Introduction
A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy
between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. It is
widely used in electrical power systems to increase or decrease voltage
levels. The transformer is a vital component in modern electricity
transmission and distribution systems.
Theory
A transformer operates on the principle of mutual induction, discovered by
Michael Faraday. When an alternating current (AC) flows through the
primary coil, it produces a changing magnetic field, which induces an
electromotive force (EMF) in the secondary coil.
Transformer Equation:
(Vp/Vs) = (Np/Ns) = (Is/Ip)
where:
Vp = Primary voltage
Vs = Secondary voltage
Np = Number of turns in the primary coil
Ns = Number of turns in the secondary coil
Ip = Primary current
Is = Secondary current
Depending on the number of turns in each coil, the transformer can either

step up (increase) or step down (decrease) voltage.
Construction
A basic transformer consists of:
- Core: Usually made of laminated soft iron to reduce eddy currents and
energy loss.
- Primary Coil: Connected to the input voltage source.
- Secondary Coil: Connected to the output load.
The primary and secondary coils are wound on the same core but are
electrically isolated.
Working
When an AC voltage is applied to the primary coil:
1. It produces an alternating magnetic flux in the core.
2. This flux links the secondary coil.
3. According to Faraday's law, this changing magnetic flux induces an EMF
in the secondary coil.
4. Depending on the ratio of turns, the voltage across the secondary coil
is either higher (step-up) or lower (step-down) than the primary voltage.
Applications
- Power Transmission: Step-up transformers increase voltage for
long-distance transmission, reducing losses.
- Distribution: Step-down transformers reduce voltage for safe use in
homes and industries.
- Electronic Devices: Transformers are used in adapters and chargers to
adjust voltage levels.
Advantages
- Efficient energy transfer with minimal losses.
- Simple design and easy maintenance.

Physics Project: Transformer
- Can step up or step down voltage as required.
Precautions
- Always handle electrical devices with care to prevent shocks.
- Avoid short-circuiting the transformer terminals.
- Use proper insulation and ensure the transformer is earthed.
- Never operate a transformer with excessive load, as it may overheat.
Conclusion
Transformers play a crucial role in electrical power systems. By changing
voltage levels efficiently, they enable power transmission over long
distances with minimal losses. This project has helped me understand the
construction, working, and importance of transformers in our daily lives.
