Assignment 1 Solution

The document discusses various sampling techniques used in farm management research, including simple random sampling, systematic random sampling, and stratified random sampling. It provides examples of calculating sample sizes and selecting samples from populations of farmers and livestock across different agroecological zones in Bangladesh. The conclusions highlight the distribution of laborers and the selection of samples based on population demographics.

Problem 1

Let's draw a sample size of 2 from a population of size 6 having

elements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Find out the probable samples if we

apply lottery method of simple random sampling technique.

Solution 1
Given that,

Population size, N = 6

Sample size, n = 2
By applying lottery method of simple random sampling technique,

Ncn = 6c2

= 15
Again, Elements of population are given 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

So, the probable samples are: (1,2), (1,3), (1,4), (1,5), (1,6), (2,3), (2,4), (2,5), (2,6), (3,4),
(3,5), (3,6), (4,5), (4,6), (5,6).
Problem 2

What will be the probable samples if we want to draw 15

small farmers from 90 small farmers in a village by applying

systematic random sampling technique in order to reveal the

socioeconomic conditions of them in the area?

Solution 2
Given that,

Population size, N = 90

Sample size, n = 15

𝑁 90
So, Sampling interval, K = = =6
𝑛 15

By applying systematic random sampling technique in order to reveal the socioeconomic

condition of the small farmers in the area, the probable samples are given below:

If comes 1, then the probable samples will be: 1, 7, 13, 19, 25, 31, 37, 43, 49, 55, 61, 67, 73,
79, 85.
Solution 2
If comes 2, then the probable samples will be: 2, 8, 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56, 62, 68,
74, 80, 86.

If comes 3, then the probable samples will be : 3, 9, 15, 21, 27, 33, 39, 45, 51, 57, 63, 69,
75, 81, 87.

If comes 4, then the probable samples will be : 4, 10, 16, 22, 28, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58, 64, 70,
76, 82, 88.

If comes 5, then the probable samples will be : 5, 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41, 47, 53, 59, 65, 71,
77, 83, 89.

If comes 6, then the probable samples will be : 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72,
78, 84, 90.

homogeneity characteristics of the variables.

b) i) Proportionate stratified random sampling technique should be followed.

ii) Given that, A total of 60 VRM, 30 MRM, 600 male wage earners from VRM,

Conclusions
• From the table, we found a detailed breakdown of sample size
calculations by location, focusing on population demographics and
labour distribution across Village Rice Mills (VRMs) and Mobile Rice
Mills (MRMs) in Gopalpur and Parbotipur areas of Bangladesh.
• To get a total of 60 VRMs, from Gopalpur 26 VRMs and Parbotipur 34
VRMs has been selected proportionately, indicating a higher
concentration of VRMs in Parbotipur.
• To get a total of 30 MRMs, from Gopalpur 18 MRMs and Parbotipur
12 MRMs has been selected proportionately, indicating a higher
concentration of MRMs in Gopalpur.
Conclusions
• From VRMs, the sample selection reveals 238 labourers in Gopalpur
and 662 in Parbotipur, with 173 male and 65 female labourer in
Gopalpur, and 427 male and 235 female labourers in Parbotipur.

• From MRMs, the sample selection shows 138 labourers in Gopalpur

and 102 in Parbotipur, with 95 male and 43 female labourer in
Gopalpur, and 55 male and 47 female labourers in Parbotipur.

Solution 4

i) The most relevant sampling procedure for this study will be the
proportionate stratified random sampling procedure. Because from the
four (04) agroecological zones (AEZs) and three (03) species of farm
animals, we have to choose these data.

ii) Given that, the donor agency is interested to undertake an action

research plan of the species on 6,000 cattles, 12000 goats and 24000
chickens covering 18000 households in 4 agro ecological zones (AEZs)

Out of four (04) agroecological zones (AEZ’s) the highest number of
sample selected is 12232 from a number of 5883 sample houesholds,
which is found in AEZ-1 and the lowest number of sample selected is
7641 from a number of 3018 sample households, which is found in
AEZ-29.
