ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my Social Science teacher for her continuous
guidance and support. I also thank my parents and friends who helped me in collecting data,
images and ideas for the successful completion of this project. I am thankful to Kendriya
Vidyalaya, Tirupati, for giving me this opportunity to explore such a useful and important topic.
This project helped me to learn and understand how we, as consumers, can protect our rights.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to make people aware of their rights as consumers and to
promote safe and informed shopping practices.
Aim: This project aims to educate students and the society about the importance of consumer
rights, responsibilities and the role of government in protecting them.

Methodology: The information has been gathered from newspapers, online resources, magazines
and various government portals. I also spoke to some local shopkeepers and consumers to
understand their awareness level.

Experience: Working on this project has been a very enriching and educational experience. I
learned about various symbols and certifications that ensure the quality of products and services.
It made me more aware and responsible as a buyer.

WHAT IS CONSUMER AWARENESS?

Consumer awareness refers to the knowledge a buyer should have about a product before buying
it. This includes understanding the product’s price, quality, safety, and guarantees. With growing
markets and new products every day, it has become more important for consumers to remain
alert and informed. Consumer awareness protects people from being cheated or misled by sellers.
For example, a person buying a food item must check the expiry date and ingredients to ensure
safety.

IMPORTANCE OF CONSUMER AWARENESS

Consumer awareness plays a major role in preventing consumer exploitation. It is necessary

because not all sellers are honest. Some of them may sell expired or defective goods. When a
consumer is aware, they can demand a bill, ask for guarantees, and file complaints when needed.
Awareness also promotes ethical trade practices. If consumers start rejecting low-quality or fake
products, sellers will be forced to improve their standards. It also ensures that consumers get full
value for their money.

CONSUMER RIGHTS

1. Right to Safety: Consumers have the right to be protected against products which are
harmful to health and life.
2. Right to be Informed: Consumers must be provided with correct information about the
product.
3. Right to Choose: Consumers should be able to select from a variety of goods and
services.
4. Right to be Heard: Consumers' interests should receive proper attention at appropriate
forums.
5. Right to Seek Redressal: Consumers have the right to receive compensation in case of
unfair practices.
6. Right to Consumer Education: Every consumer must be aware of their rights and
responsibilities.
7. Right to Basic Needs: Consumers should have access to basic goods and services.
8. Right to a Healthy Environment: Consumers have the right to live and work in a clean
environment.

CONSUMER RESPONSIBILITIES

Along with rights, consumers also have certain responsibilities. These include reading the label
carefully, checking the expiry date, asking for bills, and avoiding unnecessary purchases. A
responsible consumer promotes sustainability by avoiding wastage and choosing eco-friendly
products. It is also the consumer’s duty to report dishonest practices and help others become
aware. Consumer responsibility makes the market more honest and efficient for everyone.

ROLE OF GOVERNMENT AND LAWS

The government protects consumers through various laws like the Consumer Protection Act,
2019. This act ensures that consumer rights are protected and disputes are resolved quickly.
There are consumer forums and courts at district, state and national levels. Government agencies
like FSSAI, BIS and AGMARK help maintain quality standards. The “Jago Grahak Jago”
campaign is a great example of how the government spreads awareness among consumers. Strict
punishment is given to those who cheat or deceive consumers.

CASE STUDY: FAKE PRODUCT PURCHASE

In 2023, a man named Ramesh bought a branded mobile phone from a local shop. The product
was not sealed and lacked a warranty card. Within a week, the phone stopped working. The
seller refused to return or repair it. Ramesh approached the District Consumer Forum with proof.
After a short trial, the court ordered the seller to refund the money and pay a penalty. This case
shows how consumer rights can be used effectively to fight injustice.

COMMON CONSUMER PROBLEMS

 Expired or fake products

 False advertisement
 Defective goods
 Overpricing or no price tags
 No bill or warranty provided
 Poor after-sale services

To avoid these issues, consumers must be alert, check the product thoroughly, and always
demand a receipt. In case of cheating, the consumer can file a complaint online or at the
consumer court.

ART INTEGRATION: POSTERS AND LOGOS

[Attach drawings or paste pictures of the following:]

 Consumer awareness slogans

 “Jago Grahak Jago” campaign posters
 Logos of ISI, AGMARK, Hallmark, BIS
 A sample bill with GST number
 A comic strip showing a consumer asking for a bill

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

Summary: Consumer awareness means knowing the rights and responsibilities of being a buyer.
It helps people make better choices and fight against unfair trade practices.

Conclusion: A consumer who is informed is powerful. The more we know about our rights and
duties, the less likely we are to be cheated. Let us spread awareness and encourage others to
become smart buyers.
