1 Real Analysis
1. Let u, v be sequences which converges to U, V respectively. Prove the following.
(a) u + v converges to U + V .
(b) u − v converges to U − V .
(c) uv converges to U V .
u U
(d) v
converges to V
provided that V ̸= 0.
2. Suppose limn→∞ un = ∞, limn→∞ vn = ∞.
Show that limn→∞ un + vn = ∞. We can agree to write ∞ + ∞ = ∞. In the same way justify the
following notation with b ∈ R
(a) ∞ + b = ∞
(b) b∞ = ∞ if b > 0
(c) b∞ = −∞ if b < 0
(d) ∞∞ = ∞
a
(e) ∞
=0
(f) Show that you can’t have a consistent notation for ∞ − ∞, 0∞, ∞ , 0 . Hence these are called
∞ 0
indeterminate forms (together with 00 , ∞0 , 1∞ ).
2 Ordinary Differential Equations & Riemann Integration
1. Let f : [0, 1] → R be defined by
(
4x, x = 0.25
f (x) =
̸ 0.25
2x + 1, x =
Show that f is Riemann integrable on [0, 1] using the Riemann criterion.
(a) If we define f (0.25) = c, where c is a real constant, will the result change? Why or why not?
(b) Evaluate the integral: Z 1
f (x) dx
0
where (
c, x = 0.25
f (x) =
̸ 0.25
2x + 1, x =
for some real constant c.

2. Let f : [0, 2] → R be defined by
(
x, x ∈ Q
f (x) =
x2 , x ∈ R \ Q
Show that f is not Riemann integrable on [0, 2].
3. Show that every monotonic decreasing function f on the interval [−1, 1] is Riemann integrable.
(a) Provide a counterexample of a monotonically decreasing function on [−1, 1] that has an infinite
number of discontinuities.
(b) Give a counterexample of a function that is monotonically strictly decreasing and continuous
on [−1, 1].
4. Define a function f : [0, 1] → R by
(
1, if x = n1 for some n ∈ N,
f (x) =
0, otherwise.
R1
Show that f is Riemann integrable on [0, 1] and find 0
f (x) dx.
5. Let f (x) = 3x + 1 be defined on [0, 1].
(a) Show that f is Riemann integrable on [c, 1] for all c ∈ (0, 1).
(b) By considering the previous result only, show that f is Riemann integrable on [0, 1].
