Lab 8 - Reaction of Acids

The document outlines a laboratory experiment aimed at observing the reactions of acids with metals, bases, and metal carbonates. It details the apparatus and materials needed, as well as the step-by-step procedure for conducting the reactions with magnesium, copper (II) oxide, and calcium carbonate. Observations and tests for hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide are included in the procedure.

Lab 8 – Reaction of Acids

Aim: To observe how acids react with: metals, bases (metal oxide) and metal carbonate

Apparatus: Bunsen burner, tripod stand, spatula, wire gauze, beakers, test tubes, delivery
tube, stirring rod

Materials: magnesium, dilute sulphuric acid, copper (II) oxide, calcium carbonate, dilute
hydrochloric acid, lime water

Procedure:

A. Acid and metal

1. A few pieces of magnesium metal was added to a test tube followed by 1
cm3 of dilute sulphuric acid (H2SO4)
2. Observations were made and the resulting hydrogen gas was tested for,
by placing a lighted splint in the mouth of the test tube, and the results
were recorded.
B. Acid and base
1. One spatula of copper (II) oxide was added to 3 cm3 of sulphuric acid
(HCl) in a beaker and heated.
2. Observations were made of the resulting mixture and recorded.
C. Acid and metal carbonate
1. One spatula of calcium carbonate was added to a test tube followed by 2
cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl).
2. The resulting gas was tested using lime water [Ca(OH)2] and a delivery
tube.
