This standard was developed in cooperation with Deutsche Verband fur

SchweiBtechnik (DVS). In conjunction with contents in this standard, Z
refers to the percentage by mass (previously percentage by weight). ft
Dimensions in mm

1 Field of application
This standard is applicable to welding filler metals for fusion welding
(preferably for shielded arcwelding (SG), but also gas welding (G),
manual arc welding (E) of aluminum and aluminum alloys.

The materials are specified in DIN 1712, Part 3, DIN 1725 Part 1 and 2.

2 Classification and description of welding filler metals

The following factors determine the classification of welding filler
metals:
a) With wire electrodes, welding wires and welding rods for shielded
arc welding and gas welding it is the chemical composition of the
filler metal,
b) With covered rod electrodes it is the chemical composition of the
weld metal.

~ Wire electrodes, welding wires and welding rods

Wire electrodes, welding wires and welding rods are used with a
metallic-bare surface; they are identified SG.

The chemical composition of welding filler metals is contained in table

1; the physical properties of the weld metal and examples of use are
listed in tables 2 and 3.

2.2 Covered rod electrodes
Covered rod electrodes consist of a core rod and cover and are
consumably melted using current. If not specified otherwise by the
manufacturer, direct current shall be used. Welding properties are
primarily determined by the composition of the core rod and the cover.

Covered rod electrodes are identified EL.

4 Technical specifications

4.1 Dimensions (see table 4)

4.2 Material condition. quality

4.2.1 Wire electrodes, welding wires, welding rods
The surface of welding filler metals must be free from impurities and
surface flaws which may adversely affect the welding process.

Wire electrodes and welding wires must be coiled in one length on spools
as specified in DIN 8559 Part 1. They must be free from kinks,
undulations or other irregularities which impair continuous welding.
Both ends of the wire have to be secured. Wire electrode and welding
wire must not be twisted. This requirement is considered as complied
with when the not securede wire end does not raise by more than 50 mm
above a plane surface.
1JJN11.32 Part. 1
page 6a
4.3 Packing
Welding filler metals must be packed in such a way that, suitable
transport and storage provided, adequate protection against damage,
impurities and moisture is ensured.

4.4 Storage
Up until their use, welding filler metals should be stored in their
undamaged origina1 p~cki~g. ~he storage space ~ust be enclosed, vented
and dry.

Redrying of rod el~ctrQQ~~

In individual cases it may be necessary to redry rod electrodes whose

cover reveals an excessive moisture content (as a result of improper
storage or other conditions), directly before the welding. Redrying
temperature and duration sould be chosen in accordance with manu-
facturer's specification.

4.6 Quality proof

As a rule, the specification of production and/or batch number ace. to
section 5.1 or 5.2 is satisfactory quality proof. Should additional
proofs be required, they must be agreed between purchaser and supplier
and certified according to DIN 50049.

The alloying constituents and additives are usually determined according

to the analysis methods specified by the manufacturer.

Umpire analyses or samplings must be executed according to the latest

edition of "Analyse der Metalle" by the chemist's committee of the
Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhutten- und Bergleute e.V., volume I
"Schiedsanalysen" or in the supplement to volumes I "Schiedsanalysen",
II "Betriebsanalysen" and volume III "Probennahrne".

5 Identification marking

5. l Wire electrodes, welding wires and welding rods

According to manufacturer's choice, the bundels of wire electrodes,
welding wires and welding rods are marked on tags or adhesive labels
bearing the following information:
- Trade designation
- Manufacturer or supplier
Designation according to section 3
- Batch or production n~~ber

- Diamer:er
- Weight

Welding rods must be marked individually and durably in such a way that
their pertinence to a given alloy can be ascertained. The manufacturer
should be identifiable.

5.2 Covered rod electrodes

In the vicinity of the clamping end, each rod electrode on its covering
must be marked with an easily legible stamp ascertaining its pertinence
to a given alloy. As a rule, the trade designation of a rod electrode is
imprinted. However, other symbols or codes also may be agreed, e.g.
according to table 1 or AWS*).
Packs of rod electrodes should contain the following information:
- Trade designation
- Manufacturer or supplier
- Designation according to section 3
- Batch or production number
- Diameter and length of core rod
- Current and polarity
- Recommended range for welding current intensity
- Notes on possibly necessary redrying
(temperature and duration)
- Number of rod electrodes per pack and/or net weight

Explanatory notes
Under the revision of existing standards, DIN 1732 Part 1 was adapted to
the subsequent editions of materials standards DIN 1712 Part 3, DIN 1725
Part 1 and Part 2.

When aluminum is manually arc-welded using rod electrodes, there is no

change to the alloy composition via the covering. The chemical
composition of wire electrodes, welding wires and welding rods and of
the weld metal of covered rod electrodes could, therefore, be compiled
in table 1. Manual arc welding is preferably used for repair welding. It
may no longer be used for the joining of pa~·ts requiring supervision.

The formerly used identification of all welding filler metals with the
symbol S was replaced by SG for wire electrodes, welding wires and
welding rods and by EL for covered rod electrodes. The identification
letter E used nationally and internationally for rod electrodes for
welding unalloyed and alloyed steels cannot be used for rod electrodes
in the nonferrous field as it is already used to designate nonferrous
materials with defined limits of specific conductivity, e.g.
E-Cu5 7, E-Al.

Up until now the data on chemical composition, physical properties and

use of welding filler metals were comprised in a single table. In line
with comparable standards these data under the revision were broken down
into 3 tables to improve clarity.

The welding filler metals listed in table 1 corresponds to state-of-the-

art. The welding filler metals SG-A1Mg2Mn0.8, SG-A1Mg2Mn0.8Zr,
SC-A1Mg2.7Mn, SG-AlMn2.7MnZr, SG-AlMg4.5MnZr and SG-AlSilOMg are newly
listed in the table.

SG-A1Mg2Mn0.8 and Sg-A1Mg2.7Mn are primarily destined for welding

components which are used with operating temperatures in excess of 60°C.
On account of their better crack resistance under elevated temperatures,
the zircon-containing welding filler metals SG-A1Mg2Mn0.8Zr,
SC-AlMg4.5MnZr, SG-AlMg2.7MnZr are preferably used for complex welding
constructions with difficult clamping conditions. SG-AlSilOMg is
destined for castings of hardening alloys which are subjected to heat
treatment after the welding process.

In the revised edition, recommended minimum values of tensile strength

for forward-fed wire electrodes were deleted in the information on
delivery condition. According to the state-of-the-art these data are no
longer required.

Information on strength properties of the pure weld metal for the

welding filler metals are contained in DI~ 1732 Part J "Welding fiLler
metals for aluminum and aluminum alloys; test pieces, specimens;
mechanical-technological minimum values of the pure weld metal." DIN
1732 Part 2 "Welding filler metals for aluminum; testing by welded
joints" is currently being revised.
