Church Officer Training Policy
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all church officers are effectively equipped to
carry out their roles in accordance with the teachings of the Bible, the Seventh-day
Adventist Church Manual, and the mission of the church. Training ensures that officers are
spiritually mature, administratively competent, and aligned with church governance, allowing
them to serve faithfully and effectively in their respective positions.
1. General Principles
• Training is foundational to church leadership. Officers must receive ongoing training
in theological, ethical, spiritual, and operational areas to lead in a manner that reflects
Christ's character.
• Officers must demonstrate a commitment to biblical principles, uphold church
policies, and promote the spiritual and operational health of the congregation.
2. Initial Training and Orientation
• Purpose: All new officers will undergo orientation to understand their roles and the
expectations of church leadership.
• Content:
o Overview of the Seventh-day Adventist Church Manual, focusing on the
expectations and responsibilities for each position.
o Theological Training: Study of SDA doctrines, the Bible, and the writings of
Ellen G. White, with particular focus on the officer’s role in spiritual
leadership.
o Role-Specific Duties: Each officer will be trained on the practical aspects of
their responsibilities, which may include financial management, ministry
planning, conducting meetings, and pastoral care.
• Duration: Orientation will last for at least one full day or several sessions over a span
of two weeks, depending on the availability of officers.
3. Ongoing Training and Development
• Regular Workshops: Quarterly workshops will be organized to review key concepts,
foster spiritual growth, and address current church needs.
• Mentorship: Each officer will be paired with an experienced leader who will provide
guidance, encouragement, and advice, especially during the first year in office.
• Continuous Learning: Officers will be encouraged to attend relevant conferences,
online seminars, and self-directed study to stay informed on best practices and church
governance.
• Evaluation: Officers will receive an annual performance evaluation, where they can
assess their own development, reflect on challenges, and receive constructive
feedback from the Pastor and First Elder.
4. Job Descriptions
• Clarity of Roles: A written job description will be provided for each officer. The
description will outline the specific spiritual, administrative, and operational duties
expected of them, with clear references to the SDA Church Manual.
o Spiritual Responsibilities: Leading by example in prayer, Bible study, and
personal holiness (1 Peter 5:2-3).
o Administrative Duties: Efficient management of church resources, personnel,
and activities (1 Corinthians 14:40).
o Collaborative Leadership: Working effectively with the congregation,
elders, and other ministry leaders to fulfill the church’s mission (Ecclesiastes
4:9-10).
• Annual Review: Job descriptions will be reviewed annually by the Church Board to
ensure they remain current and relevant.
5. Discipleship and Spiritual Formation
• Officers will participate in regular spiritual development activities, such as personal
devotions, group Bible studies, and prayer sessions, to cultivate a servant-leader
mindset.
• Accountability: Officers will be encouraged to engage in mutual accountability with
fellow officers, ensuring that their personal spiritual growth is aligned with their
professional duties (Galatians 6:1-2).
6. Consequences for Non-Compliance
Failure to uphold the responsibilities outlined in the job descriptions or failure to meet the
expectations of spiritual leadership will result in the following steps:
• Counseling and Support: If issues arise, the officer will receive personal counseling
from the Pastor or First Elder to help them address challenges.
• Follow-up: If the issues persist, further evaluations will be conducted, and additional
training or corrective actions may be taken.
• Reassignment or Dismissal: Continued failure to comply with the requirements of
the office may result in reassignment or dismissal, subject to approval by the Church
Board and Elders' Council (1 Timothy 3:8-13).
7. Review and Feedback
• Annual Review: The church officer training policy will be reviewed annually by the
Church Board and Elders’ Council to ensure it is meeting the needs of the church and
officers.
• Feedback from Officers: Officers will have the opportunity to provide feedback on
the training program to improve its effectiveness and address any concerns.
8. Scripture References
• 1 Timothy 3:1-13: Describes the qualities and responsibilities of church leaders.
• 1 Peter 5:2-3: Encourages leaders to be willing, humble, and examples to the flock.
• Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: Emphasizes the importance of teamwork and mutual support in
leadership.

This policy is designed to ensure that officers are equipped with the necessary tools and
spiritual foundation to serve effectively. By investing in comprehensive training, the church
ensures that leaders are prepared to shepherd the congregation in both spiritual and practical
matters, advancing the mission of the church while maintaining unity and integrity in
leadership.
