Theoretical framework refers to the set of theories and concepts that support and explain the
basis of the study. It helps to understand how different factors are related and how they
influence the functioning of the subject under study—in this case, Power Grid Corporation
and the power transmission sector.
5.2 Key Concepts Related to Power Transmission
a) Electric Power Transmission
Power transmission refers to the bulk movement of electrical energy from generating stations
to electrical substations located near demand centers. Transmission lines operate at high
voltage to reduce energy loss over long distances.
b) National Grid System
India’s National Grid is a synchronized transmission network that enables the transfer of
electricity across the country. PGCIL is responsible for developing and maintaining this grid.
c) Load Dispatch Centers (LDCs)
These are centralized systems that manage electricity demand and supply in real time. The
National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC) and Regional Load Dispatch Centres (RLDCs)
ensure grid discipline and stability.
d) Grid Management
This includes real-time monitoring, scheduling, load balancing, and ensuring
voltage/frequency stability to avoid blackouts. POWERGRID uses advanced SCADA
systems for this purpose.
e) Transmission Losses
Electricity loss occurs during transmission. These are categorized as technical and
commercial losses. Reducing these losses is essential for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
5.3 Regulatory Framework
Central Electricity Authority (CEA): Advises government on technical aspects of
electricity policy and planning.
Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC): Regulates tariffs, licensing,
and grid operations.
Ministry of Power (MoP): Formulates national power policies and oversees their
implementation.
