Chemistry Report 1

The project investigates methods to prevent rust using household items, focusing on iron nails submerged in different conditions. The experiment concludes that covering nails with oil in water is the most effective method to prevent rust, while painting the nails does not provide adequate protection. The initial hypothesis that paint would be the best rust preventer is proven incorrect.

Investigating Which Household Method
Best Prevents Rust
Aim:
To find the best way to prevent rust with only simple household items.

Background Research:
Rusting is a chemical reaction between iron and oxygen to form ferric oxide which is rust. It
forms in iron due to its slow reaction with oxygen in air. Its formulae are given below:

Word Equation:
Iron + Oxygen → Ferric oxide

Chemical Equation:
4 Fe + 3O2 → 2 Fe2O3

Salt water (NaCl & H2O) can be used as a catalyst for this reaction. Rusting can be prevented by
covering iron with something else and plain water can also fast the reaction.

Hypothesis:
Covering the iron with paint will be the most accessible and the best preventer of rusting.

Materials:
 4 iron nails
 4 cups
 Water
 Oil (any)
 Nail polish (used as paint)
 Salt
 Labels (any piece of paper)
 Tissues

Method:
1. Label your cups as 1,2,3 and 4..
2. Paint one iron nail using nail polish.
3. Pour water into all the cups (240 ml).
4. In cup 1 put a normal iron nail.
5. In cup 2 put a normal iron nail and cover the water with oil (any oil). Tip: When
6. In cup 3 put the painted nail. observing for
7. In cup 4 put some salt (36g) in the water and put a normal iron nail. nails do not
8. Observe every day for rusting for 5 or 7 days. touch the nails.

Observation:
Day Cup 1 Cup 2 Cup 3 Cup 4
1 No change No change No change Small brown spots

2 No change No change No change More rust spots

3 Brown spots forming No change No change Nail partly rusted,

Heavy rusting
4 More brown patches No change Small spots Very Heavy rusting

5 More rusting No change Small spots Heavy rusting

Analysis:
From the observation above shows that painting iron is not the best way if painted locally to
prevent rust but cup 2 completely prevents rust. As we are investigating which house old method and
not any method. Cup 2 seems best the best than cup 3

Conclusion:
The hypothesis is to be proven wrong and experiment has failed proving that covering the metal
piece with water and covering with oil, because that oil floats in water it prevents oxygen from dissolving
in it and prevents rust.
