1 It is given that 𝑓(𝑥) = ln(1 + sin 𝑥).
a) Expand 𝑓(𝑥) in ascending powers of x up to and including the term in x⁴. (4)
b) Hence find an approximation, to 3 decimal places, for (3)
𝜋
6

∫ 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑑𝑥
0
c) Use your calculator to find the true value of the integral and hence evaluate the
approximation. (2)

2 The areas enclosed by the curves C1 and C2 are shown below:

𝐶1 : 𝑟 = 2cos2 𝜃

𝐶2 : 𝑟 = sin 2𝜃

a) Show that: (3)

sin 2𝜃 ≡ 2 cos 𝜃 √(1 + cos 𝜃)(1 − cos 𝜃) , 𝜃∈ℝ

b) Find the area enclosed by the two curves. (7)

c) Express C1 in simplest Cartesian form. (2)
d) Find the Cartesian equations of the tangents to C1 parallel to the y-axis. (9)

3 (i) Prove by induction that, for all even natural numbers n: (6)
𝑑𝑛 𝑛
(sin 3𝑥) = (−1) 2 × 3𝑛 × sin 3𝑥
𝑑𝑥 𝑛

(ii) Prove by induction that, for all natural numbers n: (6)

𝑓(𝑛) = 4𝑛 + 6𝑛 − 1
is divisible by 9.
4 Two aeroplanes are modelled as travelling in straight lines. Aeroplane A travels from a
point P(120, -80, 13) to Q(200, 20, 5), in kilometres relative to a fixed position O.
Aeroplane B starts at a point R(-20, 35, 5) relative to O and travels in the direction
(10î – 2ĵ + 0.1k̂).

a) Find the acute angle between the two aeroplane’s flight paths. (2)
b) Show that the flight paths of the two aeroplanes will intersect, and determine
the position vector relative to O of this point of intersection. (7)

An air traffic controller states that this means that the planes must collide.

c) Explain why this conclusion is not necessarily correct. (2)

A triangle T has vertices at (k, 2), (6,2) and (6,7).

a) Given that T is transformed using matrix M, and the area of the resulting
triangle is 110, find the two possible values of k. (3)
b) Find the equations of any invariant lines under M. (4)
c) Write down the matrix M⁻¹. (1)

6 Series C and S are defined for 0 < 𝜃 < 𝜋 as:

𝑃 = 1 + cos 𝜃 + cos 2𝜃 + cos 3𝜃 + ⋯ + cos 12𝜃

𝑄 = sin 𝜃 + sin 2𝜃 + sin 3𝜃 + ⋯ + sin 12𝜃

a) Prove by induction that, for all natural numbers n: (6)

(cos 𝜃 + 𝑖 sin 𝜃)𝑛 = (cos 𝑛𝜃 + 𝑖 sin 𝑛𝜃)
13𝑖𝜃 −13𝑖𝜃
𝑒 6𝑖𝜃 (𝑒 2 −𝑒 2 )
b) Show that 𝑃 + 𝑖𝑄 = 𝑖𝜃 𝑖𝜃 (4)

𝑒 2 −𝑒 2
13𝜃 𝜃
c) Hence show that Q converges to 𝑄 = sin 6𝜃 sin csc 2 and find an
2
equivalent expression for the convergence of P. (4)
d) Hence find the values of 𝜃, {0 < 𝜃 < 𝜋} for which P+iQ is wholly real. (2)
7 The roots of the equation 2𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 2 + 11𝑥 − 9 = 0 are (𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾).
a) Write down the values of 𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾, 𝛼𝛽 + 𝛽𝛾 + 𝛼𝛾, and 𝛼𝛽𝛾. (1)
b) Hence find the values of: (7)
1 1 1
i. +𝛽+𝛾
𝛼
ii. 𝛼 2 + 𝛽 2 + 𝛾 2
iii. (𝛼 − 1)(𝛽 − 1)(𝛾 − 1)
c) Without solving the equation, find an equation with integer coefficients that
has roots (2𝛼, 2𝛽, 2𝛾). (6)

8 Colonies of angler fish and angel fish live in an ocean cave sealed off from the rest of
the ocean by a thick wall of seaweed.

After t years the number of angler fish, x, and the number of angel fish, y, are
modelled by the differential equations:

𝑑𝑥
= 0.1𝑥 + 0.1𝑦
𝑑𝑡

𝑑𝑦
= −0.025𝑥 + 0.2𝑦
𝑑𝑡

𝑑2 𝑥 𝑑𝑥
a) Show that 𝑑𝑡 2 − 0.3 𝑑𝑡 + 0.0225𝑥 = 0. (3)
b) Find the general solutions for the number of angler and angel fish in the cave
at time t. (8)

At the start of 2010 there were 20 angler fish and 100 angel fish in the cave.

c) Use this information to find the number of angler fish predicted to be in the
cave in 2017. (4)
d) Comment on the suitability of the model. (1)
