Period 1
1. Heat exhaustion is when you cannot compete anymore due to exhaustion or lack of
energy from the heat. It occurs when the athlete has a body temperature of 97 to 104
Farenheit. Symptoms include: Dizziness, Hyperventilation, Headache, and Nausea. To
treat heat exhaustion, put the athlete in a cool place, remove excess clothing, and give
fluids and cool their body down with fans, ice packs, and wet towels. Heat illness is when
the athlete’s body overheats from lack of hydration and hot weather, and the overheating
causes the athlete’s vital organs to start shutting down. You can prevent heat illness by
getting adequate hydration, and building up your training. Heat stroke is when the athlete
loses consciousness from the heat and a high body temperature which they cannot
control. This only happens when their body reaches a core temperature of 107 Farenheit
or higher. Symptoms include: Dizziness, Drowsiness, Hyperventilation, Disorientation,
and Hot, wet, or dry skin.
2. They cannot practice during times where there is a high temperature
3. Some coaches do not agree with this, because at certain locations the temperature is a
constant high, so they do not get to practice as much as the teams that have cooler
locations.
