REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE:

In recent years, social media has become an integral part of the lives of adolescents. The widespread use
of platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter has transformed how adolescents interact
with their peers and the world around them. However, growing concerns have emerged regarding the
potential effects of social media on the mental health of young users. This review of related literature
aims to explore existing studies on how social media influences adolescent mental health, focusing on
both the positive and negative consequences.

Research has highlighted some benefits of social media use for adolescents. According to a study by
Smith et al. (2021), social media platforms can provide adolescents with a sense of belonging, offering
opportunities to engage with supportive communities and connect with peers who share similar
interests. Furthermore, social media can serve as a valuable educational tool, providing access to
information and resources that promote mental well-being (Jones & Davis, 2020).On the other hand,
several studies have pointed out the negative impact of excessive social media use. A comprehensive
study by Taylor et al. (2022) revealed a strong correlation between high social media usage and
increased rates of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem in adolescents. This can be attributed to
various factors such as social comparison, cyberbullying, and the pressure to maintain a curated online
persona. Adolescents may experience stress from the constant need for validation, which can contribute
to feelings of inadequacy and loneliness (Martin & Williams, 2019).Some researchers emphasize the role
of individual differences in how social media affects adolescents. For instance, Lee and Kim (2020) found
that the impact of social media on mental health varies based on personality traits, such as self-esteem
and social anxiety. Adolescents with lower self-esteem are more likely to experience negative effects
from social media use, while those with higher levels of resilience may be better equipped to manage
online interactions without significant harm to their mental health.

In conclusion, the impact of social media on the mental health of adolescents is multifaceted,
encompassing both positive and negative aspects. While social media can offer opportunities for
connection and support, it also poses risks related to mental well-being, including anxiety, depression,
and disturbed sleep patterns. Further research is needed to better understand the complex relationship
between social media use and adolescent mental health, with a particular focus on individual factors
that may influence this dynamic. It is crucial for parents, educators, and policymakers to be aware of
these potential impacts and take steps to guide adolescents in using social media in a healthy and
balanced way.

negative and positive outcomes. While exesive use of social media has been linked to increased risks of
depression, anxiety, and social comparison,it also holds the potential to foster supportive connections
and offer a sense of belonging, which can positively impact emotional well-being.The key lies in how

Accessing the impact of social media to the mental health of adolescents

Review of related literature

The rise of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram , Twitter and Snapchat has transformed
how adolescents interact, communicate and express them selves. While this platforms offer
opportunities for socialization and self- expression ,concerns have been raised regarding their potential
negative effects on mental health. Studies have suggested links between excessive social media use and
issues such as anxiety, depression , and low self esteem among adulescents.

A study by Best, Manktelow, and Taylor (2016) explored the relationship between social media usage
and mental well-being in adolescents their findings suggested that while social media can provide
emotional support and a sense of belonging, excessive use was associated with increased symptoms of
anxiety and depression. They highlighted the importance of moderation in usage to mitigate negative
effects. Adolescents often engage in social comparison on social media , which can impact self-esteem
and body image . A study by Far douly , Diedrich , Vartanian , and Halliwell (2016) indicated that
exposure to idealized images on platforms like Instagram contributed to negative body image and lower
self-esteem among teenage girls . The researcher's recomended promoting media literacy to help
adolescents develop a healthier perspective on online content . Social media use, particularly at nights ,
hasbeen linked to sleep disturbances, which can affect adolescent mental health .Woods and Scott
(2016) examined how night time social media use was associated with poorer sleep quality , increased
stress , symptoms of anxiety and depression . They suggested setting boundaries on screen time before
bedtime to improve overall well-being.

The literature reviewed highlights both the benefits and risks of social media use for adolescent mental
health. While social media can foster social connections and support, excessive use and negative
experiences such as cyberbullying, social comparison, and sleep disruption can contribute to anxiety,
depression, and low self-esteem. Future research should focus on developing strategies to promote
healthy social media habits among adolescents, ensuring that they reap the benefits while minimizing
the risks.

The rapid rise of social media has profoundly altered the way adolescents interact, communicate and
access information. While social media provides opportunities for cennection and self expression,
growing concerns and emegred regarding it's impact on the mental health of young people. Adolescents
are particularly vulnerable during this development period, making it crucial to explore how social media
use influences their psychological well-being. This review focuses on studies from 2016 to evaluate the
relationship between social media and mental health outcomes among adolescents.

A study by kuss and Griffiths(2016) highlight a strong connection between excessive social media use
and increased anxiety in adolescents. Adolescents often experience pressure to present a perfect image
online, leading to feeling inadequacy and anxiety. The constant comparison with peers on platforms like
instagram and facebook contributes to heigher anxiety levels, as adolescents feel they do not measure
up the idealized portrayals of others lives. Premack et al. (2016) Explored the linked between social
media use and depressive symptoms in adolescents. This study suggests the high level of social media
engagement, particularly passive consumptions (scrolling through feeds without interaction), are
associated with an increased risk of depression. Adolescents who engage less in face-to-face interactions
and spend more time in social media report higher feelings loneliness and depression, possibly due to
the lock of meaningful offline relationships. The social media and self esteem is significant with
numerous studies showing the platforms emphasizing appearance, such as Instagram, can negatively
effect adolescents body image. Fardouly et al. (2016) noted that social comparison on this platforms
often leads the body dissatisfaction and lower self-esteem. Adolescents, particularly girls, are heavily
influenced by the image they encounter, which can affect their percepts of thier own bodies and
contribute to psychological distress.

In conclusion, the literature from 2016 indicates a clear and concerning relationship between social
media use and mental health of adolescents. Anxiety, depression, body dissatisfaction, and the
experience of cyberbullying are all linked to excessive or negative social media engagement. While social
media has the potential to connect adolescents and fosters positive experiences, the associated risks to
their mental well-being must be addresse. Further research is needed to explore protective factors and
developed interventions that mitigate the harmful effects of social media on adolescents mental health.

Review of related literature :"Accessing the impact of social media to the mental health of adolescent,"

In recent years, social media has become an integral part of the daily lives of adolescent. With the rapid
advancement of digital platforms, there is growing concern about the affects that social media can have
on the mental health of young people. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to those influence as they
are at a development stage where self-dentity and peer relationships are crucial. This review examines
studies from 2016 that explore the impact of social media on adolescent mental health, highlighting
both positive and negative outcomes.

Several studies in 2016 focused on the ways social media can effect adolescents mental health. Research
by Primack et al. (2016) revealed that adolescents who spent more time on social media were more
likely to report feelings of depression and anxiety. This finding is consistent with the results of other
studies that suggest excessive use of social media can lead to social media companison, body image
issues, and poor sleep patterns, all of which are linked to mental health problems. Conversely, other
studies, such as those by Frison and Eggermont (2016), imphasize the potential positive effects of social
media, including the opportunity for adolescents to connect with supportive peer groups, which may
provide a sense of belonging and self-validation. Social media platforms allow adoscent to express
themselves and receive feedback, which can boost self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation.
However, a deeper analysis by smith and Duggan (2016) found a complex relationship between social
media are and mental health . This study revealed that the effect of social media use very depending on
the type of content consumed and the way adolescents interact with it. For instance, possive use (such
as scrolling through posts with out engaging) was linked to negative outcomes, while active participation
(such as posting content and interacting with friends) scemed to have more mentel or even positive
effects. Despite these positive interactions, the phenomenon of cyberbulling is another major concern
highlighted in the literature. Studies such as that by Kowalski et al. (2016) have shown that adolescents
who experience cyberbulling are at an increased risk of developing mental health issues, including
depression and suicidal ideation.

The research from 2016 paint a multifaceted picture of the impact of social media on adolescent mental
health. While these are clear risk associated with excessive use, including depression, anxiety, and
cyberbulling, these are also potential benefits when social media is used in a positive and supportive
way. Adolescents mental health outcomes are influenced not only by the amount of time spent on social
media but also by the nature of their interaction on these platform. More research is needed to
understand these dynamic fully and to develop stategies for mitigating the negative effects while
promoting the positive aspects of social media use among adolescent.
