The Memories of Childhood

My childhood was filled with laughter and games,

Hide and seek, where we’d call out names.
Running through streets with joy in our eyes,
Chasing each other beneath the clear skies.

Catch-catch was our favourite, no end in sight,

We’d run ll we couldn’t, all through the night.
The thrill of playing, the joy of the chase,
A me when fun had no me or place.

Then came the cartoons, our daily delight,

Adventures of gadgets and pranks felt right.
Their mischief and jokes, a constant cheer,
In their world of wonder, we’d disappear.

And of course, The King, our cricket star,

With every run he made, he took us far.
His passion for the game, so fierce and true,
We dreamt of being just like him too.

But as the years pass, those days fade away,

Yet in my heart, they s ll brightly stay.
The games, the shows, the stars we adored,
In the book of childhood, they are forever stored.

Cri cal Analysis of The Poem Childhood

Introduc on
The poem Childhood by Markus Na en reflects the moment a child
realizes that he or she is leaving the innocence and simplicity of
childhood behind. It explores a significant transi on in a person's life,
making the readers nostalgic about their lost innocence and curious
mind.

About The Poet

Markus Na en is a Norwegian poet known for his insigh ul
reflec ons on life. In Childhood, he focuses on the profound theme of
growing up, contempla ng when and how childhood ceases to exist.
The poet’s deep understanding of the complexi es of childhood gives
this poem a universal appeal.

Theme
The central theme of Childhood is the loss of innocence, curiosity,
and simplicity. The poet raises ques ons on
whether the loss of childhood is marked
by the acquiring of knowledge, hypocrisy's surfacing,
or realizing oneself as an individual. In any case, it will
highlight how once childhood is lost, it cannot be recovered.
Thus, it becomes very valuable.

5
Poe c Devices

 Imagery: Vivid descrip ons like “When did my childhood go?”

evoke a reflec ve and visual sense of lost innocence.
 Personifica on: The poet gives abstract ideas, like “hell and
heaven,” a life-like quality.
 Repe on: The phrase “Where did my childhood go?”
emphasizes the poet’s longing to iden fy the precise moment
of loss.
 Rhyme and Rhythm: The poem’s simple rhyme scheme and
steady rhythm mirror the simplicity of childhood itself.

Mood and Tone

The mood in the poem is reflec ve and somewhat nostalgic. The
poet takes a tone that changes from the curiosity to a wis ul
sadness upon recalling the inevitable loss of innocence. This shi
connects with the reader on a deep level by evoking their
own innocence and wonder.

Personal Reflec on
The poem resonates deeply with me, as it brings back memories of
my carefree childhood spent exploring, ques oning, and dreaming.
One specific memory I recall is my curiosity about sky, how it seemed
endless and mysterious. I even used to think of finding the reason for
its endlessness when I grow up. Like the poet, I now realize that
knowledge and responsibili es take away the dreams we dreamt of
living as.

6
Conclusion
The poem "Childhood" serves as a powerful reminder of how flee ng
yet significant this phase of life is. It illustrates that while we may not
fully recognize its worth in the moment, the innocence, curiosity, and
wonder of childhood are crucial in shaping our adult perspec ves.
These memories provide comfort and reflec on, bringing us back to a
me free from responsibili es and societal pressures. Markus
Na en’s poem highlights the unavoidable shi from childhood to
adulthood, promp ng us to treasure those simpler mes even more.
