DUCATO (290/295) – UREA DOSING CONTROL UNIT
(DCU)
Urea consumption – Network Information
APPLICABILITY
2.3 Mjet Euro 6D Temp
Cancels and replaces SN 10,009.20 of 12/06/2020
CLAIMED FAULT
The customer complains of excessive urea consumption.
The customer complains of the appearance of an inducement message without an
indication of the kilometers on the instrument panel after adding urea.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Ducato has a 19 liter urea reservoir.
The indicative urea consumption for each type of route in ordinary driving conditions is:
Indicative urea consumption (litres/1000km)
Version Urban Extra- urban Motorway Mixed route
(average)
Van / Up to 2.0 Up to 2.0 Up to 6.0 3.0
Panorama
Camper / Up to 2.5 Up to 2.5 Up to 7.0 4.0
Motorhome
Insulated with Up to 3.5 Up to 3.5 Up to 9.0 5.5
refrigerator box
Evidently, these values may be strongly influenced by the type of route (urban/extra
urban/highway/mountain roads), but also driving style, load and environmental
conditions. At high speed (e.g. 150km/h, speed allowed on some motorways in
1
Germany) or transients at full load, consumption may increase even more than that
shown in the table. An urban driving mission characterized by sudden accelerations, for
example, would require more work by the system to abate pollutants with consequent
increase in urea consumption with respect to the values given above.
Additional considerations:
● Some customers who already had E6b vehicles with a urea injection system could
complain of excessive consumption in comparison with the previous emissions standard.
Refer to the values provided previously and explain how the tightening of the standard
has required greater urea use.
● The appearance of the message on the panel (“inducement”) is initially only a warning
and does not indicate the residual range of urea. When the customer has only the
message, the range is between 600 and 1500km (depending on when the message
appeared the first time). As the range decreases, the residual kilometers appear that,
once driven, prevent the vehicle from being started.
The message is not related to the effective quantity of urea in the reservoir, but the
estimate of the residual kilometer range.
High urea consumption due to the combination of high speed/particular versions can
lead to the message ("inducement" without the indication of kilometers) appearing on the
panel also after filling up the reservoir completely.
● The system is able to diagnose abnormal urea consumption related to a possible
malfunction, displaying the suitable error code. If there is no error code, the message on
the panel is related to the estimate of the residual kilometer range and not to
malfunctions; therefore no components require replacement.
The average urea consumption from the beginning of life car can be calculated using the
diagnostic tool as described below.
• Using the diagnostics tool updated to the most recent software release, access vehicle
view, select the urea system control module (DCU – Dosing Control Unit) and open the
Data tab.
• On the Data tab, select the "Total consumed urea" item to display a value that indicates
how many grams of urea have been consumed since the beginning of the car's life
• To determine the value in litres, divide the value in grams by 1.087 (specific weight of
urea) and divide the result by 1000.
• To determine the average urea consumption expressed in liters/1000km, divide the
previously obtained value in liters by the total kilometers driven by the vehicle
Example
For a vehicle with total of 11200 km and value of 30436 grams detected with the
diagnostic tool, the result is:
• Total of 28 litres of urea consumed since the beginning life car (30436 divided by
1.087, and the result divided again by 1000).
• Average consumption of 2.5 litres of urea times 1000 km (28 times 1000 divided by
11200).
