Diwali means ‘rows of lighted lamps’ and is often commonly referred to
as the 'Festival of Lights' because of the tradition of oil lamps that
people use to light houses, shops and public places.

days. It is a happy holiday that is celebrated with good food, fireworks
and special candles. During this festival, families light up earthenware
oil lamps called 'Diyas' outside their homes. Diwali is celebrated every
year and marks the beginning of the New Year in India. Some years this
festival is celebrated in October, other years it is in November.

Diwali is as important holiday for Hindus as Christmas is for Christians.
Diwali celebrates the inner light that protects us from darkness. It is a
festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil, knowledge over
ignorance and that light triumphs over darkness.

you are in India. The most common legends are -
1. The return of Lord Rama, along with his wife, Sita and brother,
Lakshmana, from his fourteen-year-long exile and vanquishing the
demon-king Ravana.

2. The Victory of Lord Krishna over the demon king Narakasur


3. Women and Children create designs or special patterns on the
floor of their homes called 'Rangoli'. The most popular subject of
Rangoli is Lotus flower. People believe that while they are asleep,
Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth and abundance, will visit
their homes and bring them good luck and prosperity.
