Already, Still, Just, Yet Practice
Already, Still, Just, Yet
● Already: When something has happened earlier than expected.
○ “By the time I arrived at the grocery store, they had already
closed.
● Still: Until the present time. When something is happening for longer
than expected.
○ “You still haven’t finished your homework?”
● Just: When something happened very recently.
○ “I don’t want to watch that movie, I just saw it at the movie
theater yesterday.”
● Yet: When something has not happened that was expected to
happen earlier. Typically at the end of a negative sentence or
question.
○ Negative: “I haven’t done my homework yet.”
○ Question: “Have you done your homework yet?”
Writing Exercise: Already, Still, Just, Yet
Example: Last Tuesday, I had a difficult day. I had just woken up when I
saw that I had slept through my alarm. I immediately jumped out of bed to
make a quick breakfast. I quickly realized that my brother still hadn’t
washed the dishes in the sink. I decided to leave for work before I missed
the bus. When I got to the bus stop, I realized that the bus I needed to
take had already left. I decided to run to work so that I would get there
before my boss. When I walked into the office, my coworker told me our
boss had not arrived yet. What a day!
