Assignment Batch B

The document presents a series of mathematical problems related to filling and emptying tanks using pipes and pumps. It includes scenarios where pipes are opened alternately, calculations involving leaks, and the effects of simultaneous filling and draining. Each problem requires determining the time taken to fill or empty a tank under specific conditions.

Assignment (Pipes and Cistern)

1. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 20 hours and 25 hours respectively. If they are opened
alternately for 1 hour each, starting with pipe A, in how many hours (to the nearest integer)
will the tank be filled?

2. Pipe X can fill a tank in 24 hours and pipe Y can fill it in 32 hours. If both pipes are opened
alternately for 1 hour each starting with pipe X, how long will it take to fill the tank
completely?

3. A pump can fill tank with water within 2 hours. Because of a leak in tank, it takes 7/3
hours to fill the tank. the tank leak can empty the tank in _________ hours.

4. A water tank has two pipes; the empty tank filled in 12 minutes by the first and the full
tank is emptied by the second in 20 minutes. Calculate the time required to fill half tank
when both the pipes are opened.

5. One pipe can fill an empty cistern in 4 hours while another can drain the cistern when full
in 10 hours. Both the pipes were turned on when the cistern was half empty. How long will it
take for the cistern to be full?
