RTP Header Fields and Their Functions

Field Size Function

V (Version) 2 bits Indicates the RTP version. Current version is 2.

P (Padding) 1 bit Indicates presence of padding bytes at the end.

X (Extension) 1 bit Indicates presence of extension header.

CC (CSRC Count) 4 bits Number of CSRC identifiers following the fixed header.

M (Marker bit) 1 bit Marks significant events such as frame boundaries.

PT (Payload Type) 7 bits Indicates format of the payload (e.g., codec type).

Sequence Number 16 bits Used to detect packet loss and maintain order.

Timestamp 32 bits Sampling time of first payload byte for sync and jitter.

SSRC 32 bits Unique identifier for the RTP stream source.

CSRC 32 bits each Identifiers for contributing sources (optional).

Payload Variable Contains the actual audio/video data.
