Week 2 Tutorial Problems

Thermodynamics: Introduction, 1st Law, & Thermodynamic Properties

1. (Cengel, Thermo 5– 5) Air enters a 16-cm-diameter pipe steadily at 200 kPa and 20°C with a velocity
of 5 m/s. Air is heated as it flows, and it leaves the pipe at 180 kPa and 40°C. Determine ( a ) the
volume flow rate of air at the inlet, ( b ) the mass flow rate of air, and ( c ) the velocity and volume
flow rate at the exit. [Answers: a) 0.1005 m3/s, b) 0.2391 kg/s, c) 5.935 m/s]

2. (Cengel, Thermo 4-6) A piston– cylinder device with a set of stops initially contains 0.6 kg of steam at
1.0 MPa and 400°C. The location of the stops corresponds to 40 percent of the initial volume. Now the
steam is cooled. Determine the compression work if the final state is: (a) 1.0 MPa and 250°C and (b) 500
kPa. (c) Also determine the temperature at the final state in part b.
[Answers: a) 44.3 kJ, b) 110.4 kJ, c) 151.8 oC ]

3. (Cengel, Thermo 4– 66) Air is contained in a variable-load piston– cylinder device equipped with a
paddle wheel. Initially, air is at 400 kPa and 17°C. The paddle wheel is now turned by an external
electric motor until 75 kJ/kg of work has been transferred to air. During this process, heat is
transferred to maintain a constant air temperature while allowing the gas volume to triple. Calculate
the required amount of heat transfer, in kJ/kg. [Answer: 16.4 kJ/kg]

4. (2021 Final Exam, Energy Balance, 1st Law of Thermodynamics): An adiabatic air compressor is to be
powered by a direct-coupled adiabatic steam turbine that is also driving a generator. Steam enters

the turbine at 15 MPa and 520°C at a rate of 25 kg/s and exits at 10 kPa and a quality of 0.90. Air
enters the compressor at 101 kPa and 298 K at a rate of 10 kg/s and exits at 1 MPa and 600 K.
Determine the net power delivered to the generator by the turbine. Please assume constant Cp for
air. Cp = 1.005 kJ/kg-K. -> Worked Example

5. (Cengel, Thermo 5– 27) The diffuser in a jet engine is designed to decrease the kinetic energy of the
air entering the engine compressor without any work or heat interactions. Calculate the velocity at
the exit of a diffuser when air at 100 kPa and 30°C enters it with a velocity of 350 m/s and the exit
state is 200 kPa and 90°C. [Answers: 40.7 m/s]
