1. Have you ever borrowed books from others?

a) Yes many times. Actually I prefer to get from libraries. They are more reliable
and have a lot of books.
b) Not actually. I am a bit lazy person so I don’t like reading. I just buy if I really
need.

a) Of course I have. It is not an enjoyable situation but if have no other choices I

just do it.
b) No never. Even I am really in need I keep my patience and never ask anything
from anyone.

a) Habitually, I like it. It is a type of help and I can lift someone’s problem. That’s

b) Not much. Something in my ears whisper not to give. Maybe I am worried

a) Nothing in particular. Because there is a saying “Lend a thing and forget”. I

just don’t care about the return.

back from friends?

a) It depends. It is dependent on one’s character. Some never feel shy or

embarrassed, some are very timid and don’t ask their things back.
b) Of course they do. They think that it may hurt the borrower. That’s why they
may feel quite embarrassed.

1. Do you like the city you are living now?

a) Very much. I enjoy living in there. It is not too big nor small. Quiet and calm. I
don’t like crowded cities.
b) Not much. It is something really boring. We have little entertainment there. I
want to move to somewhere more vibrant.

2. Which city you have been to recently?

a) Well… I visited Toshkent a month ago. It is rather a hectic city. Anyway I

enjoyed very much. I went all new entertaining places.
b) Unfortunately, I couldn’t visit any city for ages. But I want to go to Dubai next
year. It is very modern and outstanding city.

a) Well… I feel more comfortable in the countryside than the city. It has
freshness and simplicity. I love these qualities.
b) Of course city. I like skyscrapers, a lot of cars, crowded people. I enjoy noise
and I have great opportunities when I am in the city.

4. What kinds of cities do you like?

a) I would like to be in coastal cities. They have lovely nature and beaches. Or
mountainous cities. Generally I like nature not large and modern cities.
b) Actually, I am a fond of tall buildings. They are amazing. Modern cities have
modern and easy life. That’s why I prefer large and modern cities.

5. Which city do you want to go?

a) Nowadays, I want to go to Istanbul. It has not only great history but also lovely
nature. Moreover, it is a quite cheap city for tourism.
b) Well… I would love to visit Saint Petersburg. The historical capital of Russian
Empire. I am interested in its historical buildings. They are kind of great.

1. Do you like to dance?

a) Yes of course! I mostly dance at wedding parties and on holidays. When I am

dancing I can forget my problems.
b) Not really. I am a quite shy person. That’s why I never dance among people. But
when I’m alone I may sing and dance.

2. Have you ever learned to dance?

a) I learned to dance imitating to people. I guess it was not a formal dancing style.
b) No, even I have never thought about that. It is not my cup of tea.

3. When was the last time you danced?

a) Oh, let me think. I remember it was a week ago. We had a party with my friends
so I danced there with my pleasure.

dancing.

4. What kind of dancing do people in your country like?

a) Well… we have a national dance style. Our people like dancing on wedding days.
Mostly, they dance how they prefer, not with any style.
b) In my mind, it is different in every region. Northern part of our republic likes
energetic dances while southern part prefers calm dances.

5. Why do you think some people like dancing?

a) In my mind, they feel happier when they dance. They can forget their problems.
b) Actually I have no idea about that. Maybe it makes them happy or relaxed.

a) Without any shadow of a doubt! It helps to grow healthy. It can form beautiful

b) I don’t think so. It is a waste of time. If you want a beautiful shape you should go
to the gym. If you want to relax you can do something more useful.

Hometown

1. Please describe your hometown a little.

a) Oh, I live in a nice and sacred city Bukhara. My town has a great role in
Uzbekistan. It is the centre of knowledge and home of scholars.
b) Well… I live in a quite underdeveloped city Bukhara. It has not many
skyscrapers and entertainment yet. In addition it is situated in the desert. I am
planning to move.

2. How long have you been living there?

a) Of course since my birth. It is my hometown. So if we count the years it is __

b) Not so long, we have moved there a year ago. Because my parents changed
their jobs. Before, we had lived in the town called ________.

a) Well… I love peace there. It is kind of relaxed city not hectic. You don’t rush. I
feel myself quiet and calm there.
b) So… I love its size. It is not too large and awkward. It is very easy to get to any
part of the city. Also I love our Old Part of the city. Really wonderful place at night.

4. Would you like to live there in the future?

a) I say of course. I would love. It is my homeland. It is the homeland of my

ancestors. It is very great city.
b) Let me think… I guess no. I am feeling squeezed there. I like big and modern
cities with tall skyscrapers. In this city there is not any. That’s why maybe I move in

1. Have you ever been to any island?

a) Not yet. I saw islands on screens. They are cool places. You can enjoy relaxing
there.
b) No I haven’t. But I’ve seen their pictures. Islands have amazing nature. I love it.

2. Are there any islands in your country?

a) Unfortunately no. We have no oceans in our country. It is pity that we have to

go to another country for relaxing in a beach.
b) No, because we live in the centre of the mainland. There are deserts, rivers,
mountains but no seas and islands.

3. Do you want to live on an island if you have a chance?

9 a) Definitely yes. I would have fresh air to breathe. I could go to the beach every
day. There are lots of fun on an island.
b) I don’t think so. Because it may be boring after some time. First you enjoy and
then get bored. I wouldn’t say no if it was a 2 or 3-week-getaway.

4. What do you like to do when you are on an island?

a) Without any shadow of a doubt, I would go swimming. Maybe I may also try
scuba-diving.
b) Of course beach games, local fruits and food. If I get bored of them, I can walk

1. Do you often wear make-up?

a) Not of course, I am a man and men don’t wear make-up. It is bad to imitate to
opposite gender. Very dreadful.
b) Yes almost every day. It gives me more confidence and nice appearance.
Women should wear make-up even though they are naturally beautiful. It makes
them more attractive.
c) Yes but rarely. Actually, I have no enough time. I will do it every day after some
time but not nowadays.

2. What does wearing make-up mean to you?

a) Well… it is a way to beauty. I guess it makes women nicer and more beautiful.
That’s why they always try to do it.
b) Let me think. It helps women to be attractive. Maybe they want to look
younger and radiant. I have no any particular opinion.

a) Actually, I haven’t done this before. And I don’t want to do it too. Because I
may not find a good one. I better give another kind of present.
b) I can say no. They are unusual gifts. Receiver may be surprised. But I surely
want to surprise them. So I may try it in the future.

4. What do you think when you see a man wearing make-up?

a) I have never thought about that. Because I have never met someone like this.

1. Do you have a patience?

a) I am convinced that, I have large patience. I can tolerate, I can wait for
something for a long time.
b) Not at all! It is hard to me to wait for something. I am very impatient. It is my
biggest problem.

2. Do most people in your country have patience?

a) I can say yes. Because our people are very sincere and kind. They can tolerate
for difficulties.
b) I haven’t noticed that. Because I have never paid attention. Maybe they are
not, maybe they are. Actually, I have no idea about that.

1. Do you like perfume?

a) Who doesn’t? Of course I love it. Especially, with weak sea aroma. I dislike
strong scents.
b) I like it only on cool days. On hot days it is difficult to breathe even if it is

a) By all means! I can’t imagine my day without it. It makes me more confident. I
don’t want people avoiding me.
b) Yep! It is something kind of attracting. It impresses people around you. They

a) Actually, not much. I use my brother’s. He buys for both of us.

mom. She loved it even it was not so good.

a) I would love. I want to surprise the receiver finding their taste. I choose

1. What’s your favourite animal?

a) It’s a very easy question. I say it is a cat. I love cats. They are quite smart and
lovely.
b) Oh, let me think. I guess I fancy dogs. They are the real friend of man. I like to
play with them.
c) Actually, I have no favourite animal but I like watching aquarium fish.

2. Do you like to see animals in the zoo?

a) Very much. Mostly, I enjoy watching monkeys. They are really funny animals.
b) No, no. It is very boring for me. I would rather watch scientific TV programs.

14 a) Yes I do. I have a dog/cat. Its name is Rex/Rikki. S/he is a white cat with black
spots. After a long day I like to play with him/her.

a) As a child I had a big dog. It looked scary but was very playful. I liked to feed

1. Do you like taking photographs?

a) Why not? I enjoy doing that. I love to take photos of nature/people. It is not
my hobby but I’m always taking photos.
b) Not really. I don’t know why but it is not my cup of tea. I can’t see suitable
thing to take a photo. Pity.

a) Of course every day. Selfies are my life. I can’t stand without them. I badly love
to take my photos.

a) Actually, I like to do it myself. It gives me joy. I can do what I want. It is more

comfortable for me.
b) Well… I would not do it myself. If people take photos I am not responsible for if
it is not quality.

6. How do you keep photos?

a) Usually, I keep them in my laptop. It is easy to find and watch. You can save a
lot of pictures in its memory. Modern technologies are cool.
b) Habitually, I like to keep them in printed version. It is more reliable. If I keep
them in my computer they may be deleted.

7. Are there any photos on the wall of your house?

17 a) Yes there are. There are some pictures of nature and one big family portrait.
We change some pictures from time to time if they get boring.
b) Not at all. They don’t suit for room decoration. We have some family pictures
in living room windowsill not any wall.

a) Usually I do. I frame only some photos especially family photos.

b) Not really. I think I have no framed photos. I don’t know why maybe I am not
interested in photos.

photos that you took yourself?

a) I should say I choose postcards. Because they are professional. I rarely take
professional photos. That’s why I prefer ready postcards.
b) Honestly, I send neither postcards nor photos. If any holiday or birthday I just
congratulate with my own words.
c) Habitually, I tend to send photos that I take. They can express my thoughts.
They have an inner message in them.

1. Where did you play when you were a child?

a) In the street! We used to play a lot of outdoor games. My friends were as

much boisterous as me. I miss those times a lot.
b) I was a shy and timid boy. I loved to play indoors. I couldn’t make friends
easily.
c) As a little girl, I loved my dolls. We played dolls together with my friend.
Sometimes we played in the courtyard sometimes in the house.

2. Did you play at your friends’ home?

a) Yes I did. One day we played in my house, one day in my friend’s, another day
in the street or yard.
b) Actually, no. I played with my friends in the school or stadium not at home. We
didn’t want to break something.

young.

a) As a child I was very naughty and energetic. I always played physical games.
Outdoors was the right choice of mine.
b) I was very shy and calm child, so I mostly stayed at home with my toys.
Sometimes I walked in the garden.

4. Do you think it’s important for children to play outside?

a) I am sure about that. It helps to grow healthy and happy. Children can improve
social skills too. Their body and mind always refresh when they play.
b) I don’t think so. It can be dangerous for them. They better walk in the street
and read books instead. Nowadays sport sections provide us with the right physical
exercises.

1. Do you like to watch sports on TV?

a) I say very much. Especially football. I never miss any match of my favourite

b) Not really. I watch sometimes if it is boxing or UFC. I don’t watch even TV very

a) Not as a professional but we go to stadium to play football every week with

my friends. And sometimes I go to the gym for weight lifting.

a) Interesting question but I have never thought about that. I like swimming so I
may try scuba-diving. Or as an optimist person I like dangerous sports too. Actually I
haven’t decided yet.

very much. It is great because you feel great pleasure if you do it.

6. Do young people in your country like to do exercise?

a) They love. Young teenage boys want to have big muscles so they go to the
gyms. Girls also want to be slim and beautiful and attend fitness clubs at least they
go jogging in the morning.
b) As a lazy person I don’t do any sports so I consider everyone as me. Don’t know
maybe they go or they don’t.

7. Do you think people are keen on doing physical activity?

21 a) Not all of them. Because not everyone is so energetic and avid. Some people
enjoy doing physical activities some not. People are more tend not to do any hard
job.
b) It depends. Mostly people do sports or physical activity when they have no
choice. If they want to be nice looking so they try. If their work is hard so they must.

Street Markets

1. Do you like going to street markets?

a) Well… yes it is quite cheap and funny. There are a lot of people outside
shouting at each other and explaining something. It amuses me.
b) No way. It is the place which drives me crazy. It is dirty. Maybe products are
unhealthy too.

2. Are there many street markets in your country?

a) Yes there are some nice street markets. They are always crowded and full of
fresh products.
b) There are quite a lot. They mostly sell groceries. Even clothes and other
household stuffs are sold in some street markets too.

3. What do people usually buy at street markets?

22 a) I know that everyone buys groceries at those markets. For example meat, milk,
fruits, vegetables and so on.
b) I guess they buy farm products. Groceries are much cheaper than
supermarkets there. That’s why people do so.

4. What is the difference between street markets and

supermarkets?

a) The first big difference is cost. Next one is place. Street markets are not
monopoly or brand there isn’t one owner. But supermarkets belong to someone and
costs are high.
b) I know two differences: supermarkets have great service and quality. However,
street markets have no those things.

Transportation

1. What’s the most popular means of transportation in your

hometown?

a) It is bus of course. Very cheap and always available. But yes there are some
problems about time management.
b) Maybe it is private cars. Because there are always a lot of cars on the roads in
rush hours.

2. How often do you take buses?

a) I say every day! It is the very thing that takes me my destination. And very
affordable.
b) Not much. I should say rarely. I don’t like crowds so I mostly take taxis. Yes
they are a bit pricey but comfortable.

a) Yep it is easy. Airplane is pricey and luxury but a bit dangerous. Train is slower
but reliable.
b) I guess the main difference is speed. Because in trains there is high comfort
too, if you can afford.

4. Is driving to work popular in your country?

a) Yeah it is. Our people quite enjoy driving to work. But this trend is somehow
bad I think. There is heavy jams on roads.
b) Very, very, much! Almost every family has their own cars. Sometimes it is hard
to wait in traffic jams though.

5. Do you think people will drive more in the future?

a) Yes I guess so. Because car industries never stop producing and people never
stop buying. They develop new types and technologies day by day.
b) I tend to say no. New era creates new trends. I hope inventors are creating
something new to relief tension of cars.

6. Would you ride bikes to work in the future?

a) Maybe. It depends. If it is easy and comfortable for me I certainly do. I f not

just won’t do.
b) Yeah I would love. It is healthy and useful. I save a lot of money too. And I also

1. Do you like travelling?

a) Oh, I love it. It is something I always try to do. It is great to get to see every
corner of the world. I really enjoy travelling.
b) I should say not much. It is better to me to stay at home and read world
through my books. I prefer not to leave my hometown and home.

a) Actually, I have never travelled yet. Because I didn’t have to do. Moreover, it is
a bit pricey I guess.
b) Quite a lot. Even in short distances I try to do by airplane. It is not only
amazing but also time-saving. However its price hurts sometimes.

3. How long was the longest trip you took?

26 a) I remember it was 2 years ago. I took a bus to Toshkent. It was winter and
distance was nearly 500 kilometres. In addition, road was frozen it took us more
than 12 hours.
b) Well… it was 6 months ago. We wanted to have a family picnic to mountains.
We left house early in the morning but arrived late at night, nearly 16 hours we
spent on road.

4. Which country would you like to travel in the future?

a) It is enjoyable planning about future so I always dreamt to go to ________. I

love its cities/nature. I always search about that country on the internet.
b) You can call me a fan of heat/cold. Because I want to go to the cold/hot

1. What is your favorite festival?

a) As I am a patriotic person I love national festival Navruz. It is a spring holiday.

Every year we celebrate it with a lot of preparation and happiness.
b) I must say New Year. It brings me a plenty of joy and happiness. At New Year
Eve all of our relatives gather around one delicious table. We talk with each other
and welcome New Year together.

2. How do you celebrate the festival?

a) Habitually, we have a party with our family. Actually, it depends, it depends on

the holiday. If it is a national festival we visit our relatives or go to the central park. If
it is an international festival we may watch its concert on TV.
b) It depends on the type of the holiday. Anyway I enjoy every holiday. Even we
have a party even not they are something very nice.

1. Do you like hot weather?

a) Oh, I love it. It is the great opportunity for swimming. And people are more
smiling than cold, cloudy days.
b) Frankly, I dislike it. There are mosquitoes everywhere when it is hot. It is hard
to breathe. You should stay at home otherwise you get tanned and dark. I don’t like
hot weather.

2. What kind of weather is typical in your hometown?

a) We have four seasons all year long. We have no particular weather all the
time. In summer burning, in winter freezing. But I love it.
b) Actually, there isn’t always one weather in my country. Every season has its
own temperature. I like spring and autumn. Because they have lovely cool weather.

a) I love summer. Summer is great. Lots of fruits and lots of fun. When it is I
summer I visit my grandparents. They live in the lovely village.
b) I prefer winter. It is as fresh as snow. You can enjoy playing snowball and all

c) Well… I am an optimist person so I like all seasons. There aren’t any
disadvantages of weather for me. In winter I enjoy playing snow, in spring watching
