Graphing Quadratic function .
The General formula of the quadratic function is f(x) = ax2 + bx + c
Key points :
1. Coefficients
● a , b and c are constants (real constants )
● “a” is a non- zero constant (if a = 0 , the function becomes linear ,
not quadratic )
2. Graph :
● The graph of linear function is a parabola
● If a > 0 , the parabola opens upward and has a minimum point .
● If a < 0 , the parabola opens downward and has a maximum point.
The parts of parabola :
3. Vertex is defined as the minimum or maximum point of the parabola .
4. Axis of symmetry is the vertical line that divides the parabola into two
equal parts .
5. x - intercepts are the point where the graph passes through the x - axis .
6. y - intercept is the point where the graph passes through y - axis .
Steps for graphing a quadratic function :
1) Construct a table that is involve at least 5 conductive points of x
2) Evaluate the corresponding f(x) for each x - value in the table
3) Plot the setpoint and connect them with a smooth line .
Example : graph f(x) = x2
● Construct a table and evaluate the values of f(x) .
X -2 -1 0 1 2
f(x) (-2)2 = 4 (-1)2=1 (0)2 = 0 (1)2 (2)2
● Plot the point

C) p(x) = –2x2 – 1
D)y(x) = x2 + 2
E) f(x) = 2 - x2
