Good Manners and

Right Conduct

1
From the time they are born, children are pure.
Their minds are like clean slates, hence, it is at any
time during this phase, that they begin to record
notes that will eventually determine their
personalities, their attitudes, as they, unconsciously
prepare for their future. Their minds accept all
information without prejudice.
Bearing in mind the importance of this phase of
opportunity, MCA Montessori School, along with the
parents, and the teachers, with all their noble and
ideal intentions, have to, with responsibility, shepherd
these precious individuals into the potential
greatness that they could become.
This book aims to be an essential tool to guide
these young learners as they go about their pursuit of
discovery with the awareness to duty and sensitivity
to uphold what is right.
Hopefully, at the end of this course we may have
contributed substantially that a dent of good shall
have been ingrained in these children’s minds, such
that they build in themselves deep faith in the good;
love of God; love of country; honor and self-worth.

Knowing God First

In the beginning, when God created the heavens and

the earth, the land was a chaotic mass covered with raging
rivers and darkness.
On the first day, God said, “Let there be light”, and
there was light and God saw that the light was good. Then
He separated the light from the darkness, calling the light
Day and the darkness, Night. And there were morning and
evening.

On the second day, God said, “Let there be a firmament in the

midst of the waters to divide it.” He called the firmament, Heaven, dividing
the waters below and above it.

5
On the third day, God said, “Let the waters below the heavens
gather into one place and let the dry land appear.” And so it was. God
called the dry land, Earth and the assembled water seas. And the earth
brought forth seed-bearing plants and fruit trees.

On the fourth day, God said, “Let there be light in the firmament
of the heavens to separate day from night, let them serve as signs for the
fixing seasons, days and years; and serve as light in the firmament of the
heavens to shed light upon the earth.” God made two lights - the greater
light, the sun, to rule the day and the smaller lights, the moon and stars, to
rule the night.

6
On the fifth day, God created winged creatures that could fly
below the heavens and great sea monsters and all kinds of living swimming
creatures in the waters.

On the sixth day, God brought forth all kinds of crawling

creatures and wild animals. He also created man in His image and likeness,
The Lord formed man out of the dust from the sea, the birds of the air, the
cattle, the wild animals and crawling creatures on earth, giving them also
green plants for food.

7
On the seventh day, God rested and blessed this day and made
it holy.

God planted a garden in Eden and put man there. It

was a garden of paradise, for it had all kinds of trees
pleasant to the sight and good source of food. Man was
commanded by God not to eat from the tree of knowledge
of good and evil lest he die. God saw Adam lonely so God
cast him into a deep sleep, then took one of his ribs and
covered it with flesh and Eve came into being. She
became Adam’s wife and the two became one flesh Both
of them were naked but felt no shame. But the devil
tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit from the tree of
knowledge of good and evil. Then they became ashamed
of their nakedness. God sent Adam and Eve out of the
Garden of Eden and the Serpent was cursed to crawl on
his belly from then on.

Living by Faith

Read what faith means.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the
evidence of things not seen.
Faith is having strong and complete confidence or
trust.
It was by faith that made Abel offer to God a better
sacrifice than Cain and won God’s approval as a righteous
man.
It was by faith that kept Enoch from dying because
he was taken up to God and nobody could find him, Enoch
had pleased God before this.

It was by faith that Noah listened to God’s warnings

about things he could not see yet. He obeyed God and
built an ark (boat) and saved his family when the Great
Flood came.
It was by faith that made Abraham obey when God
called him to go out and live as a foreigner in the country
that God had promised him.
By faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden
three months by his parents who were not afraid of the
King’s command to behead him. When he became of age,
Moses chose to suffer affliction with the people of God than
to enjoy the passing pleasure of sin.

14
No one can please God without faith,
for whoever comes to God must have faith that
God exists and God rewards those who seek Him.
(Hebrew 11:1-16).By grace, you have been saved
through faith and this is not from yourselves, it’s
the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8)

True Faith In Ancient Times

Adapted from: Watch Tower Magazine

The record of Jehovah’s acts towards those with true faith

testifies to his dependability. For example, over 4,400 years ago, God told
Noah that the world to his day was to be destroyed by a global flood. He
instructed Noah to build a huge ark for preserving human and animal life.
What did Noah do? Hebrews 11:7 tells us: “By faith, Noah, after being given
divine warning of things not yet beheld, showed godly fear and constructed
an ark for the saving of his household.” Why did Noah have faith in
something that had never happened before, something “not yet beheld”?
Because he knew enough of God’s previous dealings with the human family
to appreciate that whatever God says comes true. So Noah was confident
that the flood would also take place. - Genesis 6:9-22.

15
Another example of true faith is Abraham. Nearly 3,900 years
ago, God told him to sacrifice Isaac, his only son by his wife, Sarah (Genesis
22:1-10). How did Abraham respond? Hebrews 11:17 states: “By faith,
Abraham, when he was tested, as good as offered up Isaac.” However, at
the last moment, Jehovah’s angel stopped Abraham. (Genesis 22:11, 12)
Still, why would Abraham even consider doing such a thing? Because, as
Hebrews 11:19 says, “He reckoned that God was able to raise (Isaac) up
even from the dead.” But how could Abraham have faith in the resurrection
when he had never seen one and there was no previous record of one?

More than 3,400 years ago, when Joshua was over a hundred
years of age and after a lifetime of experiencing how trustworthy God is, he
gave this reason for his confidence. “You well know with all your hearts and
with all your souls that not one word out of all the good words that Jehovah,
your God has spoken to you has failed. They have all come true to you. Not
one word of them has failed.” - Joshua 23:14

About 1,900 years ago, many humble people demonstrated true

faith. They realized from the fulfillment of the bible prophesy that Jesus was
the Messiah and accepted his teachings. Having a solid basis in the facts
and in the Hebrew scriptures, they put faith in what Jesus taught. Thus,
when Jesus said that God’s judgment was coming against Judea and
Jerusalem because of unfaithfulness, they believed him. And when He told
them what course of action they had to take to save their lives, they took it.

Jesus told the believers that when Jerusalem was surrounded by

armies, they should flee. Roman armies did come against Jerusalem in the
year 66 C.E. But then, the Romans left for some unexplained reason. That
was the signal for the Christians to abandon the city for Jesus had said:
“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by encamped armies, you know that
the desolating of her has drawn near.

Then let those in Judea begin fleeing to the mountains and let
those in midst of her withdraw, and let those in the country places not enter
into her” (Luke 21:20,21). Those with true faith abandoned Jerusalem and
the surrounding area and fled to safety.

16
Remember Sarah was 89 when God promised them a son.
Sarah's womb was beyond child-bearing - dead, so to speak (Genesis 18:9-
14) God restored Sarah’s womb to life, and she bore Isaac (Genesis 21:1-3)
Abraham knew that since God restored Sarah’s dead womb to life, then He
could also restore Isaac to life if need be. Romans 7:21 says: “Because of
the promise of God, Abraham did not waver in a lack of faith, but became
powerful by his faith, giving God glory and being fully convinced that what
He had promised, He was also able to do”.

A. God’s Gift of Free Will. Get a partner Read the following
dialogue in class.

A Dialogue on “Free Will”

Setting: In the school ground

Time: Recess

Characters: Rico and Carla - Grade 6 pupils

Rico: Carla, did you understand what our teacher said about “free
will”?

Carla: Yes. Teacher said God gave us the gift of free will so we are
free to choose to follow God’s will and His plan for us.

Rico: Why did God give us that gift?

Carla: Because He loves us so much.

Rico: If God loves us, why does He allow us to do wrong?

Carla: Now, teacher gave us the example of keeping a pet bird in the
age, whom the owner said he loves. The owner also said that
the bird chirps when he feeds it and that the bird loves him, too.
But the bird wants to be free to join other birds to look for
worms. So the owner sets the bird free.

Rico: Oh no. If I am the owner I will not set the bird free. It might not
come back anymore.

Carla: Our teacher said that the owner must set the bird free if he
loves it. And if the bird returns to the owner, that proves that
the bird loves him, too. Right?

26
Rico: Yes, teacher compared the story of the bird to God’s gift of free
will, so we can choose to follow Him or not. If we follow His will,
then God knows that we love Him. If you don’t follow Him,
teacher said God is taking the risk because if there is no risk,
there is no true love. Teacher explained also that God allows
us to go astray and do wrong so we can show whether we love
Him or not. If we choose Him over committing sin, then He is
sure that we love Him.

Carla: Where did Teacher get that explanation?

Rico: She said she read it from the Kerygma - an inspirational

magazine.

Carla: Oh yes. I also see my mother reading it.

Living and Understanding
God’s Words
Read and Make the Bible your friend.
The bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the doom of
sinners, the way to salvation and the happiness of heaven.
Read it to be wise, believe it to be saved, practice it to be holy. It is the
light that will direct you, food to support you and comfort to cheer you.
It is the traveler’s map, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and
the Christian’s charter.

The essence of the Commandments maybe

gleaned from these two verses:

“ Love God with all your heart, with all your

mind, with all your strength and with all your soul.”
“ Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

Every family must pass on the Ten Commandments to the

children. This must be done generation to generation. God commanded that
this be so. Copy and write down two actions that show fulfillment of our
duties on each commandment on your notebook.

Ten Commandments Actions that fulfill

God’s Commandments

no other Gods but me.
2. You must respect the Lord’s name.
3. Keep holy the Lord’s day.
4. Honor your father and your mother.

falsely.

Go For It
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
When the people accepted the Lord’s instructions, the Decalogue
became a covenant between people and God. The first three commands
focus on our duties to God, and the last seven, on our duties toward our
neighbors. This govern our conduct toward God and others around us.
On one bond paper, make a reflection essay. Discuss what could
possibly happen to our personal and community lives if we do not obey God.

Praising and Thanking God

God sends us a steady flow of blessings each second that we

breathe. We give thanks and praise Him because we want to express
ourselves as grateful recipients of His gifts.
Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and other sects give thanks to God
before and after meals. In the Catholic mass and in the church services of
other religious denominations, giving thanks and praises are clearly
expressed. The priest or church leader may say: “Let us give thanks to the
Lord our God.” The people will say: “It is right to give Him thanks and
praise”.
These declarations are admissions of man’s needs for God. Without Him,
we are nothing. We need Him in joy and in pain, in success and in failure.

Answer the following questions.

1. Is it right to give thanks to God? Why?

2. Does God need our praises? Why or why not?

God?

A Unique Individual
The Moth and the Star
By James Thurber

A young and impressionable moth once set his heart on a certain

star. He told his mother about this and she counseled him to set his heart on
a bridge lamp instead.
“Stars aren’t the things to hang around,” she said. “Lamps are
the things to hang around.
“You get nowhere that way, “ said the moth’s father. “you don’t go
anywhere chasing stars.
But the moth would not heed the words of either parent. Every
evening at dusk when the star came out, he would start flying toward it and
every morning at dawn, he would crawl back home, worn out, with his vain
endeavor.
One day, his father said to him, “You haven’t burned a wing in
months, boy, and it seems to me that you are never going to. All your
brothers have been badly burned flying around street lamps and all your
sisters have been terribly singed flying around house lamps. Come on , now.
Get out of here and get yourself scorched! A big strapping moth like you
without a mark on him!
The moth left his father’s house, but he would not fly around
street lamps and he would fly around house lamps. He went on trying to
reach the star, which was four and one-third light years, or twenty-trillion
miles away. The moth thought it was just caught in the top branches of an
elm.
He never did reach the star, but he went right away on trying, night
after night. And when he was very, very old moth, he began to think that he
had really reached the star and he went around saying so. This gave him a
deep and lasting pleasure, and he lived to a great old age. His parents and
his brothers and sisters had all been burned to death when they were quite
young.

58
Answer the following questions.

1. What made the moth different from his parents and siblings?

2. Would you dare to be different like the moth? Why or Why not?

3. What does it mean to be burned in life?

4. Do you want to be different from other members of your family, as well?

5. How would you feel about not reaching your goal or ambitions in life?

6. If the moth outlived his parents, is it ok for him to lie to other moths that
he reached the moon?

Valuing Points

Each day, as you live, you will find yourself in situations where
you will have to make a choice or make decisions. There are times when
you think you made wrong choice and faulty decisions because you may
have done so in a spur of the moment or without even thinking. After which,
you grieve over the outcomes, you regret what you did, and become
disgusted. This is the reason why you need to learn the valuing process.

What are VALUES?

They are standards, the determiners of our attitudes, opinions

and perceptions. “What a person values is what considers himself as
worthwhile.”

Values have uses. They help us determine whether we like

something or not, whether it is important or not. With this values, a person
can plan his life, set his goals, and adapt to the culture he belongs.

Common Classification of Values

1. General Values – values which reflect a society’s orientation and with

are accepted by the majority.
Example: humanism, sense of nationhood, democratic way of life
2. Personal Values – the individual interpretation of general values.
Example: honesty, fairness, clarity, courtesy, self-discipline

74
Classification on who exercises the Values

1. Personal – individual
2. Group – bayanihan
3. Societal – justice, respect for human rights, human dignity

The valuing process consists of three major steps or a 7-point criteria.

First – Choosing

a. Choose freely. Don’t ask anyone to choose for you.

b. Choose from a variety of alternatives.
c. Choose after thoughtful consideration of the consequences of each
alternative.

Second – Prizing

a. Cherish and be happy with what you have chosen.

b. Affirm publicly - let other people know your choice and decision. Do
not be ashamed of it.

Third – Acting
a. Do what you have chosen or decided upon.
b. Do this repeatedly in life situations.

Example of a problem situation:

Your father is the only breadwinner of the family. He

supports three of you, his children, and your Mother who
basically stays at home. One day, he fell ill, and needed
care and attention. Your Mother, who never worked at all,
was suddenly left with the task of providing for the family.
She resorted to applying as a Domestic Helper in
Singapore, and asked all three children (the eldest is in
2nd year high school, you - who is in Grade 6, and the
youngest is in Grade 4) to stop school, and take care of
your sick father.
75
I -Here are the alternative solutions you must have thought of:

1. Not quit school, instead borrow money from rich relatives and help take
care of your sick father after school hours.

2. Not allow your Mother to leave, instead, she stays and takes care of him
while the three of you look for part-time work in the morning and study in
the afternoon.

3. Stop studying and allow Mother to work as a domestic helper.

4. The three children agree to share in the caring of your father while
Mother tries to look for a job but not overseas.

5. Allow Mother to work as a waitress or laundrywoman so you can go to

school.

II. Let your parents know of your decision and feel right about it.

III. Act or execute your decision.

Learning about Value Conflicts

People’s values differ . What may be important to you is not as

important to your brothers, sister or classmates.. When your values do not
agree with theirs, that is called a value conflict.

There are two kinds:

Interpersonal
when your values disagree with other people’s values.

Intrapersonal
when values disagree within yourself.

Conflicts of values is normal. It does not imply who is more right than
the other. It just implies who you are and what is important to you at present.

76
Answer the following questions.

1. Do you let others know the choices you made?

2. Do you ask somebody else to choose for you?

3. Can you make your own decisions?

4. Do you act in line with the choices that you make in life?

Preparing YOU for Responsible
Parenthood
You are on your last year in elementary school next year, you will
enter high school, of which time and age, will begin to be attracted or
attractive to the opposite sex. You will experience what it will be like to fall in
love. Many teenagers, unaware of what to expect and would have not been
taught how to handle these complex situations - plunge into marriage or
teen-age pregnancies, and would later on regret why they did.
Parenthood is a difficult task, and you have to be prepared for it
before it becomes too late. You can begin conversations about it with your
parents, who may react differently, maybe too busy, strict or too liberal, but
there are other people who could provide you with the guidance you
deserve. In school, your Guidance Counselor, and your teacher, your parish
priest in the community, these are some of the people who can give you
advice. You, too, can read counseling books, but all these will depend on
how you heed the counsel and advice to you.
Be responsible. Know that there is more at stake than just being in love.

“response-ability”. We are responsible when we are able to respond
accordingly or properly at the right times.

Honoring our parents is pleasing to God. One way of honoring

our parents is obey them and help them in any way you can. It is important
to realize that we would like to please God not only because we fear Him but
also because we love him.

One of the reasons why God would like to obey our parents is
that we would like us to be safe and guided. Our parents have learned very
valuable lessons in life which will help us become more mature and live well
with others.

Write on your notebook your insights and thoughts about responsible

parenthood.

Ten Commandments of Human
Relations
Twelve years ago, you would have been infants, who, although
asleep, already interacted with your guardian angels. You moved your eyes
then, as if following something, or being in conversation with someone,
and then, you’d smile. After a while, you’d cry - and your Mother would have
guessed, “perhaps, your guardian angel was teasing you, or that she would
have left.”
As infants, the cry would have been symbolic of a need: you
were hungry, you were wet and need to be changed, or would want to be
cuddled. Then, you began to coo - as if you understood, you wanted to play.
Years later, you entered school, you become aware of more
people around you, you develop crushes, you have your friends, and
enjoyed activities in your neighborhood. You have widened your social
circle, you have classmates, teachers, and other school workers.
As you grow, you learn, you choose, which from the values of
those you interact with, you are going to acquire for yourself. They maybe
positive, they may be negative. Recall, that in Unit 2, you learned about the
valuing points, apply these in your choice of friends and in the way you make
your decisions. Use that as a guide so you could carry on meaningful
relationships that will make you and others happy and successful.

HUMAN RELATION COMMANDMENTS

1. Speak to people. There is nothing nicer than cheerfulness and words of
greetings.

2. Smile at people, it takes 65 muscles to frown and only 15 to smile.

3. Call people by name. The sweetest word in anyone’s ear is the sound
of his/her own name.

119
4. Be friendly and helpful. If you want to have friends, be open.

5. Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do were a genuine

pleasure.

6. Be genuinely interested in people. You can like almost anyone - but

only if you try

7. Be generous with praise, but cautious with criticism.

8. Be considerate of the feelings of others, it will be appreciated.

9. Respect other’s opinions. There are always three sides to a

controversy; yours, the other fellow’s and the right one.

others.

Overall, remember, that as you do all these, always put yourself

first - Love your self, be generous to yourself, for always - you could not give
what you do not have.

serve as rich fishing grounds. These rich natural resources, if properly
developed and used, would contribute much to a nation’s strength and
progress.

However, a country’s strength and progress do not depend on its

natural resources alone. Far more than these are its human resources, the
people who will till the land and take care of its forest and water resources,
the people who will preserve and conserve the natural resources not only for
the present but also for the future generations.

God gave us a rich and beautiful country which we can be

thankful for and proud of. Our natural resources are the country’s best
source of our income and an important factor which contributes to the
strength and power of a nation.

128
Our farmlands, forests, fishing grounds, birds and animals are
resources which can be replaced. For instance, we can plant seeds and
young trees, the small fishes will grow, birds and animals produce their
young, etc. But our mineral resources like oil, carbon, gold, silver, chromite,
nickel cannot be replaced. They are easily used up by growing population.
