Chapter 4 Examples

The document presents two examples of slab design: a one-way slab and a two-way slab, detailing the parameters, materials, and calculations involved in each design. Example 21 focuses on a rectangular one-way slab supported by masonry walls, while Example 22 involves a two-way slab designed for a gymnastic purpose with specific load considerations. Both examples include material specifications and reinforcement details necessary for structural integrity.

Example 21, One-Way Slab
A rectangular concrete slab is simply supported on masonry wall
of 250mm thickness and the spacing between the masonry wall
is 3.75m. The slab has to carry a distributed permanent action of
1kN/m2 (not including self weight) and a variable action of
3kN/m2. The material to be used are concrete class of C25/30
and S-460 (Class B) steel. The slab is inside building which can
resist 1 hour fire and is designed for a design life of 50 years.
Design the slab. (Assume the diameter of bar to be 10mm)
The layout and cross-sectional views of the slab is shown below

Take the following parameters:
• Unit weight of Marble floor finish (γff) = 27kN/mm3
• Unit weight of Cement screed (γcs) = 23kN/mm3
• Unit weight of Reinforced concrete (γff) = 25kN/mm3
• Unit weight of Ceiling plaster (γff) = 27kN/mm3

Example 22, Two-Way Slab
Consider a floor plan shown below. All panels in the floor level
are suppose to serve for gymnastic purpose. A partition load of
3kN/m2 can be considered. The material to be used are concrete
class of C20/25 and S-400 (Class B) steel. Assume the thickness
of the slab to be 180mm and concrete cover of 20mm. Design
the interior panel on axis A-B/2-3 (Panel 3) and show the
reinforcement on sketch of the cross-section and in plan. The
finishing materials are 20mm marble, 30mm cement screed and
20mm ceiling plaster
