SORDID GAIN: QUESTIONABLE VOCATIONS

Proverbs 1:10-19, Proverbs 16:8, 1 Timothy 6:6:10-14

Overview
The Bible recommends that elders of the church must not be greedy for money (1Tim. 3:2-3),
and Ezekiel condemned dishonest gain (Ezek. 22:12-13). This lesson seeks to guide the young
adult to examine the meaning of dishonest gain and safeguard them against the engagement of
questionable enterprises.

Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, participants should be able to;
1. Explain questionable vocations,
2. Give biblical consequences of sordid gain.
3. Identify questionable careers and avoid them.

Content Exposition
Sordid means dirty, bad, or dishonest. It can describe something physically unclean or morally
wrong.
Sordid gain refers to money or benefits obtained through dishonest, immoral, or unethical means.
It often implies corruption, fraud, exploitation, or other corrupt practices.
Dishonest – Not truthful; lying or cheating to gain something.
Immoral – Going against good behavior or what is right.
Unethical – Not following rules or principles of fairness and honesty.
In other words, one could be in God-approved career but still make sordid gains.

Questionable vocations denote those careers that tend to downplay human dignity for selfish
gains.
Questionable careers dehumanize our personality. These careers are secretive and punishable by
Law.
Some of them are as follows:

✔Prostitution - offering sexual intercourse for a fee/pay.

✓Drug trafficking - trading in illicit/ harmful drugs like cocaine, Indian hemp, etc.

✓Human trafficking - selling of human beings to an available market for any


reason.

Usury - lending at an exorbitant interest.

Armed robbery - robbing at gun point.

Fraud - internet fraud, 419, etc.

✔ Pornography - showing a naked body/ live sex for a feelpay

What does the Bible say about Sordid and Questionable Vocation

1. Dishonest gains/questionable vocations can rake away person's life. (Proverbs


1:19, 21:6)

2. God takes gains from such work for the righteous. (Proverbs 28:8)

3. It leads to poverty. (Proverbs 22:16, Proverbs 13:11)

4. It is folly because it eventually leads to poverty (Jeremiah 17:11)

5. It attracts curses. (Habakkuk 2:9)

6. You trouble your family. (Proverbs 15:27)

7. You will miss heaven. (1 Tim 6:10)

8. It may be sweet initially but may lead to sorrow. (Proverbs 20:17, 1 Tim 6:10)

2. What should Christians who have doubts about the Christian integrity of their
occupations do?

Conclusion
As people recruited into building the Kingdom of God, with the promise that "all
other things shall be added" unto us, we must ensure that whatever we do for a living
also contributes to our mission. Our businesses must not cast doubts on our
understanding of God's calling and our separation from sin.
