1. Explain CPU instruc on cycle

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) instruc on cycle, also known as the fetch-execute cycle, is the basic opera on cycle of
a computer's central processing unit. It consists of a series of steps that the CPU performs to execute a single machine
language instruc on. The cycle typically involves fetching an instruc on from memory, decoding it, execu ng the
opera on, and storing the result. The main steps in the CPU instruc on cycle are as follows:

1. Fetch:

 The CPU fetches the next instruc on from the memory. The program counter (PC) holds the address of
the next instruc on to be fetched.

2. Decode:

 The fetched instruc on is decoded to determine what opera on needs to be performed. This involves
interpre ng the opcode (opera on code) of the instruc on.

3. Execute:

 The CPU performs the actual opera on or instruc on indicated by the decoded opcode. This may
involve arithme c or logical opera ons, data movement, or control transfer.

4. Store (Write Back):

 If the instruc on involves storing the result in memory or in a register, the CPU writes the result back to
the specified loca on.

5. Update Program Counter:

 The program counter is updated to point to the next instruc on in sequence, preparing the CPU for the
next cycle.

These steps repeat for each instruc on in the program, crea ng a con nuous cycle of fetch, decode, execute, and store.
The execu on of instruc ons in this cycle is the fundamental process that allows a computer to carry out the opera ons
specified by a program.

The efficiency and speed of the CPU instruc on cycle play a crucial role in determining the overall performance of a
computer system. Modern CPUs o en use pipelining and other techniques to overlap the execu on of mul ple
instruc ons, improving throughput and ensuring that the CPU is kept busy during each cycle.

2. Explain hardwired control unit.

A hardwired control unit is a type of control unit within a computer's central processing unit (CPU) that is implemented
using dedicated, fixed logic circuits. In contrast to a microprogrammed control unit, which uses stored control sequences
in memory, a hardwired control unit's control signals are directly generated by combina onal logic circuits. The term
"hardwired" implies that the control signals and sequences are permanently embedded in the circuitry during the design
phase.

Key characteris cs of a hardwired control unit include:

1. Fixed Logic Circuits:

 Control signals and the sequencing of opera ons are determined during the design of the CPU and are
implemented using fixed logic circuits, such as gates, flip-flops, and other combina onal and sequen al
logic elements.

3. Explain micro-programmed control unit.

A microprogrammed control unit is a type of control unit within a computer's central processing unit (CPU) that uses a
set of microinstruc ons stored in memory to generate control signals. Unlike a hardwired control unit, where control
signals are directly implemented in hardware circuits, a microprogrammed control unit interprets a set of instruc ons
stored in memory to determine the sequence of control signals. This approach provides more flexibility in terms of
modifying the control unit's behaviour without altering the hardware.

4. Flexibility:

 Microprogrammed control units are more flexible than hardwired control units. Modifica ons or

4. Explain signed integer representa on

Signed integer representa on is a method of represen ng both posi ve and nega ve integers in a computer's memory.
There are various ways to represent signed integers, but two common methods are Sign and Magnitude and Two's
Complement.

1. Sign and Magnitude:

 In the sign and magnitude representa on, one bit is used to represent the sign of the integer (0 for
posi ve, 1 for nega ve), and the remaining bits represent the magnitude (absolute value) of the integer.

 For example:

 +5 is represented as 0101

 −5 is represented as 1101(sign bit is 1, magnitude is 5)

2. Two's Complement:

 Two's complement is a widely used method for represen ng signed integers in computers. It simplifies
addi on and subtrac on opera ons.

 To represent a posi ve integer, use its binary representa on.


 To represent a nega ve integer, find the two's complement of its posi ve counterpart.

 Find the binary representa on of the posi ve integer.

 Invert all the bits (change 0s to 1s and 1s to 0s).

 Add 1 to the inverted binary number.

 Example:

 +5 in binary: 0101

 −5 in two's complement: 1011

3. Range of Representable Numbers:

 The range of representable numbers depends on the number of bits used. For an n-bit representa on:

 Sign and Magnitude: 2n-1−1 to −(2n-1−1)

 Two's Complement: −(2n-1−1) to 2n-1-1

4. Most Significant Bit (MSB):

 In both representa ons, the le most bit (most significant bit) is the sign bit. It determines whether the
number is posi ve or nega ve.

5. Advantages of Two's Complement:

 Simplifies addi on and subtrac on opera ons.

 There is only one representa on for zero.

 Range of representable numbers is symmetric around zero.

1. Explain working and importance of DMA.

DMA (Direct Memory Access) is a feature found in computer systems that allows peripherals or devices to access the
system's memory directly without involving the CPU (Central Processing Unit). This is a cri cal component of computer
architecture that enhances system performance and efficiency. Let's explore how DMA works and its importance:

Working of DMA:

1. Normal Data Transfer: In a typical data transfer opera on, when a peripheral device (e.g., hard drive, network
card, sound card, or GPU) wants to read from or write to system memory, it would tradi onally communicate
with the CPU. The CPU would then execute instruc ons to move the data, which involves reading from one
loca on in memory and wri ng to another. This process consumes CPU cycles and can slow down overall system
performance.

2. DMA Ini a on: DMA is designed to offload this burden from the CPU. When a peripheral device needs to
transfer data, it sends a request to the DMA controller. The DMA controller is a dedicated hardware component
that manages data transfers between devices and memory.

3. DMA Configura on: The DMA controller is configured with specific parameters such as the source and
des na on memory addresses, the amount of data to be transferred, and the transfer direc on (read or write).
The CPU sets up these parameters and ini ates the DMA transfer.

4. Data Transfer: Once configured, the DMA controller takes control of the data transfer. It communicates directly
with the memory subsystem and the peripheral device, transferring data between them without CPU
interven on.

5. Comple on: A er the data transfer is completed, the DMA controller generates an interrupt to no fy the CPU of
the comple on status, allowing the CPU to take any necessary ac on or process the transferred data.

Importance of DMA:

2. What is asynchronous data transfer? How is it achieved using strobe and hand-shacking methods?

Asynchronous data transfer enables computers to send and receive data without having to wait for a real- me response.
With this technique, data is conveyed in discrete units known as packets that may be handled separately.

 Strobe Control Method for Data Transfer: Strobe control is a method used in asynchronous data transfer that
synchronizes data flow between two devices. Bits are transmi ed one at a me, independently of one another, and
without the aid of a clock signal in asynchronous communica on. To properly receive the data, the receiving equipment
needs to be able to synchronize with the transmi ng device. Strobe control involves sending data along with a different
signal known as the strobe signal. The strobe signal alerts the receiving device that the data is valid and ready to be read.
The receiving device waits for the strobe signal before reading the data to ensure sure it is synchronized with its clock.

 Handshaking Method for Data Transfer: During an asynchronous data transfer, two devices manage their
communica on using handshaking. It is guaranteed that the transmi ng and receiving devices are prepared to send and
receive data. Handshakes are essen al in asynchronous communica on since there is no clock signal to synchronize the
data transfer. During handshaking, we use two types of signals mostly they are request-to-send (RTS) and clear-to-send
(CTS). The receiving device is no fied by an RTS signal when the transmi ng equipment is ready to provide data. The
receiving device responds with a CTS signal when it is ready to accept data. once data is transmi ed to the receiver end.
the receiver generates a signal that it has done by sending an acknowledgment (ACK) signal. If the data is not
successfully received, the receiving device will no fy that a new transmission is necessary via a nega ve
acknowledgment (NAK) signal.

3. Short note on PCI, SCSI, USB Bus.

PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect): PCI is a computer bus standard that connects various hardware devices to
the motherboard. It was ini ally developed by Intel and has become a widely adopted interface for connec ng
expansion cards, such as graphics cards, network cards, and storage controllers, to the central processing unit (CPU) and
memory. PCI provides a high-speed data path between these devices and the CPU, allowing for efficient communica on
and data transfer.

SCSI (Small Computer System Interface): SCSI is a set of standards for connec ng and transferring data between
computers and peripheral devices. Originally designed for connec ng hard drives and other storage devices, SCSI has
evolved to support a variety of peripherals, including scanners, printers, and CD-ROM drives. SCSI supports daisy-
chaining mul ple devices on a single bus, providing versa lity in system configura ons. It has been widely used in
enterprise environments due to its reliability and performance.

USB (Universal Serial Bus): USB is a widely adopted standard for connec ng and powering devices. It was designed to
provide a simple, standardized connec on for various peripherals, including keyboards, mice, printers, cameras, and
storage devices. USB supports hot-swapping, allowing devices to be connected or disconnected without restar ng the
computer. It has undergone several itera ons, with each version offering improvements in data transfer rates and power
delivery. USB has become a ubiquitous interface in modern compu ng due to its ease of use and versa lity.

4. Short note on I/O processor.

An I/O (Input/Output) processor is a specialized processor or controller dedicated to managing the communica on and
data transfer between a computer's central processing unit (CPU) and its peripheral devices. Its primary func on is to
offload I/O tasks from the CPU, allowing the CPU to focus on computa on and other cri cal func ons. Here are key
points about I/O processors:

1. Task Offloading: The I/O processor takes on the responsibility of handling communica on with external devices,
such as storage devices, network interfaces, and input/output devices, relieving the main CPU from managing
these tasks directly.

2. Efficiency Improvement: By delega ng I/O opera ons to a dedicated processor, the main CPU can con nue
execu ng instruc ons and processing data without wai ng for slower I/O opera ons to complete. This improves
overall system efficiency and responsiveness.

3. Parallel Processing: I/O processors o en operate in parallel with the CPU, allowing for concurrent execu on of
I/O tasks and computa onal tasks. This parallelism enhances the system's throughput and performance.
4. Data Buffering and Caching: I/O processors commonly incorporate buffers or caches to temporarily store data

5. Short note on input output techniques:- memory mapped I/O and I/O mapped I/O.

1. Memory-Mapped I/O:

 In Memory-Mapped I/O, the memory address space is shared between the CPU and peripheral
devices.

 Peripheral devices are assigned specific addresses within the memory address space, and
reading/wri ng to these addresses triggers communica on with the corresponding peripherals.

 Advantages:

 Simplifies programming: Since I/O devices are treated like memory loca ons, programmers can
use standard load and store instruc ons to access them.

 Consistency: Uniform access mechanisms for both memory and I/O devices.

 Memory protec on: Memory protec on mechanisms can be applied to I/O regions.

 Disadvantages:

 Limited address space: The memory address space may become crowded with both actual
memory and I/O devices.

 Lack of specialized instruc ons: No dedicated I/O instruc ons; all communica on goes through
standard memory access instruc ons.

2. I/O Mapped I/O:

 In I/O Mapped I/O, a separate address space is used for I/O devices dis nct from the memory
address space.

 Special I/O instruc ons are employed to interact with the I/O devices, separate from regular
memory opera ons.

 Advantages:

 Dedicated instruc ons: Specific I/O instruc ons (IN and OUT) are used for I/O opera ons,
making it clear when data is being transferred to or from a peripheral device.

 Address space separa on: The I/O address space is dis nct from the memory address space,
preven ng conflicts.

 Disadvantages:
 Requires dedicated instruc ons: Programmers need to use special I/O instruc ons, which might
complicate programming compared to Memory-Mapped I/O.

 Increased complexity: Handling separate address spaces may require addi onal hardware
support and so ware complexity.

1. Structure of Cache Memory

Cache memory is a small-sized type of vola le computer memory that provides high-speed data access to a processor
and stores frequently used computer programs, applica ons, and data. The structure of cache memory typically involves
several levels, with each level serving a specific purpose in the memory hierarchy.

1. Cache Levels:

 L1 Cache: This is the first level of cache, o en located directly on the processor chip. L1 cache is small
but very fast, providing quick access to frequently used data and instruc ons.

 L2 Cache: Located outside the processor core but s ll on the same chip, L2 cache is larger than L1 and
provides addi onal storage for frequently accessed data. Some processors have a unified L2 cache
shared among mul ple cores, while others have separate L2 caches for each core.

 L3 Cache: In mul -core processors, there is o en a shared L3 cache that serves all processor cores. L3
cache is larger than L1 and L2 and helps improve data sharing among cores.

2. Mapping:

 Cache mapping refers to how cache lines are mapped to specific loca ons in the cache. There are three
common types of mapping: direct-mapped, set-associa ve, and fully associa ve.

 Direct-Mapped: Each block of main memory maps to exactly one cache line. This mapping is
simple but can lead to conflicts.

 Set-Associa ve: Each block of main memory can map to a set of cache lines. The set-associa ve
mapping provides a balance between simplicity and flexibility.

 Fully Associa ve: Each block of main memory can map to any cache line in the cache. This
mapping is the most flexible but requires more complex hardware.

3. Cache Size:

 The size of the cache memory is a cri cal factor in its performance. Larger caches can store more data
but may have longer access mes. The size is typically measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), or
gigabytes (GB).

4. Replacement Policies:

 When a cache line needs to be replaced (due to a cache miss), a replacement policy determines which
line is evicted. Common replacement policies include LRU (Least Recently Used), FIFO (First-In, First-
Out), and random replacement.

2. Short note on Cache Mapping

1. Direct-Mapped Cache:

 In a direct-mapped cache, each block of main memory is mapped to exactly one specific cache line. The
mapping is done using a modulo opera on on the memory address.

 This mapping is simple and requires minimal hardware, making it cost-effec ve.

 However, direct-mapped caches are prone to conflicts since mul ple memory blocks may map to the
same cache line, leading to cache collisions.

2. Set-Associa ve Cache:
 Set-associa ve mapping provides a compromise between the simplicity of direct-mapped and the
flexibility of fully associa ve mapping.

 In a set-associa ve cache, each block of main memory can map to a set of cache lines (a small group of
lines). The mapping is determined using a set index derived from the memory address.

 The number of lines in a set is known as the associa vity. Common associa vity values include 2-way, 4-
way, or 8-way set-associa ve caches.

 Set-associa ve caches reduce the conflicts compared to direct-mapped caches and offer more flexibility
in managing cache entries.

3. Fully Associa ve Cache:

 In a fully associa ve cache, each block of main memory can map to any cache line in the en re cache.

 This provides the highest flexibility and minimizes conflicts since any memory block can be placed in any
cache loca on.

 However, fully associa ve mapping requires more complex hardware to search the en re cache for a
specific memory block, making it more expensive and slower than direct-mapped or set-associa ve
caches.

3. How can we improve the performance of Cache Memory?

Improving the performance of cache memory involves op mizing various aspects of the cache system to enhance data
access mes, reduce cache misses, and overall improve the efficiency of the memory hierarchy. Here are several

 Higher associa vity, such as increasing from 2-way to 4-way or 8-way set-associa ve caches, can reduce
cache conflicts and improve the cache's ability to store diverse data sets.

3. Use Mul ple Cache Levels:

 Implemen ng mul ple cache levels (L1, L2, and some mes L3) allows for a hierarchical structure with
each level serving a specific purpose. Smaller, faster caches (L1) can capture frequently used data, while
larger caches (L2, L3) provide addi onal storage.

4. Improve Replacement Policies:

 The replacement policy determines which cache line is evicted when a cache miss occurs. More
sophis cated policies, such as Least Recently Used (LRU), can improve cache performance by retaining
more relevant data.

2. Increased Processing Power: The primary advantage of mul processor systems is their increased processing power.
By adding more processors, tasks can be divided and executed concurrently, allowing for faster and more efficient

3. Scalability: Mul processor systems can be designed with different numbers of processors, making them highly
scalable. This means that the number of CPUs can be increased or decreased based on the performance requirements of
the system.

4. Shared Memory and Resources: Mul processors typically share common memory and resources, such as
input/output devices, system buses, and peripherals. This shared architecture enables efficient communica on and data
sharing among the processors.

5. Symmetric Mul processing (SMP): In SMP systems, each processor has equal access to the system's memory and
resources. This symmetric design simplifies the management of processes and load balancing, making it easier to write
