Assignment # 02

The document outlines an assignment for EEE 223 Signals and Systems, focusing on the convolution of two continuous-time signals using Matlab. It includes specific tasks related to determining conditions for zero and non-zero outputs, computing results, and comparing methods for analog and discrete convolutions. The assignment is due on March 30, 2025, and requires the use of real constants for signal parameters.

EEE 223 Signals and Systems Spring 2025 FA23-BS(EE)-A Assignment # 02 Marks: 20

Assigned Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2025 Submission Date: Sunday, March 30, 2025, by 3 PM

Consider that we want to perform the convolution of two continuous-time

signals in time domain and generate the output using Matlab software as a
tool. The two signals are defined below: The input signal, x(t) = A, for 0 ≤ t ≤
T1 and the impulse response of the system, h(t) = B, for 0 ≤ t ≤ T2. Where A,
B, T1 and T2 are given real constants and A ≠ B. Answer the following
questions for the following two cases, a) when T1 ≠ T2 and b) when T1 = T2
= T:
a) For what values of the time, t the result of convolution, i.e., the output,
y(t) = x(t) * h(t) = h(t) * x(t) is completely zero.

b) For what values of the time, t the result of convolution, i.e., the output,
, y(t) = x(t) * h(t) = h(t) * x(t) is Not zero.

c) Compute and draw the output, y(t) using Matlab for all values of time,
t using appropriate real values of A, B, T1 and T2 .

d) Can we get the result for case b) from the result of case a), if yes,
then, kindly specify how we can achieve it?

e) How can we verify the computations that these are valid? Briefly
explain.

f) How can the above method and computations be modified for discrete
time convolutions in discrete domain? Kindly illustrate the steps
involved and draw the discrete output, y[n] for the above two cases.

g) Make a comparison of the two methods used for performing Anolog

and discrete convolutions in the form of a table?
