Detailed Lesson Plan: The Benefits of Recycling in Our Environment

Grade Level: Grade 4

Subject: Science / Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP)
Duration: 60 minutes
Theme: Environmental Conservation and Sustainability
Topic: The 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Focus: Understanding the environmental benefits of recycling and promoting sustainable practices

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Define recycling and distinguish it from reducing and reusing.

2. Identify common recyclable materials and understand their environmental impact.

3. Explain how recycling conserves natural resources, saves energy, and reduces pollution.

4. Demonstrate proper waste segregation and recycling practices.

5. Reflect on personal actions to contribute to environmental sustainability.

Materials Needed

 Visual aids: Images or actual samples of recyclable materials (paper, plastic, glass, metal)

 Multimedia: Short video on recycling processes (e.g., BrainPOP's "Recycling")

 Recycling bins or labeled containers for activity

 Worksheets: Recycling sorting chart, reflection prompts

 Art supplies: Construction paper, markers, glue, scissors

 Old newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, and other recyclable items for activities

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES:

1. PRAYER
2. CHECKING OF ATTENDANCE
3. SINGING A SONG

Lesson Procedure

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

 MOTIVATION

Begin with a question: "What happens to our trash after we throw it away?"

 PRESENTATION

Introduce the concept of the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Visual Aid: Show images or samples of recyclable and non-recyclable items.

2. Instructional Input (15 minutes)

 Video Presentation: Watch a short educational video on recycling processes.

DISCUSSION: Highlight key points:

o Recycling reduces the need for raw materials, conserving natural resources.

o It saves energy; for instance, recycling aluminum saves up to 95% of the energy required
to produce new aluminum from raw materials.

o Recycling decreases pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Activity: Recycling Sorting Game (15 minutes)

 Setup: Prepare mixed items (clean recyclables and non-recyclables).

 Instructions: Students work in groups to sort items into appropriate bins labeled: Paper, Plastic,
Glass, Metal, and Trash.

 Debrief: Discuss any challenges faced during sorting and clarify doubts.

APPLICATION:

Creative Application: Recycled Art Project (10 minutes)

 Task: Using collected recyclable materials, students create art pieces or useful items (e.g., pencil
holders from cans, collages from magazines).

 Objective: Encourage creativity while reinforcing the concept of reusing materials.

GENRALIZATION:

Reflection and Sharing (10 minutes)

 Worksheet: Students complete a reflection prompt: "One way I can help the environment
through recycling is..."
 Sharing: Volunteers share their reflections with the class.

Assessment

 Participation: Active involvement in discussions and activities.

 Worksheet Evaluation: Accuracy in the recycling sorting chart and depth of reflection responses.

 Creative Project: Originality and effective use of recyclable materials.

Extension Activities

 Home Connection: Assign students to implement a recycling system at home and document
their experience.

 Community Engagement: Organize a school-wide recycling drive or a visit to a local recycling

facility.

 Cross-Curricular Integration: Incorporate math by calculating the amount of waste reduced

through recycling efforts.

Cultural and Environmental Relevance

In the Philippines, waste management is a pressing issue. By educating students on recycling, we

empower them to take active roles in environmental conservation. This lesson not only aligns with the
K–12 curriculum but also fosters a sense of responsibility and community engagement among young
learners.
