Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
a. explain the basic concept of a system of
measurement
b. perform basic unit conversions, and
c. value the importance of system of
measurement in daily activities.
SYSTEM OF
MEASUREMENTS
It is defined as a system of related
measures that facilitates the
quantification of some particular
characteristics
ENGLISH SYSTEM
It originates by using
body parts as a guide
UNITS
for measurement Inch (in)
Feet (ft)
Yard (yd)
Mile (mi)
ENGLISH GRADUATION
METRIC SYSTEM
It is a decimalized
system with base
UNITS
units to prefixes Millimeter (mm)
Centimeter (cm)
Decimeter (dm)
Meter (m)
Kilometer (km)
METRIC GRADUATION
ENGLISH UNITS
EQUIVALENTS
12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
1 yard = 36 inches
1 mile = 5,280 feet
METRIC UNITS
EQUIVALENTS
10 mm = 1 cm
10 cm = 1 dm
10 dm = 1 m
1000 m = 1 km
ENGLISH UNITS TO
METRIC UNITS
EQUIVALENTS
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 foot = 30.48 cm
1 yard = 91.44 cm
BASIC UNIT CONVERSIONS
The most basic unit conversion from English to
Metric and vice versa is by using the Conversion
Factor which uses a fraction or factor written so
that the denominator and numerator are
equivalent values with different units as shown:

1 inch 2.54 cm
or
2.54 cm 1 inch
EXAMPLE
Convert 12 inches to centimeters
STEP 1
Write the conversion factor of the
given unit and the missing unit
1 inch 2.54 cm
or
2.54 cm 1 inch
STEP 2
Choose a conversion factor that will allow
you to cancel the unit of a given quantity, in
the given example, the given quantity is
inches
12 inches x 1 inch
2.54 cm
12 inches x 2.54 cm
1 inch
STEP 3
Operate to Units
12 inches x 2.54 cm = 30.48 cm
1 inch 1
30.48 cm successfully converted
12 inches = 30.48 cm
