DEBATE: Supporting the motion; ‘Banning single-use plastics is better’.
Good day Mr chairman, honorable judges, time keeper, my worthy opponents, ladies and
gentlemen, I stand before you today with my team and we are here not just to argue, but to declare
with unwavering conviction that banning single-use plastics is not merely a good idea, but an urgent and
undeniable imperative for the future of our planet and generations to come.
To begin with let’s define our key term, which are single-use plastics and banning. Single-use plastics are
items made from plastics intended to be used once and then discarded. Items such as plastic bags,
straws, plastic bottles, cutlery etc. Banning means officially prohibiting the manufacture, sale or use of
these items.
Single-use plastics are polluting our planet at an alarming rate. Each year the world produces
over 300 million tons of plastic and a significant portion is single-use. These items often end up in
oceans, rivers and landfills, where they take hundreds of years to decompose, harming marine life and
poisoning the ecosystem. Moreover, plastic waste in our oceans harms human health, as microplastics
are ingested through seafood and other food sources.
Banning single-use plastics is not just an environmental issue; it is also an economic and social
imperative. The production and disposal of single-use plastics waste valuable resources, pollute our
environment and harm human health. By switching to reusable alternatives, we can create jobs,
stimulate innovation and reduce waste management costs.
Some may argue that banning single-use plastics will inconvenience or harm businesses.
However, I counter that the benefits far outweigh the costs. Alternatives like reusable bags, water
bottles and straws are already available and affordable. Moreover, business can adapt and innovate,
creating new products and opportunities that benefit both the environment and their bottom line.
Banning single-use plastics is not about going backward. It is about moving forward towards a cleaner,
healthier and more responsible future.
In conclusion, banning single-use plastics is not just a policy decision; it is a profound
declaration of our commitment to a healthy planet, a thriving future and a legacy of responsibility. Let us
choose life over waste. Let us ban single-use plastics, because it is not just better, it is absolutely
essential.
