PROTOTYPE
DEVELOPMENT

3
Step 1: Requirement Gathering and Analysis
What you expect ?
Step 2: Quick Design
Basic design (quick overview)
Step 3: Build a Prototype
Step 4: Initial User Evaluation
Preliminary Testing
Step 5: Refining Prototype
Improving as per the client’s response
Step 6: Implement Product and Maintain
Final system is distributed and is run
regularly
4
Types of Prototyping Models
1) Rapid Throwaway Prototyping
Exploring ideas and getting customer feedback for each of them.
2) Evolutionary Prototyping
Incrementally refining based on customer feedback till it gets accepted.
3) Incremental Prototyping
Final expected product is broken into different small pieces of prototypes and
developed individually.
4) Extreme Prototyping
Mainly used for web development.

STEPS IN PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT
PROCESS
1. Idea Generation
What to do? :
Brainstorming and screening ideas to identify potential solutions to a
problem
Checklist:
Brainstormed ideas – List of all possible solutions generated during
brainstorming.
Shortlisted options – Refined list of ideas that are considered practical and
worth pursuing.
Outcome:
Problem statement – A clear statement defining the problem to be solved.
Final idea list – A list of selected ideas that will move forward to the next
phase.

2. Planning and Designing
What to do? :
Define requirements and specifications
Create blueprint
Checklist:
Identifying stakeholders
Technical Specifications
Outcome:
Technical Blueprint(diagrams,flowcharts)
Requirement Matrix
7
3. Product Development
What to do:
Make a simple version of the product
Fix problems and refine design
Checklist:
Is the prototype working?
Outcome:
Working model of the product
Test Notes
8
4. Viability and Review
What to do:
How much will it costs to make and sell the product?
Can it be produced easily(Checking Feasibility)?
Checklist:
Are the costs reasonable?
Do you need to adjust the design or budget?
Outcome:
Cost Report and an updated plan(if)
9
5. Iteration
What to do:
Collect Feedback
Checklist:
Have you fixed the issues raised by users?
Outcome:
Updated Prototype
10
6. Testing
What to do:
Test Functionality(Does it work as expected?)
Checklist:
Are users satisfied?
Outcome:
List of Test results
11
7. Commercialization
What to do:
Develop pricing and marketing strategy
Checklist:
Do you have a strong marketing plan
Outcome:
Market Launch
