Form 2 Math Study Guide

This guide covers essential math topics with key formulas, examples, and tips.

Indices (Exponents)
 • a^m × a^n = a^(m+n)
 • a^m / a^n = a^(m-n)
 • (a^m)^n = a^(mn)
 • a^0 = 1 (if a ≠ 0)
 • a^-n = 1 / a^n
 • Tip: Practice simplifying expressions like 2^3 × 2^4 or 5^6 / 5^2.

Standard Form / Scientific Notation

 • Written as a × 10^n, where 1 ≤ a < 10
 • Example: 4500 = 4.5 × 10^3
 • Tip: Know how to convert both ways.

Significant Figures
 • First non-zero digit starts the count.
 • 0.00456 has 3 sig figs: 4, 5, 6
 • Tip: Practice identifying how many sig figs a number has.

Number Bases
 • Understand base 2, 8, 10 etc.
 • Know how to convert, add, subtract, and multiply in any base.
 • Tip: Carry when base is exceeded (like in base 10).

Algebra
 • Simplify by combining like terms.
 • Multiply: (a + b)(c + d)
 • Solve one-step/two-step equations.
 • Transposition: Make a variable the subject.
 • Simplify algebraic fractions like 3x / 6x^2.

Inequalities
 • Symbols: <, ≤, >, ≥
 • Reverse sign if multiplying/dividing by negative.
 • Example: -2x > 6 ⇒ x < -3

Angles (Parallel Lines)

 • Corresponding angles: Equal
 • Alternate interior angles: Equal
 • Co-interior angles: Add to 180°
 • Tip: Mark diagrams to help.

Polygons
 • Interior angle = ((n-2) × 180°) / n
 • Sum = (n-2) × 180°
 • Exterior angle = 360° / n

Statistics and Probability

 • Mean = Average
 • Median = Middle value
 • Mode = Most frequent
 • Range = Highest - Lowest
 • Probability = Favorable / Total outcomes

Graphs – Data Presentation

 • Bar Graph: Categorical data
 • Line Graph: Trends over time
 • Pictograph: Uses symbols/images
 • Pie Chart: Angles show proportion (total 360°)

Ratio and Proportion

 • Simplify ratios
 • Divide quantities in given ratio
 • Use cross-multiplication in proportion problems

Consumer Arithmetic
 • Simple Interest: SI = (P × R × T) / 100
 • P = Principal, R = Rate, T = Time (years)
 • Tip: Convert months to years
