The Technique of Recycling: Turning Waste into Resources"
Recycling means using old or used materials again to make new products. In Algeria, there was a massive
problem of random rubbish dumps and landfills in urban regions of the country, where the population is
huge and waste collection is challenging. In September 2022, the Algerian government launched a national
campaign of waste collection. This has allowed to collect around 71 tons of waste that would be recycled
into various products.
The Algerian government believes that this strategy could generate up to 150 billion Algerian dinars per
year (More than one billion euros) thanks to the creation of several start-ups specializing in waste recovery.
The local authorities announced that Algeria produces an average of 13.1 million tons of household waste
per year, or one kilogram per person per day. They also declared that 45% of this waste (6.1 million tons)
can be recycled, notably 1.22 million tons of plastic, 1.6 million tons of textile and 300,000 million tons of
glass.
Nonetheless, experts believe that Algeria suffers from a great delay in the use of modern technological
techniques in plastic recycling, which is still difficult to contribute to the national economy. Also, they
believe that the government needs to pass laws to facilitate work for investors and project owners to work
in this field and generate profit.
