Specification for Tile Flooring Installation
09 30 13 – Ceramic Tiling
I. Scope This specification covers the requirements for the installation of tile flooring,
including material selection, surface preparation, tile placement, and grout application to
ensure a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.
II. Materials
• Tiles: Porcelain or ceramic tiles, minimum thickness of 8mm, complying with ANSI
A137.1.
• Adhesive: Polymer-modified thin-set mortar conforming to ANSI A118.4.
• Grout: Cement-based or epoxy grout, meeting ANSI A118.6 or ANSI A118.3
standards.
• Underlayment: Cementitious backer board where required, complying with ASTM
C1325.
III. Execution
1. Surface Preparation:
o Ensure subfloor is clean, level, and dry before installation.
o Apply a primer if required to enhance adhesion.
o Install cement backer board if subfloor conditions necessitate it.
2. Tile Installation:
o Apply adhesive using a notched trowel to ensure proper bonding.
o Lay tiles in the specified pattern, maintaining uniform joint spacing.
o Use tile spacers for consistency and ensure tiles are properly aligned.
3. Grouting and Finishing:
o Allow adhesive to cure per manufacturer’s recommendations before applying
grout.
o Remove spacers and apply grout evenly using a rubber float.
o Wipe excess grout with a damp sponge and allow curing as per manufacturer’s
guidelines.
IV. Quality Control
• Inspect surface preparation before tile installation.
• Verify tile alignment and joint spacing during installation.
• Ensure grout is applied evenly without voids.
• Conduct final inspection for adhesion, leveling, and overall appearance.
This specification ensures high-quality tile flooring with durability, proper adhesion, and an
aesthetically pleasing finish.
