Power BI can be split into 3 parts:
1. Power BI Desktop – desktop application
2. Power BI Service – online SaaS
3. Power BI Apps – on Windows phones/tablets, iOS, Android

DATA – Getting Data
Power BI allows user to connect to multiple data from different platforms
DATA – Sources (4 Groups)
https://fluentpro.com/
DATA – Cleaning Datasets
Visualizations will be disabled if there are errors (eg. #N/A recognised as
error)
Possible solutions using queries:
Replace Errors: Replace all errors with specific values
Remove Errors: Delete rows of data that contains error
*If required, validation process to be placed here
DATA – Query Editor
Cleaning data – either to data source or thru query editor
Query – Set of instructions for PBI to clean and manipulate datasets every
time data is loaded (time saving/ accurate)
DATA – Manipulating Data sets
Replace values
DATA – Manipulating Data sets
Conditional Column
DATA – Useful Queries
Replace Values (similar to Find & Replace in Excel)
Replace Error
Remove Duplicates
Fill (Down/Up)
Remove/Add columns
Remove rows
Conditional columns
Extract (Similar to MID, RIGHT, LEFT and TextToColumn in Excel)
Transform (Uppercase, lowercase, trim and/or capitalize each word)
Filter & Text Filtering (Similar to Excel)
Sort
DATA – Relationships
Power BI auto detects relationships between data sets -> to make sense of
your data.
If no relationships are detected, relationships can still be created under these
conditions:
1. Many to One: This means the column in one table can have more than one
instance of a value, and the other related table, often know as the Lookup
table, has only one instance of a value.
2. One to One: This means the column in one table has only one instance of a
particular value, and the other related table has only one instance of a
particular value.
VISUALIZATION - Intro
Core of PBI – data visualization
Visuals are the end-result of any business intelligence undertaking => we want
to take data, present it in a compelling and insightful way, and show what
stands out.
Types of visuals (Inbuilt):
VISUALIZATION – Intro 2
Types of visuals : Types of visuals (PBI store): created
Power BI creates a placeholder on the by community
canvas to host your visual, and then
presents an script editor for you to use
right on the canvas
VISUALIZATION – Creating
Fields dependent on visualizations
If multiple measures can be added
into 1 field -> drill down
Drag & drop measures into respective
areas
Filters – used to filter away
unwanted data either in particular
visualization or whole report
VISUALIZATION – Formatting
Areas which you can format is also
dependent on visualizations
Some visualizations allow full
customization/ some don’t
Conditional Formatting can only be
done for certain visualizations
VISUALIZATION – Analytics
Creating reference lines in your bar
charts
Constant line
Min
Max
Average
Median
Percentile
VISUALIZATION – Navigation
VISUALIZATION – Interaction
When you have multiple visualizations on the same report page, selecting a
particular segment by clicking or using a slicer will affect all the visuals on
that page (transparency effect)
REPORT
Report is made up of compilation of visualizations
Tends to be more detailed in nature and more for day to day operational type
activities – working file
Visualizations can be edited/ drilled
REPORT – Measures & Columns
Measures – new calculation of datasets (only for values)
Columns – inserts new columns either based on calculation or other formula
(can be used for different types of data)
Measures and columns uses DAX formulas (similar to EXCEL formulas)
REPORT – Groups
Groups – Allows user to group items together
E.g.: Grouping Malaysia/Singapore/GDMA/Vietnam data together to form a
new group MSGV
REPORT – Creating Groups
REPORT – Refreshing/ Publishing
To view latest data in report, data source has to be updated before report in
Power BI.
To share and view content online, reports has to be published to PBI portal
Single report can be published to multiple different workspace
DASHBOARD
Dashboards can be a compilation of visualizations or reports
Gives a high level view of something specific that you want to monitor
Visualizations cannot be edited/ drilled
DASHBOARD - Creation
Created by pinning visualizations and/or reports onto the new or existing
dashboards
DASHBOARD – Refreshing/ Sharing
Refreshed automatically once reports are
updated (owners has published their report)
For sharing, go to the desired dashboard
and select “Share”
Invitees will be allowed to read the
dashboard and, if access is granted, share
the same dashboard to other users
APPS
App workspace : working group to create/edit App
App: evolution of organizational content packs
Advantage of using App versus sharing of dashboard
Managing multiple content
Managing users access
Option 1: All business users
need Power BI Pro licenses to view
your app.
Option 2: Free users in your
organization can view app content if
your app resides in a Power BI
Premium capacity.
