VOICES

1. ACTIVE VOICE

A sentence is in active voice when the subject does the action of the
verb.

Structure:
Subject + Verb + Object
Example:
Shona cleans the house.
The teacher explains the lesson.
My mom cooks dinner.

2. PASSIVE VOICE

A sentence is in active voice when the subject does the action of the
verb.

Structure:
Object + To be+ Verb 3 + by + Subject
Example:

House is cleaned by Shona.


The lesson is explained by the Teacher.
Dinner is cooked by my mom.
EXAMPLES

SIMPLE PRESENT

Active: Subject + V1 + object


Passive: Object + is/am/are + V3 + (by + subject)
Example:
Active: She waters the plants.
Passive: The plants are watered by her.
Active: He writes a letter.
Passive: A letter is written by him.

SIMPLE PAST
Active: Subject + V2 + object
Passive: Object + was/were + V3 + (by + subject)
Example:
Active: They cleaned the room.
Passive: The room was cleaned by them.

PAST CONTINOUS

Active: Subject + was/were + V-ing + object


Passive: Object + was/were being + V3 + (by + subject)
Example:
Active: He was painting the wall.
Passive: The wall was being painted by him.
Active: They were watching a movie.
Passive: A movie was being watched by them.
EXAMPLES

PRESENT PERFECT

Active: Subject + has/have + V3 + object

Passive: Object + has/have been + V3 + (by + subject)

Example:

Active: She has finished the homework.

Passive: The homework has been finished by her.

Active: They have repaired the bike.

Passive: The bike has been repaired by them.

FUTURE

Active: S + Will + V1 + O

Passive: S + Will be + V3

Example:

Active: She will write a letter.

Passive: A letter will be written by her.
