Q1: Consider the following statements, using elementary group theory and geometry show that
they are true,
(a) The Dn group has 2n elements and the number of classes is (n + 6)/2 is n is even and
(n + 3)/2 if n is odd.
(b) Prove the Euler’s polyhedra theorem V − E + F = 2 and the law of rational indices. Using
them construct the possible solutions (Platonic solids).

Q2: Write down the Sylow theorems and their proofs.

Q3: Write down the on-dimensional and two-dimensional (upto equivalence) representations
for the following groups,
(a) The Dihedral groups D2 , D3 , D4 , Dn
(b) The cyclic groups C2 , C3 , Cn
(c) The Alternating groups (also the group of even permutations) A4 , An

Q4: Show that a representation D(g) is irreducible, if, and only if,

χ(g)∗ χ(g) = 1,
where χ(g) is the character of D(g). Suppose χ(g)∗ χ(g) = 2 what does it say about the group.

Q5: Write down the character table for S3 and A4 .
