You recently noticed a local restaurant that was offering a part-time job.
Write a letter to the restaurant’s manager. In your letter,
– explain that you would like to apply for the job
– give some details of any relevant experience that you have
– specify the days and times that would suit you
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to you to express my interest in your job advertisement for a chef
that I saw posted on the local village board. As I have currently moved to Brenton
as a qualified chef, I would therefore like to apply for this position.
I noticed from the job description that you require someone who can both cook in
a creative and healthy way, and who can communicate with and manage staff in
an effective manner. My previous job was as an assistant chef at Brew’s
restaurant in London, where I was responsible for preparing all the dishes on the
restaurant’s menu and coming up with inventive recipes to present to the head
chef. I am also personally very interested in healthy living and this is always
reflected in how I cook. I was also responsible at Brew’s for managing the cleaning
and serving staff at the restaurant, in which capacity I found I was able to build
good working relationships with all the staff in my responsibility.
I noticed that this is a part-time job. My preferred days for working would be
Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons and evenings. I would be available
until late at night on those days and I would also be able to work two Saturdays of
each month.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please let me know if you require any
further
information.
Yours sincerely,
Marisa Thompson

You have heard that there is a part-time job available in a nearby shop. Write a
letter to the shop’s manager, applying for the job.
In your letter,
– specify what job you are applying for
– write about your experience and skills and why you should get an interview
– ask about the hours required for the job and give your preferred hours
Dear Sir,
My name is Suzanne Dunning and I am writing to apply for the part-time position
in your clothing shop.
I feel I would be an ideal candidate for the position and have much to offer your
business. I have quite a lot of experience working in previous stores and so I am
familiar with tasks such as moving boxes, unpacking, stocking and register work. I
have a keen interest in and knowledge of fashion; I would be able to create stylish
clothing combinations for the mannequins, appealing to your desired
demographic that your shop targets. I have also experience at helping customers
find the right clothing that suits them. In addition to my experience and
knowledge, I am a friendly and hard-working employee who can deal with any
situation and I would bring energy and enthusiasm to your shop.
With regards to working hours, I am currently a student and I have classes in the
mornings. If I were to receive the position, I would therefore be available to work
any afternoons, evenings and weekends. Would this be acceptable?
I hope you have found my details interesting and that you will consider asking me
to an interview.
Yours faithfully,

You are applying for a job. As well as attaching a CV, you need to write a cover
letter explaining your reasons for choosing this particular job at this particular
company, and why you would be a good hire. Things to include are:
1. Possible qualifications or reasons for you to be hired
2. Your energy and enthusiasm for the job
3. Your past experience in a similar position.
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my interest in the position of Lead Software Engineer that
was advertised in The Times newspaper on 24/09/2017.
My education consists of a Bachelor’s Degree with first class honours in Computer
Science from the University of Manchester, as well as a Master’s Degree in
Applied Software Engineering from the University of Barcelona, where I assisted
in the development of an artificial intelligence that has the ability to recognise
individual personality traits in humans with great accuracy.
Further to this, I have since worked for Intel Corporation as a Senior Engineer for
over eight years. My main responsibilities centred around the management of a
team of fifteen developers whose job it was to provide machine code solutions to
processing problems. I believe it is this well-developed problem-solving ability
which makes me a suitable candidate for a leadership position at your esteemed
company.
Finally, I have been compelled to participate in the technology sector since I was a
teenager, and so my enthusiasm for the industry is considerable.
Please find my CV attached for your perusal, and I look forward to discussing this
opportunity further at interview.

The school library is seeking applicants for a job over summer break. Write a letter
to the library’s manager.
TEACHER MUZAFFAR 4
In your letter include:
- A brief introduction of yourself
- Your experience and relevant skills
- Why you want the job
Dear Sir or Madame,
My name is Jonathan Riley and I am a 3rd year student. I am studying Biology and
plan on going to graduate school after I graduate. I am writing to express my
interest in the open job position at the school library. I saw the advertisement
posted on the job board in the career centre.
While I was in high school, I worked as a volunteer at my local library. I helped the
other librarians with checking out books, returning books to the shelves, and
answering the telephones. I spent a year as a volunteer there.
I noticed that the position is part time, which would be great because I still need
some time to study. I have some relevant experience and I’m a person dedicated
to doing a good job. I am available at your convenience and can be reached by
phone or by email.
Sincerely,

You would like to join the local orchestra
Write a letter of application to the orchestra. In the letter:
- Introduce yourself and your instrument of choice
- Explain how your credentials make you a good candidate
- Express your enthusiasm for music
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to the advert placed in The Times regarding the various
available positions in the Urmston Festival Orchestra. My name is Peter
Bedfellows, I am a pianist, and I’ve been a resident of Urmston for over four
years.
I was most recently involved with the Barcelona symphony orchestra, with which
I performed on a regular basis for over nine years. Although I lack formal training,
I have been practising piano for almost two decades, and have recently mastered
such pieces as Prokofiev’s third sonata. I would be happy to perform for a judge
or panel whenever is convenient for you.
My wife and I left Barcelona to be closer to her family, who sadly refuse to leave
Urmston, but I must continue with my music career; it has been my only passion
since I was seven years old.
I welcome the opportunity to discuss this further in
person. Yours faithfully,

Write a letter to the school to apply to be a volunteer. In the letter:
- Introduce yourself and give details of your children who attend the school
- Explain why you are interested in the position
- Talk about any relevant experience that you have with children
Dear Sir or Madam,
My daughter attends your school, and has recently informed me that you are
looking for long-term volunteers to attend school trips. I am the mother of Saffron
Monsoon; she is in fourth year, in Mrs Bonham-Carter’s class.
I thought that since I have such a long relationship with the school I would put
myself forward. I think I might be better prepared than most as I was a primary
school teacher for over four years before having my daughter and leaving my
career.
I work from home the vast majority of the time and so I am looking for
opportunities to participate in community events to make sure that I interact with
other people, and I couldn’t help but think that I’d be a perfect fit for your science
trips.
Do give me a call if there are any places still available.

You would like a job working in the summer camp which runs sports and outdoor
activities for children and young people.
Write a letter to the organisers of the summer camp. In your letter,
• explain what sort of work you would like to do
• describe your personality
• say what relevant experience and skills you have
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have recently found out about your desire to hire someone at the summer camp
to help children and young people. I just thought that I should apply for this job
and gain some rewarding experience this summer.
I am applying to work as a “Camp Leader” at your summer camp, and I am
confident that I have the required qualifications, credentials and skills to
supervise the children and young people and keep them happy and safe, while
also coordinating all of their activities and developing new programmes for them
at the same time.
In the past, I worked with a large group of children at a local children’s club where
I successfully helped them in developing new skills and hobbies. Besides, I also
have experience working as a part-time physical instructor at an elementary
school in my hometown. And as far as my personality is concerned, I am fairly
healthy and energetic, passionate about my responsibilities, and I never lose my
patience that easily.
So, please consider me for the position of 'camp leader' at your summer camp
and see the difference I make with your children and youth.
I would be glad to hear a positive reply from you.

You have seen an advertisement in a newspaper for a property management
position at an apartment complex. You want to apply for the job.
Write a letter to the manager of the apartment complex, and express your interest
in the job. In your letter,
• mention why you are writing
• say why you are suitable for the job
• explain how you would approach the position
Dear Sir or Madam,
Recently, I have seen an advertisement in a local newspaper in which you have
invited applications from suitable candidates to fill in the position of an Assistant
Manager at your apartment complex. So, I would like to apply for the position as I
believe that I have the necessary skills and credentials to do the job.
Talking about my skills and credentials, I worked as a management trainee for
almost nine months at a local super shop right after graduating from high school.
Later on, I also worked as a customer service manager for almost 3 years at a 3-
star hotel apartment. In these roles, I have successfully assisted my senior
managers to perform critical managerial duties while also receiving necessary
managerial tips to tackle critical issues. To complement these experiences of
mine, I also have received a two-year diploma in business management.
Besides, once hired, I would first like to talk to your tenants about the problems
they possibly face while also learning about the cost-effective measures to lower
your apartment maintenance cost. I hope to meet you and talk in a formal
interview at your convenience.

Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised

Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter,
• suggest how you could help her in her home
• say why you would like to do this work
• explain when you will and will not be available
Dear Mrs Barrett,
My name is Elaine Sully, and I am writing this letter to make an enquiry if you still
need somebody to help you at your home. Actually, very recently I have come
across your advertisement in a local newspaper, and I just thought that it would
be a great opportunity for me to earn some extra cash to take a piano lesson
during the next summer while also helping you at your home.
With regards to what sort of assistance I could offer you, I could do anything from
washing dishes to doing and folding laundry. I can even do grocery shopping once
in a while, in addition to preparing some occasional afternoon snacks. And I have
learnt to do all these things right at my home because I have to fill in for the
duties of my mother, who has to leave the house every once in a while for
professional reasons.
By the way, I am available anytime during the weekends from 7:00 am to 11:00
pm and from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm during the weekdays except on Tuesdays. So, if
this fits your need, please let me know.

A museum near your home is looking for people to do part-time voluntary/unpaid
work. You would like to do some voluntary/unpaid work at the museum.
Write a letter to the museum director to apply for the voluntary/unpaid work. In
your letter,
• explain why you want to do voluntary/unpaid work at the museum
• describe some skills and qualities you have that would be useful
• give details of when you would be available for work
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter in response to a recent vacancy announcement at your
museum in which you have asked for people to do part-time voluntary or unpaid
work. I would like to work for your museum as a volunteer, and I am hoping that
you would give me the opportunity.
I am interested in availing this great opportunity because I think that it would
allow me to learn some great skills to have a better career in the future. Besides,
it would also help me understand many important parts of my country’s history
which I would probably never know otherwise.
Regarding my skills, I have good computer skills, and I also know how to work well
in a team environment with other people. Besides, I have taken an art history
class in high school to help me understand and appreciate the value of artworks.
On top of that, I also live close to your museum which would really make it easy
for me to commute. So, if you choose to hire me for this voluntary position, I will
work hard to add value to your team.
I am available to work every day from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm except on Sunday, and
if you decide to hire me, I can start right away.
I am hoping to hear a positive response from you.

You have seen an advertisement from a couple, who live in Australia, for someone
to teach their two children your language for a year.
Write a letter to the couple. In your letter
• explain why you think you would be suitable for the job
• say what else you could do for the family
• give your reasons for wanting the job
Dear Mr and Mrs Henry,
Recently, I came across an advertisement, in which you have asked for someone
from Spain to teach the Spanish language to your two children. I have decided to
apply for it because the opportunity would help me meet the cost of running an
orphanage in a remote village of the war-torn country in Latin America while also
exploring the beautiful continent of Australia at the same time.
In my defence of availing this opportunity, I would like to say that I have a bubbly
and easy-going personality which makes it rather easy for me to relate to the
children. Besides, I have also done babysitting jobs to help a few relatives of mine
to take care of their children and received some formal training on first-hand
experience in childcare. I have also finished a diploma in teaching young children
because I am passionate about teaching them.
In addition to taking care of your children, I could also prepare some delicious
Spanish food and delicacies on some special occasions to surprise your friends
and families.
I am hoping that you would offer me the job. Thank you in advance.
Yours sincerely,
Maria Lucy

You work as a part-time employee in a company. The company has recently
posted an advertisement seeking a person for a full-time position. You want to

notice board, which has asked for a full-time Audit Executive to join your team. I
would like to apply for this post.
In defence of my eligibility for this post, I would like to say that I have learned a
great deal about the important short term and long-term financial goals of our
company after working for almost one year in my current role. Besides, I have also
prepared some financial reports myself under the supervision of my senior
Accounting Manager. And, as far as my educational qualifications are concerned, I
have completed my Master’s degree in Economics with a good GPA. But, most
importantly, I am already very much familiar with this company's culture to
understand where my contributions are needed the most.
So, I am confident that if you hire me for this position, based on my current role
at your company and my qualifications, I surely would be able to render excellent
service to the company.

night classes.
Write a letter to the community college. In your letter,
• say why you are writing
• describe your interest to work as an English teacher
• explain why you would be a suitable teacher for that community college
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest to work as an English teacher at
your community college on the night shift. I am applying for this post in response
to an advertisement which was published in a local daily newspaper a couple of
days ago.
I have been looking for this kind of opportunity for a long time to teach English,
but, because of my day-time job, I have not been able to do it so far. Now that
you are offering such an opportunity, I want to grab it with my two hands, not
only to teach the arts of English communication to the students but also to
contribute to a good cause.
In support of my eligibility to teach English at your college, I have completed a
Bachelor degree in Education, and I have a short certification course on
"Grammar, Vocabulary and Accent Training". Besides, I have also done some
home tutoring in English teaching for young children before.
I am confident that I will be able to do a fine job of teaching English at your
college, only if you give me a chance.

You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live
with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child.
Write a letter to the parents. In your letter
• explain why you would like the job
• give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter in response to an advertisement, published last week in
one of the leading Australian family magazines, where you asked for a short term
live- in caregiver for your six-year-old child. I have proper experiences to take the
best care of your child, and I would like to take the job.
I am confident that I would be able to render a great service in taking care of your
child since I have had a good experience in raising a couple of younger siblings as
the eldest child of my family. Besides, I love children since I consider them as a
bundle of joy, and that is why I took care of some young children as a babysitter in
my hometown. In fact, I find children so special that I have taken a short online
course on parenting so that I could relate to them in a better way.
By the way, I recently came to visit Australia from my home country at the
invitation of my uncle in order to live with him for the next six months or so. And,
while I am in Australia, I would also love to explore this beautiful country and
learn about the lifestyles and culture of its people in addition to taking care of
your child should you choose to offer me the job.

You will go to a foreign country to stay there for one year, and you need a place to
live in. You have decided to write to an agency for accommodation.
Write a letter to the agency to get information about accommodation.
In your letter, say:
• why you are going to this country
• what kind of accommodation you want
• when you will arrive
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to get some details about accommodation in Sydney that your agency
can arrange for me.
I have been accepted at Macquarie University in a research-based Master's
degree programme, and I will start my classes next June. I will stay there for one
year and my wife will accompany me during my stay there. Therefore, I need a
separate accommodation, not the one the university has offered me in its
residence hall.
I am looking for a studio apartment that will not cost me more than $1500 per
month and is located within the walking distance of the university. It would be
ideal if the apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen and fully furnished
rooms with windows that allow natural light and fresh air. It would be a bonus if
we can access shopping malls, markets, a park and other public amenities without
travelling a long distance.
I will fly to Sydney on 29th May and would highly appreciate it if you can send me
details of several accommodations - the kind I am looking for, within the budget.
I am hoping to hear from you soon regarding
this. Yours faithfully,

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:
• explain why you want to work in the company’s head office for six months

Dear Mr George,
I am writing to express my interest in working at our company headquarters in
the United Kingdom for a few months to further enhance my skills and get
exposure to the global market trends of our products so that I can better
contribute to my company and carry out my responsibilities more efficiently.
As you know, I have been recently promoted to the assistant product manager
post and I am working hard to collaborate with my team to enhance the sales and
increase our brand reputation. However, I have been feeling the need to meet
and work with our global team members and attend some training sessions that
our head office in London arranges frequently. I am quite positive that the
opportunity to work in our company’s head office for six months will further
enhance my knowledge, and give me fabulous exposure to the global market
trend.
I have talked to Julian and he has agreed to take up my responsibilities during my
absence. Furthermore, I will check my emails daily, and be available for
emergency phone calls. Once I get back to the office, I would endeavour to work
extra hours in order to catch up on anything I had missed.
Finally, I would need your support to get approval so that I can work in our
company’s head office for six months and fulfil the objectives.
I look forward to your positive reply.

Dear Mr Barron,
I am Robert Caldwell, who sat next to you on a flight from Brisbane to London on
September 18th. You offered me your business card after hearing about my
enthusiasm to work in a restaurant. I am writing regarding my keen interest to

- perhaps as an assistant manager.

You work for an international company. You have seen an advertisement for a
training course which will be useful for your job.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter,
• describe the training course you want to do
• explain what the company could do to help you
• say how the course will be useful for your job
Dear Mr Raynold,
I am writing about a training course titled "Importance of Digital Presence for
Global Expansion of Business", that was advertised in a daily newspaper on 14th
October. I believe it would be helpful for me and hope to get your permission to
participate in it.
In relation to the specifics of the training, it is a four-day intensive session for
brand managers and will be held from 20th to 23rd November. Registration
(materials and meals included) fee is $200, and it needs prior booking. Some
renowned speakers will conduct the training at the BlueText Seminar Hall, and
more than 100 brand managers from different national and multinational
companies are expected to participate in it.
Since this is a resourceful training session and would be helpful for us to expand
our presence to a wider variety of digital channels, I am hoping you would exempt
me from my duties for that time and consider reimbursing me for this seminar. I
will get back to my normal work from 24th November.
It is quite important to take advantage of this opportunity because expanding our
digital footprint and social presence for building comprehensive user engagement
is the key goal for me this year. This seminar promises to make the participants
ready for this challenge. After successful completion of the training, I would be
able to put together actionable steps that I can take immediately to start
engaging more seriously with our users.
Thank you for giving the matter your attention, and I hope to hear from you soon.

You are looking for a part-time job. Write a letter to an employment agency.

You have learned that a financial organisation in your city gives money as a loan to
students who like to take a part-time course. You are interested to do the course and
have decided to take a loan.
Write a letter to a local financial organisation. In your letter,
• give your qualifications and work experience
• give details about the course
• explain how this course will help you
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inquire about the student loan that your bank grants to aspiring
students or professionals to help them finish skill development courses as part-
timers. I am a graduate and my major is physics. I would like to apply for the loan
your bank is offering.
I have earned my bachelor degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2016 and have
been working in a local manufacturing company since then as a junior executive.
Now I feel that I need advanced computer skills to further my career and better
perform in my work field.
The skill development course that I am planning to enrol in offers a comprehensive
six-month-long curriculum intended to enhance the computing skills of professionals.
It includes advanced MS Excel, Database Programming, Computer-aided Design
(CAD), and many other aspects that a professional in the manufacturing sector can
utilise.
As the use of computers and software is predominant in our organisation, I would
not be able to perform excellently without the skills this course offers. The database
concept and Computer-aided Design (CAD) can help me execute my daily tasks in a
more efficient manner. To advance my career, I see no alternatives than to learn
those. However, I need financial help as this course is expensive.
I am hoping that you would disburse the loan so that I can take the course. I need a
loan of not more than $3000, and I am willing to repay the monthly instalment
incurred from the loan over the next two years.
I would really appreciate your consideration and a positive reply.

Your local hospital has advertised people to do unpaid work helping at the

Write a letter to the hospital. In your letter
• explain why you would like to do unpaid work at the hospital
• say what type of unpaid work you would be able to do
• give details of when you would be available for this work
Dear Sir or Madam,
In response to a recent advertisement broadcast on television, I would like to
offer myself as an enlistee for the unpaid work at your hospital. I consider this a
great chance to serve the patients and best utilise my spare time for humanitarian
works. I am hoping that you would let me offer my service.
My parents are doctors and they devote their professional lives to serve people
and society as a whole. I am highly inspired by them and want to do something of
my own for people who need care. What can be a better place to assist people
than in a hospital? Moreover, I have around two hours to spare each day in the
evening and I live nearby. I would like to best use the superfluous hours of my
daily routine in philanthropic work. I have previous experiences of doing some
voluntary works for our community.
I can assist a professional nurse, take care of babies, help patients to move and
bring them meals. I am, in reality, ready to learn to do any type of work to help
people in this hospital. I can work from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm every day except on
Saturday.
Hope you hear your positive response and start my work soon.

I am writing to apply for the part-time weekend job at your hotel that you
advertised in the 'Daily Sunday Times' newspaper on 5th June 2020. I have similar
job experiences and I am hoping that you would look at my resume which I am
attaching with this letter and consider me for the job.
I am Preeti Ghuraiya, studying a general management course at Garden City
College, Bangalore and I can fluently speak English and Hindi. This job opportunity
looks very interesting and something in line with my work experience.
I have worked as a receptionist and a front desk executive with Hotel Holiday Inn
in Delhi from June 2018 till March 2021. I was responsible for interacting with
clients, handling client check-in and checkout and so on. I also have some
experience as a waitress. I believe my job experience would help me perform my
responsibilities effectively in your hotel.
The job description in the newspaper does not give details of the responsibilities.
Would you be able to let me know about the duties that I will be required to do
and if you require any specific skills? I can start immediately and can work for the
whole day every weekend.
Please let me know if you need further information regarding my job experience
and education. I will be able to provide references for my experience.
Looking forward to meeting you to discuss further.
Yours faithfully,
Preeti Arora

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the assistant manager post in your Hotel - The Adventure
Inn, that you have advertised in a local newspaper recently. I would really
appreciate it if you could spare some of your precious time to further discuss my
candidacy in a formal interview.
I would like to work as an assistant manager that would enable me to work
closely with the hotel staff and with the management. This way, I would be able
to best serve my position on the one hand and learn valuable experience on the
other hand.
I have completed my graduation from City University in 2019 and my major was
Tourism and Hospitality. Afterwards, I have worked for two four-star hotels and
my current job as an assistant manager at the Gilbert hotel makes me a suitable
candidate for the post. I do not see enough career growth opportunity with my
current employer and that's why would like to switch my job.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Should you need any further details,
please do not hesitate to call me.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Jenkins
