his visit, Gov. Christie tout-
ed the 5,000 new permanent jobs the
Revel will create; the $153 million in
payroll it will provide; and the $155
million in state and local taxes it will
generate each year.
And that, of course, is good news for
the beleaguered city and the state as a
whole.
But theres so much more work for
Atlantic City. Primarily: Will it be-
come a destination point for not only
gamblers, but others as well? If it does
not, this big bet will turn out to be a
loser.
Recent reports out of Las Vegas in-
dicate that visitors there are spending
more money on dining, entertain-
ment, food, etc., than on gambling.
That shouldnt surprise anyone. There
are far more gambling outlets avail-
able to people these days than in years
past.
Atlantic City faces a nearly impossi-
ble task of becoming simply a gam-
bling hub. Casinos in surrounding
states are eating up gambling dollars
that historically have gone to AC. Peo-
ple who just want to play a slot ma-
chine or blackjack can find places
much closer to home to do so.
Atlantic Citys challenge is to create
something other than a string of casi-
no hotels. It has to create an experi-
ence. It has to attract people who will
stay in the city for more than a day to
gamble. Relying on busloads of people
from out of state who cash their slot
voucher and then play for a few hours
before re-boarding the bus to go home
just isnt a long-term plan for success.
Atlantic City can reinvent itself.
After all, Time Square reinvented it-
self. The Revel could be a key step in
that renovation, so long as other key
elements safety, shopping, cleanli-
ness, entertainment, etc. follow close
behind.
A bet on Atlantic City
A new casino hotel is great news, but far from a permanent solution
A step toward revitalization?
The Revel will bring jobs and tax dol-
lars. But it isnt enough, by itself, to
stop Atlantic Citys decline. Boosting
non-gambling attractions shopping,
entertainment, dining, etc. is critical
to the citys long-term success.

School celebrates 20 years
Earlier this month, Parisi
Speed School, in conjunction
with Cherry Hill Health & Rac-
quet Club (CHHRC), celebrated
the Parisi Speed Schools 20th an-
niversary as a pioneer in the
sports and speed training indus-
try for children.
Former and current families
toured the facility and spoke
with perspective students
about the competitive edge
Parisi gives them on and off the
field.
The event included Philadel-
phia Flyer Ian Laperriere and
Philadelphia Eagle Vince Papale.
In addition, guests were able to
jump in a moon bounce, catch a
magic show and test out their ath-
letic prowess.
CHHRC also invited current
and potential members to partici-
pate in the renowned Ultimate
Cat Club Challenge a motiva-
tional, testing and training pro-
gram that ranks and charts the
progress of athletes.
Children challenge themselves
to achieve the highest levels in a
variety of activities including
speed, jumping and agility skills
to determine how they measure
up against similarly aged com-
petitors.
The Cat Club Challenge also
helped children create bench-
marks to better their own scores.
All participants received Cat Club
certificates as well as prizes and
giveaways.
Staff from Cherry Hill Health
& Racquet Club/Parisi Speed
School was also available to an-
swer questions about Parisi
Speed School programs and re-
view options to help children be-
come more physically and men-
tally fit.
Special to The Sun
Philadelphia Flyer Ian Laperriere

Mayor Chuck Cahn, seen clapping, cheers on players at Cherry Hill Recreation basketball games on Feb.
11 at Carusi Middle School.
On Saturday, Feb. 11, Mayor
Chuck Cahn visited Cherry Hill
Recreation basketball games at
Carusi Middle School.
The mayor thanked Judith M
Krupnick, president of Cherry
Hill Volvo, for their generous
sponsorship of the entire basket-
ball league.
Cherry Hills recreation bas-
ketball league provides over 400
township children with the op-
portunity to participate in organ-
ized sports, said Cahn. In addi-
tion to encouraging more resi-
dents to join in our recreation ac-
tivities, I wanted to recognize
Cherry Hill Volvo for their part-
nership helping to make these
leagues the success they are. Rela-
tionships really do matter to
Cherry Hill Volvo.
For more information about
participating in Cherry Hills
recreation activities, contact head
of the department, Megan
Brown, at (856) 488-7868.

Students at Horace Mann Ele-
mentary School in Cherry Hill ex-
posed their experimental sides at
the schools second-annual sci-
ence fair on Monday, March 12.
More than 50 students from
kindergarten through fifth-grade
participated in this extra-curricu-
lar event, which was organized
and run by parent volunteers,
with the support of custodian
Clifton Johnson and principal
Shilpa Dalal.
Dalal said: This years science
fair brought out a wonderful
crowd of students, family mem-
bers, teachers, and administra-
tors. As I walked around, the stu-
dents did a beautiful job describ-
ing their projects, sharing why
they selected various topics, and
clearly explaining what they
learned. I was very impressed
with their work and they seemed
very proud of their own accom-
plishments. Well done, Horace
Mann students.
Heather Denver, the primary
organizer of the event, was excit-
ed about the growth of the fair
since last years inaugural event.
Each year, the creativity of
our school shows up in our sci-
ence fair. I was impressed by the
excitement the kids had in their
science projects. The kids are so
excited about their projects that
they don't even realize how much
they are learning and teaching
each other, Denver said.
This year, we had a few stu-
dents who hadnt submitted a reg-
istration form for the event just
show up with projects and ask if
they could be included, said
Ruth Cohen, the event's co-organ-
izer. Coupled with the fact that
some of our teachers came to the
event on their own time, I cant
think of a better, more pure re-
flection of the supportive and en-
couraging culture here at Horace
Mann. Its really been an incredi-
ble experience to set this up for
the students and then watch them
become so enthusiastically in-
volved.
While projects involving fire or
dangerous chemicals were not
permitted, there was no shortage
of exciting, mind-blowing science
on display. The students present-
ed experiments, displays and
demonstrations exploring topics
such as sound waves, dinosaurs,
feline behavioral patterns, densi-
ties of different liquids, torna-
does, the mechanics of catapults,
physiology and environment and
much more.
The students science fair proj-
ects are not part of their class-
room work, and participation is
completely voluntary. Even so, a
number of Horace Mann teachers
attended the event. One said she
is glad the school has events such
as this so students can explore
science in a way beyond what
there is time to explore in the
classroom.
While watching a demonstra-
tion on how you can use a potato
to complete an electric circuit,
one parent said: Its refreshing to
see that students, who probably
have lots of other interests and
activities outside of school, want-
ed to put time and effort into
something related to education
even when they werent required
to or werent getting any kind of
grade or points for it.
Horace Mann held Science
Spectacular, the schools annual
science day, on March 21.
This event is part of the school
day and is also organized and con-
ducted by parent volunteers.

Meanwhile, on Easter Sunday,
April 8, Kingsway Church will

service at 10 a.m. at the new audi-
torium at Cherry Hill High
School West, Chapel and Marl-
boro avenues, in Cherry Hill.
At 9 a.m., meet your neighbors
during a fellowship time while
enjoying complementary coffee
and pastries. Professional child-
care will be provided for children
up to 6 years of age.

Town meeting to be
held on plan for park
Freeholder Jeffrey L. Nash, li-
aison to the Camden County
Parks Department, will host a
town meeting on the new vision
plan for Cooper River Park on
April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cam-
den County Boathouse on North
Park Drive in Pennsauken.
The Camden County Parks De-
partment will present a plan that
will expand and refine the cur-
rent qualities and attributes of
Cooper River Park so it may con-
tinue to serve a large and diverse
population.
We are seeking input from the
public to help us create a better
version of one of Camden Coun-
tys great parks, Nash said. We
need to hear how people want to
use the park so that it will contin-
ue to be visited by generations of
Camden County residents.
The Cooper River Park Vision
Plan was developed to not only
protect the park by creating a new
riparian buffer, but to also uncov-
er the park by expanding its river
views.
The plan addresses the parks
surface cover, access, topography,
storm water management and
views.
Spanning more than 340 acres
across four municipalities, Coop-
er River Park is Camden Countys
gathering spot.
The park contains multiple pic-
nic areas, where friends and fami-
lies can gather; a 3.7-mile loop uti-
lized by walkers, runners and bik-
ers every day; and, it hosts the
largest childrens playground in
any county park.
The Cooper Rivers Olympic-
distance, 2,000-meter straight-
away is widely known as one of
rowing venues in the country,
home to numerous world-class re-
gattas and the Cooper River Boat-
house.

ing a concert of classical Sprig se-
lections at the Croft Farm Arts
Center, 100 Borton Mills Road in
Cherry Hill on Sunday, April 15 at
3 p.m.
DeTurck is a graduate of Cher-
ry Hill West High School, who

liard School and The Eastman
School of Music. He has per-

tional scale and has won compe-
titions throughout the world.
