PROJECT STEPS
Systematic Tutoring for Effective Performance of Students in
Mathematics

The result of pre-test (SY 2023-2024) showed that 6484 or 49% of the
total enrolment were non-numerates. At the end of the year, 76 or 5% were
non-numerates. It showed that there is an increase of 44%.

This project is initiated by Mathematics teachers of JAPMES to adhere

to the division's target of zero non-numerates in every school and to
effectively address factors affecting the learners’ numeracy level, Project
STEPS is believed to be an answer to the problem. This project focuses on
the learners who don’t have mastery on the four fundamental operation.

For the implementation of the project, Grade 1 to 6 mathematics

teachers employed various strategies.

Practice, Practice, Practice – the pupils were given ample exercises /

activities to work on and develop their mastery during their math period.

Learning Buddy – every non numerate pupil was given a “learning buddy.”
They worked together for the improvement of his/her buddy during their
math period.

Game-based Learning – learning while enjoying was the main goal of this
strategy because, as they say, all work and no play make Juan a dull boy.
These activities were conducted during the math period.

Use of Online Educational Tools – Grade 1 to 6 pupils used digital

platforms and resources to learn math. These tools made learning more
interactive and enjoyable.

Verbalize Math Problems – careful analysis of the problems led to the

correct solution during their math period.

Hands-on Approach – the use of real objects was essential in teaching

during their math period.

Use of Models or Learning Aids – incorporating visual and tactile aids to

enhance understanding and retention of mathematical concepts during their
math period.

Meaningful Homework – rethinking the entire practice. What was learned

in school was given follow up at home.

Teachers continued to guide learners toward achieving the purpose.

Through their dedication and support, they ensured that students received
the necessary guidance and resources to reach their learning goals. By
consistently implementing effective strategies and fostering a positive
learning environment, teachers helped students develop their skills and
knowledge, ultimately leading them to succeed in their educational journey.

Using educational apps, websites, and interactive programs, students learned math in a fun and
modern way.

By engaging with physical items, such as counting blocks, geometric shapes, and measuring
tools, students were able to grasp abstract ideas more concretely.
