Lesson Outline - Environmental Challenges

Background Information:
 Skill focused: Discussion Skills
 Students information: 25 first-year undergraduates who are mostly at the ‘Good’ and
‘Improvement Needed’ levels, and only 1 or 2 are very good.
 Word assigned: in a group of 3 students, one ‘very good’ student leads the discussion,
one ‘good’ student recaps at the end, and one ‘improvement needed’ student challenges
when necessary.
Demo Lesson:
 Teaching goals: this formative discussion assessment lasts for 3 lessons. Lesson 1 tends
to move 10 to 12 students from ‘Improvement Needed’ to ‘Good’. The detailed goals are:
 Introducing “Why Develop Discussion Skills?”
 Expanding “What Makes an Effective Discussion?” (Discussion Skills Glossary
attached) through the present unit ‘Environmental Challenges’
 Reflecting Today’s Lesson
 Teaching materials:
 Survey (delivered with handouts): to specify students’ learning needs before starting
the discussion.
 5 Discussion questions of ‘Environmental Challenges:
 (1) What environmental challenges do you know?
 (2) Climate change is considered the most severe environmental challenge, why
do you think it is?
 (3) What are the causes of climate change?
 (4) What do you feel about climate change?
 (5) As a university student, what can you do to slow down climate change?
 Discussion strategies (delivered with handouts):
 (1) Taking part: Prepare, Observe, Listen, & Participate.
 (2) Giving opinions (with practice - peer/teacher feedback): Giving your
opinion, Explaining your reasons. & Asking for other participants’ opinions.
 (3) Agreeing & disagreeing (with practice - peer/teacher feedback): Agreeing,
Acknowledging someone’s idea, & Disagreeing.
 (4) Clarifying (with practice - peer/teacher feedback): Asking questions, Asking
for clarification, Checking understanding, & Responding.
 (5) Other: Giving suggestions & Expressing certainty/uncertainty.
 Discussion reflection (delivered with handout):
 (1) What are the discussion courtesy you’ve learned today?
 (2) What discussion strategies have you realized today?
 (3) What environmental challenge would you wish to know more?
 (4) What is the biggest issue you have when you make a discussion with others
(Afraid to make mistakes? English accent? Just do not know what to say?)
 Teaching procedure: ice breaking - video watching to see an example - survey - 5
discussion questions (led by a student,supported by the teacher) with discussion skills
teaching & learning - reflection - homework
